Errors may happen in Guild Wars, just like any other software. The reason is often unclear, as it can be client-side, server-side, or anywhere in the vast internet between the two. The following list may help a frustrated user to pin down the issue and resolve it.

Known Errors[ | ]

Non-critical Errors[ | ]

These are in-game errors that will not cause the game to crash back to Windows desktop, but kick you back to the login screen or the character selection screen.

Guild Wars will display an error description that ends with "(Code=###)" (previously "Err=###" or "NetErr=###") with ### being a 3-digit error code:

Code NCsoft
Support
Description What to do?
005 2438 "Guild Wars was unable to connect to the game server due to a network error. This may be caused by internet routing issues or a server network failure." These codes indicate a connection error. Somewhere between your PC and the server the connection was interrupted, or never established in the first place. This may be a problem on your system (firewall, router, modem, etc.), a problem with your ISP or a connection problem at the server. (Note: If it's the latter it is usually followed by one of the server side errors listed below when trying to reconnect.)
You may want to do a traceroute to the server in order to determine the chokepoint.

Despite the error message text, code 058's can also come from a problem with your client, not the internet connection. This problem can be solved by deleting the gw.dat file, which forces the client to re-download all the game data. Also, you can re-install the game.

007 2440 "Your connection to the server was lost. Please check your internet connection."
026 2441 (DNS name lookup failed)
027 - (Network error. Please check you connection to the internet and try again.)
058 3104 "Guild Wars was unable to connect to any login servers. This is very likely caused by an Internet routing issue."
004 - "Guild Wars was unable to complete the operation. Please try again in a few minutes" These codes indicate a server error. The server may be inaccessible due to an update, bug, large download or network issues. There is little you can do except to wait. You may want to check the network status.
010 2439
013 3058
040 3059
072 -
015 - "Guild Wars was unable to find the mission you requested. Please try again in a few minutes" These codes indicate an internal server error. Most likely data on the server are out of synch due to a bug or corrupted data. There is little you can do except to wait for a fix by ArenaNet.
019 -
029 -
021 - (No account found with that email address.) These codes indicate a problem with your account. Be alarmed! If you installed any 3rd party programs, your account password has most likely been stolen by a trojan or keylogger. Warning: Many of these keyloggers are not recognized in a virus scan. Wipe your PC clean, and, if you can still access your account, change your e-mail address (remove the keylogger first!).
035 - "You have been disconnected from Guild Wars because another client has connected using your account. Please try again later."
043 - "You have already created the maximum number of characters for this account. Please delete one of your existing character [sic] if you wish to create a new one." -
045 - "Your account has been suspended from Guild Wars for offensive behavior, which is a breach of the User Agreement and Rules of Conduct. You will be able to join the game in approximately X hours."
OR:
"Your account has been banned from Guild Wars for a breach of the User Agreement and/or Rules of Conduct. This ban is permanent."
Code 045 indicates an account mark or a ban. You may want to read the User Agreement and the Rules of Conduct.
050 4345 "Guild Wars was unable to complete the operation. Please try again in a few minutes." see 005
059 - If the account has been logged in for more than 24 hours it will be disconnected. Also, if the account is logged in and is inactive for more than 10 hours with no game play occurring, it will be disconnected. This is an important one to keep in mind for anyone that is idling in the Shing Jea Boardwalk or attempting to death level in order to obtain the Legendary Defender of Ascalon title. One way around it is to end the Guild Wars process (not application!), Gw.exe using Windows Task Manager, restart Guild Wars, and reconnect to where you were previously playing. This will reset the time limit.
070 - (Cannot change account name/email. You have already changed this recently.) -
102 2657 (Incorrect access key) These codes indicate a problem with the access key you were trying to enter. The best way to resolve this is to contact NCsoft support. But read their FAQs and the game manual first!
103 2658 (cd key in use)
105 - (Your account already has access to the rights this key provides.)
113 - (Incorrect access key)
119 - "Your account has already registered this key. Please keep the key in safe place; you can use it later to retrieve your password or to obtain support."
122 3358 (Access key disabled)
011 - "The Password you have provided is incorrect. Please check your password and try again." You have most likely mis-typed your password, try entering it again, slowly, paying close attention to the keys you are typing and check if you have caps lock on.
165 - "You do not have the Guild Wars campaign necessary to select that character." After a preview weekend of an unreleased campaign, you selected the test character. You will need the new chapter before playing this character again.
034 - "Your transaction is still in progress. Please wait a few moments and try again." This usually means that you have started something, such as logging onto a character, then cancelled that action and re-started. Just wait for a few minutes and you can continue.
173 - "Transaction failed. Timeout when trying to connect to the shop server." -
031 - "The character name X contains words or partial words that are not permitted in Guild Wars." -
167 - "Guild Wars is currently down for maintenance. We apologize for any inconveniences this maintenance may cause, and hope to have Guild Wars running again in short order." -
181 - "The Guild Wars Official Store is currently down for maintenance. We apologize for any inconveniences this maintenance may cause and hope to have the Guild Wars Official Store running again in short order." -

Critical Errors[ | ]

These errors cause the game to crash back to Windows desktop, or to refuse starting in the first place:

  • Critical error
  • Repairing data archive
  • Error: Disk Full - This error can also be triggered by trying to take a screenshot when low on disk space as the game won't abort that action, so be conscious about free space on your hardrive before you set out to take numerous screenshots.
  • Graphics Driver Failure - This error is often triggered by older computers or out of date graphics cards or graphics card drivers. The recommended graphics memory to play Guild Wars is 128mbs.
  • ... more to be added
