Can't log in[edit source]

I can't log in. When I enter my username, GW-Susan, and tab to password (or click into that field, or whatever), my name is converted to lowercase, gw-susan, and then I am not recognized.

What internet browser are you using? Felix Omni Signature.png 19:03, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
FireFox, the same one I have always used. But, good point, will try the dreaded IE8.
Tried IE8, still can't get in. After asking for new password (and getting one), it tells me there is no such account (either up or lower case), which is definitely wrong as I have been contributing for over 3 years now.
I can see your contributions and that there's is no block on the user name; so the worst hasn't happened. If you can, try logging in from a different computer (any browser).   — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 23:29, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Character Switching[edit source]

Is there any way to move a character from one Guild Wars account to another one? I know you can pay to have character's names changed, features changed, etc. - but if you have more than one Guild Wars account can you move one player (intact with all belongings) to your other account? Thanks

Unfortunately not, there is no account wide transfer of character (probably because of the difficulty of unlock transfer, and name transfer, let alone guilds and campaigns etc). The game wasn't designed for characters to be switched over from account to account RandomTime 16:19, November 15, 2009 (UTC)

Directory Assistance[edit source]

I've recently decided to make the change of running Guild Wars off of the C:\ drive and switching over to an external hard drive. So far, I've got the full Guild Wars folder that's normally contained within the Program Files folder on the C:\ drive placed onto the F:\ drive(My external hard drive.) and I'm able to run Guild Wars off of it perfectly fine. My one issue is, however, that when I want to change my build by loading a previously saved template from the Template folder, the Guild Wars game client searches within a directory that currently doesn't exist. It continues to search for the builds saved and save new builds onto the C:\ drive in a Guild Wars folder that doesn't exist. The Template folder and all the previously saved builds are located on my F:\ drive, within the Guild Wars folder that's normally on the C:\ drive, and within the Templates folder that's normally contained within that. I cannot find a way to get the client to search in the right drive, though. Any ideas other than copy-pasting my Templates folder onto the C:\ drive? I'd like Guild Wars to be fully mobile for me. - Genprey Locust's Fury.jpg 06:12, November 27, 2009 (UTC)

That's more than likely due to a setting in your Windows registry that still tells GW it's installed on the C: drive. All you should need to do to fix this is download the GW installer, run it, and point it to the GW folder on your F: drive. The only thing this will overwrite is your Gw.exe file and your registry settings - your templates, screenshots, and Gw.dat will all be retained - and afterwards, the registry will tell GW that it is now installed on F:. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 06:45, November 27, 2009 (UTC)
Tried that later that night, but it's still getting the same issue. It seems to be an issue with Vista itself because when I bring the external hard drive to another computer I have that runs Windows XP everything works fine. —Genprey Locust's Fury.jpg 18:05, November 29, 2009 (UTC)
Probably because of the way Vista protects the Program Files folder and all subfolders. A lot of software ran into that issue, and it seems that in Vista, Guild Wars tries to save and read this stuff from a "Guild Wars" subfolder in your Documents virtual directory. I believe there's a way through Vista to change the physical location the Documents folder refers to, though transferring it to an external drive may have undesirable effects. (And I don't recall how to do that at the moment anyway.) Unfortunately, that may be the only option to get the Guild Wars software itself to use your external drive for that. Another option would be to set up file synchronization of some sort if you really need them on the external drive. Nwash User-Nwash-Eyes.png 18:16, November 29, 2009 (UTC)
One more thought... maybe using one of the compatibility modes will trick Guild Wars into looking for the templates in the location you want? (This assumes that Guild Wars is checking the operating system version to decide where to look for and store these. Since it works on XP, the XP compatibility mode might just work.) Pointer issue[edit source]

I am currently having an issue viewing my pointer on the screen. It still is there, because I can click, and interact. I just cannot see it to know where I am clicking. I am running windows 7, on a high def montor. OF course it ran fine on my xp computer though. So I am curious whether its a setting of mine, because I have tried changing resolutions and mouse settings, but nothing has happened. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.114.178.200 (contribs) .

Have you tried running it in a compatibility mode, say, for Windows XP? Otherwise, I'm not sure... it does seem likely that it would be related to a setting, possibly a DirectX setting, but off the top of my head, I'm not certain what it would be. Nwash User-Nwash-Eyes.png 15:11, December 12, 2009 (UTC)
Windows has a variety of settings that hide/unhide cursors in certain situations. More likely, the company that wrote the software for the trackpad/mouse has a control panel that also affects cursor behavior. I've found that these settings are often hidden in unexpected places...so look at things that affect the display, compatibility, and performance, as well as mouse settings and the control panel for the specific mouse/trackpad you have. The 3rd party software settings can usually be reached by going to mouse settings:advanced settings:[company name] panel, but often the route is more circuitous. Good luck. And please let us know what you find out.   — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 18:37, December 12, 2009 (UTC)

mouse not working[edit source]

MY mouse doesn't show up on the screen but is still tangible in the game. I can click and the character responds. I just cannot see where it is. I have windows 7, recently updated from vista, and it didn't work on either. I have tried updating my directx driver, and changing my resolution and other screen settings but have come up with zero results. Please, inform me of why this is happeneing. (edit conflict) We tried giving you a couple possibilities above, but please note that we are not ArenaNet or NCSoft. This is an unofficial wiki; for official support, you will either have to use the support options on the official site or you could try to find an appropriate place to ask on the official wiki.

I have found that switching the theme of the computer for newer OS to a basic mode allows the mouse to work. Guild wars video driver is not quite compatible with all the available options allowed on Vista and W7.

Operating System[edit source]

We just bought a new tower with Windows 7 - 64 bit. Will Guild Wars play on this? Thanks

It should do, there haven't been any widespread problems with 64 bit Operating Stystems or Windows 7 with Guild Wars. RandomTime 22:39, December 21, 2009 (UTC)
Clarification: After personal testing, it works fine RandomTime 09:21, January 4, 2010 (UTC)
I've played Guild Wars on two different computers running 64-bit Windows 7 with the DVD drive as the only hardware component common to both computers (unless you count various chips embedded in other parts). One used Windows 7 Home Premium, and the other Windows 7 Professional. The game ran very well on both.
If Guild Wars had any compatibility problems with Windows 7, we'd probably have heard of them by now. The Steam Hardware Survey says that about 23% of people who use Steam run Windows 7, and the bulk of that is 64-bit. While hardly a perfect snapshot of what gamers use, let alone the general public, there are quite a lot of people playing games on Windows 7, and surely that includes Guild Wars. Mouse issue con't[edit source]

I tried running the computer in Windows XP service pack 2 compatibilty mode with 256 color resolution yet my mouse still flickered rarely across the screen. Any ideas as to a way to fix this? I reported it to Microsoft, but knowing Bill Gates, he won't have it fixed because it'd be spending his hard earned cash. So please, if you have found a solution please inform me. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.114.178.200 (contribs) .

256 color resolution certainly isn't necessary. What video card and mouse do you have if you don't mind me asking? Felix Omni Signature.png 07:43, January 4, 2010 (UTC)

I am using the laptop mouse, and running two 512MB nvidia hd graphics cards.I have also tried using a wireless mouse. MY computer mouse theme is the standard theme. I am running windows 7. I tried to run it in compatibility mode since it ran on XP. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.114.178.200 (contribs) .

First of all, please sign your comments by appending ~~~~ at the end, so that it is clear who said what.
Don't bother with compatibility mode. Guild Wars works just fine with Windows 7. And especially don't use the Windows XP virtualization that comes with Windows 7 Professional, as that will mess up 3D rendering.
It may help to say what card you're running. The amount of video memory doesn't say much, as, for example, either a Radeon HD 2400 Pro or Radeon HD 4870 could have 512 MB of memory, but the latter card is about 20 times as powerful as the former. You say that you're running "nvidia hd graphics", which is peculiar, as Nvidia doesn't put "HD" in their video card names, while ATI has for the last four generations--and now Intel has jumped on board with that naming scheme, too. If you don't know what you're running, you can type "dxdiag" in the Windows 7 search box, go to the Display tab, and it will tell you what you're running, or at least come pretty close to it.
Regardless of what card you're running, have you tried downloading the latest video card drivers? That can fix all sorts of strange problems.
Also, do you run the game windowed or maximized? Try the other and see if the mouse flickering occurs in both.
And you're running two video cards? Two Nvidia cards in SLI? Using a laptop mouse? Is this a gaming laptop with two discrete cards in SLI? SLI and CrossFire can do peculiar things, so you might try disabling a card and see if that helps. It doesn't take a very powerful computer to handle Guild Wars. The Radeon HD 4670 in this computer (which cost $45 new after rebate) is plenty powerful enough to max all graphical settings and get around 100 frames per second. Quizzical 07:44, January 5, 2010 (UTC)

It's dual. And I got it to work by not maximizing the window. And this is a new personal laptop I designed for gaming. They are GForece GT 130M cards. And it doesn't work on W7. It hasn't since I downloaded it. Until now, when I played in a non maximized screen66.114.178.200 04:04, January 6, 2010 (UTC)`JEWWWW04:04, January 6, 2010 (UTC)

Guild Wars works just fine with Windows 7. I'd suspect that you have a driver problem. Did you upgrade to Windows 7 from a previous version of Windows? And if so, did you replace the video card driver appropriately?
It's probably too late for you now, but it's typically better to have one more powerful card than two very weak video cards, unless you need to run a zillion monitors at once. Quizzical 04:55, January 6, 2010 (UTC)

Character Creation Date[edit source]

Is there some way to find out exactly the date that each character was created? I know that I can type '/age' and get how long my character has been playing and how long I've been on that day. But I'd like to know when I created each of my characters.

Thank you for your time.

[email protected]

If you /age it'll say "You have played this character for x hours and x minutes over the past x months." — Balistic 19:46, January 23, 2010 (UTC)
You'll just have to keep doing /age every day until the month counter ticks up, and that will give you the day portion of the character's creation date. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 20:06, January 23, 2010 (UTC)

Where is the builds page where I can view peoples pre-made builds/read about them, talk about a bad interface!

Builds can be found on PvX. I believe there used to be builds hosted here but they were phased out. I don't believe it's a bad interface, just that you happened to be on the wrong site for trying to find builds. Chibi Moon Shadow 03:05, February 14, 2010 (UTC)
Yes, we did host builds here originally, but the work required to administer that section was detracting from the rest of the wiki, so the builds section was branched out to be its won wiki, which came be known as PvX. There is a link to PvX Wiki on the Main Page, actually - right under where it says "Builds." —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 04:14, February 14, 2010 (UTC)
If you enter "builds" into the box, you get directed to the build wipe article, teh second paragraph of which reads "Many, but not all, of the the builds we wiped now reside on the PvX Builds Wiki", and it's linked, Should this be more prominent on that page? --◄mendel► 05:59, February 14, 2010 (UTC)

Best Special Event Item Farming Locations[edit source]

Special Event Items have a chance of dropping from any opponent (including animals). The Farming article lists many areas that can be farmed for Gold, Faction points or Reputation points which would provide a good opportunity for Special Event Items as well, but what areas would maximize the the rate of collection of these items for a Solo farmer, without considering gold or point farming? (I had neglected to put my ID in as well! 74.98.182.64 05:05, 30 April 2011 (UTC)

I would think that Minister Cho's Estate would be good due to the abundance of animals and afflicted. I will collect kills/hour and Special Event Item drops/hour data and post it here. 74.98.182.64 19:25, 19 December 2010 (UTC) (added id - way late!)

I can't remember on the top of my head if the kills per hour includes the afflicted animals in Minister Cho's Estate (although I'd think they would). For kills per hour, you'd ideally want a group of mobs next to an explorable, in a low level zone so you could go solo, or solo with monk hero/hench, so that you maximise your drops (IIRC, special event items are immune to loot scaling). Another suggestion would be going to Istan, which is heavily populated with low level mobs, with some large groups outside outposts, most of Istan's zones are open, meaning that you could probably run around and gain aggro before destroying large groups with AoE or PBAoE damage. Try Zehlon_Reach or the Plains of Jarin
As for how to do it I'd suggest a character with a high DPS. A nuker ele, or one with high PBAoE would be good, a Dervish might work, due to their high PBAoE. If you're doing more than one mob, it's likely that a Minion Master Necro would be effective, although you might want to sacrifice one of the party slots for a damage dealer to start your minion farm. (This is a more detailed response that you'll get from support - I think it's a local issue, so hopefully we can solve it here, without you going there.) It could still be major packet loss due to you being too far away from your router, how far away are you? If you're not too far away, could you run GuildWars with the -diag flag. (That's normally C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe -diag in your run box, but might be different depending on where you installed it, 64 bit versions of windows will need C:\Program Files (x86)\Guild Wars\Gw.exe -diag) - in particular, have a look at the network paths result. In the log you get after the diagnostics at the "Checking server connectivity" - they should all say connect succeeded. If any don't, note them down. Have a look in the next session "Tracing network paths" - and see if you find one that doesn't work, you're looking for one that stops on the first stop (looking for a local IP, normally starting with 192. or 10). If it stops at a local IP, you know it's a local problem. If you can get me some of this info (which IP it stops at, and where the connection doesn't succeed), then I'll try to help you more. Hi!
To use builds you must have all of the skills unlocked. When in PvE you must buy the skill or get it as a reward. If you prefer, you can gain one (elite or non-elite) from a dead boss of the right profession, using a special skill. To get one from a boss you must at the time be the right profession (primary or secondary - doesn't matter - just be partly the right one) and have the Signet in your skillbar when fighting the boss.
If you wish to learn more about builds - and see a lot of them - please go here. By all means ask skill or build related questions here if you prefer. One thing I'd say is the editors here at GuildWiki may be less elitist, and so better at answering questions for you.
Cheers! A F K sig 2.jpg A F K When Needed 15:06, May 8, 2010 (UTC)
I laughed when I read the pvx is elitist line. Pvx isn't elitist, they all suck and try to troll everyone else. —MaySig.png Warw/Wick 22:03, May 8, 2010 (UTC)
Along with required skills, you'll need a weapon and armor set with particular characteristics. Make sure you have all your equipment. Bottle 21:59, May 10, 2010 (UTC)
Warwick, perhaps they're bad elitists, but I still think the (common) description of them is a reasonable one.

How do i install Eye Of The North to a new computer if i have lost the code?

If you still have your login info (email address that you used, password, and at least one character name), once you successfully login, the remaining content (for which you have already paid) should download onto your computer. The only thing you'll need to install is the base GW client, which you can download from here or re-install from any of your game discs. Your account information (including all your activated product keys) is stored on ArenaNet's servers, so all you have to remember is your account credentials (email/password/character, as mentioned above) and you can log in from anywhere. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 21:52, July 1, 2010 (UTC)

Automated Inventory[edit source]

Any hints on parsing the data stream so that character inventory items and equipped items (as well as hero equipped items) and account Xunlai chest items can be scraped to a text file. I had been keeping it up manually for major items, but that is a pain. It is sometimes difficult to recall just which character/character hero has the nifty-uber item that you need right now! The preceding unsigned comment was added by Separ (contribs) 03:33, July 7, 2010.

You'd want to be very careful with anything of this nature, especially with ArenaNet's heightened state of alertness over anything that sniffs of tampering with their client/server data packets, while what you describe above implies a desire to "read-only", I'd be inclined to suggest if you really feel the need to catalogue each character's inventory, play it safe and stick with manually recording via text file or pencil/paper. Strange Frames Per Second screen overlay in GW[edit source]

A few times I have accidentally pressed a combination of keys and end up with a frame rate screen coming up on top of my GW screen. It is not a separate window, but a transparent overlay where the you see like a heart beat monitor running as it counts the fps. The only way I can get rid of it is to close down GW and restart the game.

Does anyone know what the magical keystroke combination is to get rid of this overlay? I have searched through all the graphis options but I can't find anything and no one in game seems to understand what I'm talking about (hope someone here will understand what I'm trying to say). I will try and get a print screen next time it happens. Thanks ~~

Good day, to you, and welcome. I personally have no clue, and I think you are better of going to the "Official" wiki for this kind of problem. Also, did you consider, it could be specific to your computer, and not a Guild Wars feature? The preceding unsigned comment was added by Arnout aka The Emperors Angel (talk • contribs), who really meant to add ~~~~ before posting at 08:45, 15 September 2010 (UTC).
Perf monitor.JPG
Does it look like the one here? If so, I hope you find the keystroke combo b/c I'd love to toggle it. This one is turned on by using a command line option, "-perf", which (as the name indicates) displays performance data (including FPS) as an overlay (instead of requiring a mouse-over). I don't see any options that allow you to turn it on/off in-game nor even move it around (as you can w/most of the rest of the interface). → That would mean you've found an undocumented feature!
If it doesn't look like this one, then my next guess is that your gfx card includes an option to overlay gfx performance data and you should look in your Windows control panel. Regardless, please keep us posted with your findings. Good luck.  —Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 15:54, September 15, 2010 (UTC)
I think I know what you mean. It covers the entire screen with a number of graphs, right? I popped that in an Alliance Battle once... Try Shift+F10. (@TEF: Hotkeys has this info) --Vipermagi 16:16, September 15, 2010 (UTC)
Yes that's the graph thingie. Shift+F10 toggles it on an off. Phew.. thanks. I know my fingers were no where near the F10 when I've turned this on, so there is probably another key combo that will toggle it too. Khukri
Ah, thanks VM. (It's not adjustable in the option:control panel, as most everything else is.)  —Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 18:02, September 15, 2010 (UTC)

GWx2[edit source]

I found a programme (GWx2) that allows me to run two guildwars clients at the same time on the same pc. I have 2 legit accounts, but I was wondering is this illegal? Many thanks in advance, - Malis

It is not illegal. It was used by Gaile Gray to run her sessions with the frog. It is, however, unsupported. If you get ripped off, lose your account, or in any other way get screwed, the guild wars helpdesk will NOT help you. But you won't because half the people here on the site use it, and I've never seen any1 have trouble with it. Arnout aka The Emperors Angel 09:45, September 28, 2010 (UTC)
tyvm ;)
I use a different program, GWMultiLaunch, but basically the same deal: Anet has no official position on 3rd-party programs other than they won't help if said programs screw you over. Unless it's a bot program, then you get reaped. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 13:28, September 28, 2010 (UTC)
Ah, Arnout, Gaile gets upset when people allege that she used GWx2. She says that she always used two different computers. I'm not really sure where that rumor got started, but I believe I've propagated it in the past. Sorry about that. Felix Omni Signature.png 14:06, September 28, 2010 (UTC)
I believe I read on her page somewhere, that she confirmed that she used GwX2. It was a while back, when Rose was poking into dark corners of GW Law, and was asking whether GwX2 was allowed or not. Arnout aka The Emperors Angel 14:29, September 28, 2010 (UTC)
Cant seem to find it however. Awell, who cares. You can safely use it. Arnout aka The Emperors Angel 14:33, September 28, 2010 (UTC)

(Reset indent) I don't think I would say "absolutely safe" or "risk free." I would say that it's more likely that you will win the lottery and get hit by lightning than suffering an issue for running a clean-copy of GWx2. Here are the facts, as I understand them:

Bad News
  • No official okay: ANet has never (and will never) officially give the okay to any 3rd party tool, regardless of its utility, safety, etc.
  • Technically violates EULA: ANet has specifically said that the TOS/EULA gives them the right to ban anyone who uses a program that alters GW code; technically, most multi-launchers (including GWx2) tweak GW.exe (as it runs) to allow two copies to run together.
Good News
  • Never banned anyone for GWx2: ANet has never banned someone for use of any clean copy of TexMod or GWx2 (or any multi-launcher).
    • To ensure you have a clean-copy, make sure you compare the checksum of the file you downloaded with the checksum published by the author (or supporters).
  • Playing the game is ok: Gaile Gray has gone on record as saying that their anti-cheating team has no interest in going after people who are intent on playing the game without giving themselves an undue advantage. She has suggested that things like keyboard binding programs and such are ok so long as they don't allow you to manipulate a match or walk away from the keyboard and keep playing.
Other alternatives

There are 3 ways of playing two accounts simultaneously: two do not violate the EULA at all; the other two only violate it technically (though not in spirit, as suggested above):

  • use two computers — not even close to a technical violation (plus: ANet staff admit to doing this)
  • use a virtual machine (through Windows or various other apps) — this is 99.9% like running two machines, but off the same physical computer (ANet staff haven't admitted to doing this, but they have implied it)
  • use a multi-launcher (technically, a violation by use of a third party tool; however, no one has ever suffered for using one):
    • GWx2 (oldest, reliable, but only runs two versions; difficult to use w/texmod; must close both/restart if issue with either)
    • Guild Wars Multi-Launch (newest, runs as many copies as you like; easy to use w/tex-mod; can close any/relaunch w/o closing others; open source)
    • Maddy's GW Launcher (also runs many copies, closed source; requires connection to Maddy's server after a GW update)

—Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 15:50, September 28, 2010 (UTC)

GWx2 modifies Gw.exe, GWML does not (I don't know about Maddy's, but I think it works like GWx2). GWML instead modifies the GW registry entries to point to each separate install path that you launch, then clears the mutex that GW sets, which normally prevents additional copies from running. So GWML does not violate the EULA because it does not modify GW code. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 16:34, September 28, 2010 (UTC)
"GWML ...modifies the GW registry entries..." & "clears the mutex that GW sets" — I think ANet would read that as modifying GW code (although perhaps it doesn't change gw.exe, it does change how gw.exe works). It's also a third party tool used to launch the application. Near as I can tell from Gaile's responses, that's theoretically enough to qualify for a breach. It's not up to us to decide whether something violates the EULA; that is entirely up to ANet.
However, regardless, I think it's indisputable that ANet has never banned someone for using a multi-launcher (or texmod); Gaile has said so in as many words. Given the widepsread use, I doubt very much if they will ever punish people for using tools to launch multiple copies of the game...at least not without warning us far in advance. But that is subtly and importantly different from saying that multi-launchers have an official ok.
The question is, what will you use it for? To exchange stuff between your main and your mule account is ok; to lose against yourself in PvP is not (but that wouldn't be ok no matter how you did it). (Is that even possible with current PvP rules?) --◄mendel► 15:17, September 29, 2010 (UTC)
Sure, using GuildWars in any way that is against the rules is... against the rules. If you are using two accounts to manipulate matches or otherwise violate the EULA, it hardly matters if you are running both from the same computer.
BTW: i don't recall the details, but one person was asking Gaile a month or so back whether it was okay to practice against his other account). (Obviously, she said, no way!).
Also BTW: Gaile has said that it is okay for a second account to leech off the farming of the first (slightly ups the value of cash dropped).  —Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 15:55, September 29, 2010 (UTC)
Can't a second account also be used to help deathäleveling in Pre? Maybe we should make a page for this. --◄mendel► 21:52, September 29, 2010 (UTC)
Death leveling using two accounts is only marginally helpful — you have to let both party members die in order to rez (the signet only works 1x each, not enough to DL). You can use two accounts to speed up charr hunting, by leaving one toon at the gate while the other goes to skin the furballs. When done, the gatekeeping account zones, heads for the lever, and you can switch back to the main one, ready to kill again.  —Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 22:27, September 29, 2010 (UTC)
No, you do death level Charr, but they get more experience by killing two for one revival downtime? There may have been a catch though. --◄mendel► 23:13, September 29, 2010 (UTC)
Sure, they get 2x the XP by killing two toons. But you get half the xp when you kill them together. If you only want to LDoA one account at a time, then, yes, you reduce the time spent DLing and let the secondary toon die before getting revenge on the charr. However, since many DL sessions take hours, the benefits might be Pyrrhic (you still have to afk for a long time and now you've tied up both your accounts). I know someone who used two accounts/two computers to LDoA, so I'll ask what he did (he's also a mini-maxer, so he'll have figured out the most efficient method).  —Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 00:47, September 30, 2010 (UTC)
So another use is to DL charrs on one account and play on the other. Neither account has an advantage from this, so that definitely ought to be ok with ANet. :) --◄mendel► 08:38, September 30, 2010 (UTC)

Death leveling: Different levels[edit source]

i noticed when i death level that some enemies are lvl 20 and others stay at lvl 8 or 9, i usually have 10 - 12 enemies at the res shrine at a time. is this normal?--98.86.11.155 17:16, October 2, 2010 (UTC)

IIRC only one creature gains the XP when you die, so it's possible that the game changes the creature that gains the XP, giving an unequal spread of levels. -- RandomTime 17:19, October 2, 2010 (UTC)
Additionally, the higher level creature is more likely to get the exp, as it is stronger than the rest. --Vipermagi 18:06, October 2, 2010 (UTC)
"Prune" the level 20 enemies so that they don't steal XP from the others. --◄mendel► 21:02, October 2, 2010 (UTC)
Mendel has the short version correct. Unless it's changed from what I encountered, the first group you aggro (might be last, but the other mechanics suggest itis the first) gets x% of the xp from killing you. The next group you aggro gets x% of that remainder, the third group gets x% of THAT remainder... If you pulled 5 groups, that means the final group may only get 5% or so of the xp from killing you. If you kill the leader (usually a monk or other caster) of the group at the front of that chain, the remaining members form a new group -- at the back of the xp chain, letting all the other groups gain XP. That I recall, there was a special mention to let each group kill you seperately once before you merge them, so I suspect merging them without that pre-merge kill will result in different (less wanted) xp behavior (I would assume a non-sharing outcome, but never tested it). Not sure where to ask this regarding post-Curse.com move and built-in PvX links ...[edit source]

As a result of GuildWiki's move to Curse.com (yay for lookin good again!), it may be worthwhile/desirable/otherwise-creating-of-happiness to change the interpretation of the PvX:... embedded link notation to point to the new Curse.com-hosted gwpvx.com site rather than the old Wikia hosted site?

Just trying to be supportive.

I fear I foolishly edited the Nicholas the Traveler page to alter the link to PvX and *gasp* changed it from the soft-coded PvX: notation to a hard-coded http://gwpvx.com notation. So now my sanity has (at least partially) returned and I thought to try to ask this of someone more wiki-smart than I before I went too nuts with well-intentioned edits that actually messed stuff up.

Zeewabbit 07:17, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

Don't worry about the clutter, it's what the revision control system is for. As for the PvX links pointing to the wrong place, it's a known issue and it's being worked on. So the invisible elves of IRC tell me, anyway. — ızǝℲ 07:41, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
Any interwiki links starting with pvx: will be handled automatically when the interwiki table gets updated. Any that start with w:c:pvx:, however, will need to be corrected to pvx:. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 13:21, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
Where can we request interlinks? And it probably does make sense to add one for w:. --◄mendel► 14:05, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
w: = Wikia. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 14:09, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the responses. I guess, with a night's sleep behind me, I realize now "But of course they know!" That said, the Nic page did previously use the w:c:pvx: nomenclature, so when the interwiki table gets its lovin', if nobody else adjusts my sledgehammer http link, I'll change it to pvx:. I see no evidence that anyone edited their userpage over on guildwars.Wikia on the 16th. If you did, please remember that your edit will only be saved if you actually make a change to your page (or create it with some text if it doesn't exist yet). Ok, I just want to see weapons... ...NOTHING ELSE![edit source]

Well so where can I go to find pics for weapons and armor and things that don't, that DON'T include inappropriately dressed characters? I want to see what a weapon etc looks like, but I don't want to see the sort of things that those without conscience have no problem viewing, specifically, characters wearing nothing. I don't have to explain why, you know, I just don't like to...well, see that stuff. I am looking for pictures of ITEMS... So is there some resource out there, some website that, you know, only shows what I want to see?

The reason the screenshots of weapons are taken with characters not wearing armour is that many armours obscure the weapon in some way, e.g. having a similar texture, and so that it is evident that it is not about the armour or anything, but that the screenshot is about the weapon. The characters are still clothed, so I fail to see anything wrong with their "way of dressing". --TalkpageEl_Nazgir 17:03, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, for most of them it's like they're wearing a bathing suit. How is that inappropriate? —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 17:34, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
To add: The characters are included to give a sense of scale, which can be a good thing (god that thing is tiny :P). I don't know of a documentation site that doesn't include the character, though. GWW used to, but it seems they stopped doing that. My favorite example was reverted to Jennalee's version (i.e. with character) on May 4th, 2011. --Vipermagi 17:53, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

Winds of Change still active despite abandoning quests[edit source]

Hi, I started the WoC series of quests (did about 3 or 4 of them) but decided that I didn't want to continue so I abandoned what quests I had remaining. Trying to do carto on Shing Jea Island I was horrified to find that I am still facing level 25 foes in normal mode. Is there some quest that I still haven't abadoned or do I have to follow through with the WoC chain of quests before things return back to normal in Factions. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.14.16.239 (contribs) .

It's just like War in Kryta - once you start the storyline, it's active everywhere. Except in this case, the changes don't revert when you finish it. You'll need to party with someone who hasn't started WoC at all if you want the pre-WoC version. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 14:03, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

From my understanding, users cannot create pages but edit 5 times else where. Which means, your 5 edits here have now lead you to the creation of your page. It might be an idea for any "new user" in the future that's an actual user to ask for anyone (admin, b-crat, (whom ever they'd like) to create their page and then they can edit. Even maybe specify something like, welcome to (user's page) from user who gets request and then the user can edit that page and place whatever he/she would like in their pages. 72.148.31.114 00:22, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
We limited page creation to autoconfirm only due to the increase in registered spammers bypassing other filters and things to create their spam in userspace. The time requirement on autoconfirmation was lifted a short time ago. I would rather not see admins creating a lot of new userpages for users, but rather than using a welcome bot, you might want to consider editing MediaWiki:Welcomecreation to provide every new user with some basic information when they register, like how to become autoconfirmed, where to go if they are looking for help, and pointing them to the most relevant policy pages. This was implemented on Diablo Wiki a short time ago, and seems to be working well. -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon.png talk 10:03, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

What are you referring to? We don't have a vetting system so when you hit save it goes live. If you are experiencing problems with pictures that's server based lag, if it's regular edits I would suggest purging your cache (ctrl+shift+r generally, or click on the clock in the upper right), if that doesn't immediately bring up text changes there's something janky going on.--Łô√ë Gigathrash sig G.jpgîğá†ħŕášħ 22:51, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
(edit conflict) I assume you're talking about file uploads, since that's what you did right before you posted here. There are multiple levels of caching going on that can prevent a file from appearing on a page for a time. The wiki caches the thumbnail of the image as well as a fully rendered version of the page itself, and of course your browser also caches both the webpage and the file.
For a new file upload, the problem is usually the page cache. To force the wiki to clear the cache and re-parse the page, add ?action=purge to the end of the URL. (Alternatively, you can go to your Preferences, under Gadgets, and activate either the Purge or UTCLiveClock gadgets to add an easily-accessible "purge" link to every page.) —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 22:54, 25 October 2011 (UTC)

Build download[edit source]

I have tried downloading a builds, but when i go to upload them in game it says the "Template code does not apear to be valid"

I have tried downloading this in explorer and in firefox, I still cannot get them to work.

Any ideas how I can fix this?

Thanks much

If you are downloading from PvX, there's a bug in the code that produces the template via download. There are two ways to resolve this:
  • Instead of downloading, copy the code from the article, open any template for any character on your account, paste the code into the code field, then save the template under whatever name you prefer.
  • Download the build and fix the file: open up the file using any text editor (including Notepad). Remove the extra line/white space at the top (the first line should be just the code, no spaces -- the rest of the file can be anything, including usage notes). Save the file. It will now load properly. 75.37.20.203 23:28, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

On the contrary: there are at least a dozen good reasons to have a second GW2 wiki (the two most important are: competition helped drive excellence in both wikis and the wikis offered two different approaches for advice, each of which was better for some people). However, they are all overshadowed by the lack of community interest in supporting this wiki (measured by the number of missing/incomplete GW Beyond articles that could be created with barely more effort than pasting text from the official wiki).
It might have been a Series of Unfortunate Events that split The Guild Wars Wiki into [email protected], GWW, and Guild Wiki, but there were some good outcomes along with the unpleasant. Even today, this wiki includes data and suggestions wiki that hasn't been migrated to the official wiki (notable examples include: exact cartography measurements, portal jumping details, Nicholas-item farming tips, and newbie-friendlier walkthrough advice).
@OP: If you think there ought to be an unofficial wiki for the new game, then register an account here (and encourage others to do so) to demonstrate to Curse (or another potential host) that there's a big enough community to sustain the alternative (and make it worth their while to provide the technical backbone for it).  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 15:38, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
I'm basically the only one active on [email protected] and I've been, when I could/can, changing things into fan fiction. I strongly do not think we need 3 wikis doing documentation. So, I've been redirecting people for documentation to this wiki and that one be a fun fan fiction, a twist on information, a different view that's not meant at all to be used in game. That being said, I'm glad to see some actually at least noticing this wiki. I just wish it was more active. There is a wikia 2 one, but that too is also fan fiction and I'm sadly redirecting people to the other. I do wish there was an alternate, expecially with the poor system of some of the administration and the "ability" of abuse there. Here, I am happy to see that no tool is used in abuse. I'd go into more detail, but I'll keep my mouth shut. Ariyen 16:42, 14 April 2012 (UTC) I'm banned & tbh, it's a personal judgment ban. There's been worse disruption than I'd ever caused.
As Ariyen said, a Guild Wars 2 wiki does exist on wikia, but it's nothing but garbage. It was created by a lone member despite widespread opposition, and we basically killed her. Felix Omni Signature.png 20:18, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
I keep using this wiki, even if some of the more recent items are not well documented because the "feel" of the wiki is more relaxed friendlier than the official wiki. This is hard to quantify, but it does exist. I understand the desire to have a single wiki, but I will be sorry to not have the next generation of this one available. Separ 21:13, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
I understand, it's basically my reason for being here too. But I do think that a gw2wiki won't have much use. GWW is already integrated into gw1, and A-net have stated that they will bind GW2W with their game much more iirc. This wiki has more or less died out, and despite me constantly linking to and talking about it to my friends and guild mates, nobody really seems to want to use this one anymore as far as I know. Starting a gw2wiki wouldn't be attainable I think. We had the advantage over gww that we already had everything when they started, but they caught up. If we have to start now, when everyone and everything is already at the official one, we just wouldn't be able to survive. For now, it seems gw2w will be a bit better than gww, but I'm not sure. I do hate the fact that you can't casually talk about things on their talk page, only about things to improve the page, while it was a lot of its charm. I loved spending hours on the Mursaat talk page and who knows where else, just theorising about things and discussing with other players. Sure, there's forums and stuff, but it's not the same community. It loses a lot of its charm right now, but starting a wiki with this community is bound to fail I'm afraid. And I'm repeating myself and ranting, and I'll stop now, sorry. --TalkpageEl_Nazgir 22:15, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

Login problem-------SERIOUS!![edit source]

Up until yesterday (8 July, 2012) I had a WIKI account that now can't even be found!! I'm still "undouble", I should still have a page, but today the system says "I don't exist" and worse, won't even let me create an account (It keeps asking me to "count the cats", but doesn't give me anyplace to list the answer----then just gives me an error message. So, what happened to WIKI overnight?

Select the images of the cats, that might help. 72.148.31.114 00:34, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
Are you Undouble at the official wiki? Nothing has happened to the wiki overnight and there's no evidence that there's been any contributions by a user named, "undouble". Even if the account was banned and all user articles removed, there would still be a record of contributions. 75.36.183.120 10:56, 11 July 2012 (UTC)
According to the user list starting with "Und*", there is no account "Undouble" registered here.
If you're having trouble with the captcha at account creation, make sure you have Javascript allowed for both guildwiki.org and asirra.com, then just select all the cats that are shown. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 12:48, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Elite Armor Crafters - Add Table: Crafting Materials Required[edit source]

I find it curious that the elite armor pages shows the cost in platinum for each piece but does not show the additional crafting material required. I would think that is a logical addition. For instance Vabbian Armor mentions it requires rubies and sapphires, but does not give the quantities or discuss linen or iron. I would like to replicate the popup that is displayed by the crafter on the crafter page. Something like this:

Item Material Money
Iron Ingot(s) Bolt(s) of Linen Ruby(s) Sapphire(s) Platinum Gold
Vabbian Helm 25 4 2 2 5 0
Vabbian Cuirass 75 12 6 6 5 0
Vabbian Gauntlets 25 4 2 2 5 0
Vabbian Leggings 50 8 4 4 5 0
Vabbian Boots 25 4 2 2 5 0
Separ 01:14, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
The issue is that you would have to list the materials for every profession on that page. That's why they have seperate pages per profession. 96.39.164.200 02:02, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
-- I (obviously) never clicked on the profession name link from an armor page. I guess I thought it would take me to general discussion about a profession. Thanks for the pointer. Separ 03:18, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
I was gonna say click on the armor link of the profession and it's there. I prefer it that way, than having to do what you suggested. Ariyen 04:35, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

Headgear.[edit source]

How do you stack an elementalist's headgear, if it can be stacked at all?
