Travel to Silent Surf[edit source]

Hello,

I am in Unwaking Waters and I need to get to Silent Surf. How do I do that?

BestRegards,

HSigerson

If you go via the Unwaking Waters (Luxon) outpost, there should be a portal. There are 2 small hills, one with Henchmen, and the other with the Xunlai agent, if I recall correctly. Inbetween lies the path to the Silent Surf portal. --- Ohaider!-- (s)talkpage 01:21, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

I am in Unwaking Waters Kurzick.

HSigerson.

Well, that's a whole different story. Go back to Cavalon, get the quest Befriending the Luxons, from Elder Rhea. And then proceed in the Luxon storyline. Gather 10k unspent faction, complete Gyala Hatchery (mission) and walk a looong road to Unwaking. --- Ohaider!-- (s)talkpage 03:11, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

serious problems with gameplay[edit source]

hi

today when i was playing guildwars whenever i had my cursor over a character, they're armor would go yellow, eventually all the walls in the challenge mission i was doin went yellow then when i came out of the mission, there was blue blocks underneath everybody, and always i had around a 5 second lag, even when i logged out to the character selection all the armors on my characters were yellow and i couldnt play it so i had to come off, do you konw why this happened, and if will happen again to me. Sounds to me like a memory shortage, but I'm not an expert on that --Gimmethegepgun 16:55, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Definitely sounds like a memory problem. Try closing down other programs while you're playing GW. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del, click on "Task Manager", and look for programs with a high Mem usage. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 17:29, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

unable to acces templates in vista x64[edit source]

Hi,

I recently reinstalled guild wars on my new computer. Before installation i moved the documents folder to the D:\ drive now when playing guild wars i can't acces my templates. the directory it stated as 'templates\skills' , that should be 'D:\Documents\Guild Wars\Templates\Skills'

So far i got ZERO response from support of ArenaNet.

thanks for a solution.

( moving the documents folder back is not a option for me )

Thanks

Ronny

We have that info on the Skill template article - for Windows Vista, Templates are saved to "<user profile directory>\Documents\Guild Wars\Templates\Skills". Eg. "C:\Users\John\Documents\Guild Wars\Templates\Skills"Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 21:24, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Mapping aids.[edit source]

One of my guildies informed that there is a program available in GW that helps with mapping by highlighting missed areas. Does anyone know if this program actually exists? If so is it legit, and where can I get it if it is?--Torn Cerberus 19:12, 25 July 2008 (UTC)Torn Cerberus

I believe what you're talking about is Cartography Made Easy, a TexMod package. Read the main article, GWW:Guide_to_modifying_in-game_graphics, for instructions on how to use TexMod. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 19:25, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
And it is legit, benign, and entirely sanctioned by ArenaNet (they can't help you with it though, since they didn't make it). Felix Omni Signature.png 19:26, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
Technically, no, the use of TexMod is not sanctioned: "We cannot condone the use of such programs" from the quote of Gaile Gray on the GWW article. However, from the same quote: "it is unlikely that we would actively pursue or action those who use such programs in a positive manner", so you're not going to get in trouble for using it. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 19:37, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
Is that the same post in which she talks about pickle swords? Felix Omni Signature.png 19:38, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
That's Emily Diehl, in the quote above Gaile. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 19:42, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, her. Her statement "As a general rule of thumb, we don't mind if you do things like this to make your own playing experience more fun. Some people really like to mod, and we recognize that this can often be a valuable learning tool" seems to be more or less an endorsement to me. Still, it's not a point worth debating, since the important thing is that TexMod won't get you banned. Felix Omni Signature.png 19:45, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
Eh, true enough. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 19:53, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Sick, Wrong and Depraved...and <Submitter's> Pics are Innappropriate Too!![edit source]

Those pics of weapons really need to be changed. I'm tired of seeing...NOT weapons, or having something else thrown up there. I think the least the submitter could do is find some decent clothes so that we can see, really, we're not immature little 6th graders sitting at the back of the class. So anybody got some DECENT weapon pics?

There is method to the reasoning. Weapon pics are taken with no armor on so that the players armor does not interfere with the visual of the weaponry. You get a much clearer concise view of the weaponry, without bulky armor in the way. It is not done in any attempt to show any half-assed nudity as you seem to feel. -- Isk8.png I~sk8 (T/C) 02:31, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
Method to our madness would be the appropriate words here. There are really no..inappropriate images are there? Rsz PLSig.jpg 02:35, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, I didn't feel that method to our madness was the best choice of words heh. I find them in no way inappropriate, but apparently this Ip does. Perhaps a reasoning as to why you find the images offensive. The official wiki does the exact same thing we do with their item images. Armor gets in the way, clips, and otherwise distracts from the item being portrayed. I cannot see any reason why a characters undergarments can possibly offend you. It is a feature of the game. It is not like there are completely nude animated characters portrayed. If you find it offensive, I don't understand why you play the game honestly. -- Isk8.png I~sk8 (T/C) 02:40, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
Sick, wrong, depraved and Inappropriate pictures and I was not informed because....? If you think that the base character models without armor are bad maybe you should have a good look at the overall game dynamics as well. You ever notice how all the females look like super hot James Bond girls and have like perfect tits? Um when it comes to gaming, sex sells dude. hero armor[edit source]

can u get better amor for your heros?

In the sense of armor level, for actual defense, no; heroes gain a set amount of armor per level up to level 20, and it can't increase past then. If you mean more stylish, then yes, you can get several upgrades for those. Felix Omni Signature.png 07:57, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Transferring items in pre-searing[edit source]

A friend created a new character in Pre and one of those blue info windows popped up saying something along the lines that you could transfer storage between characters at the arena in Ascalon. Is there some sort of storage like the xunlai that is available in pre-searing? And if so, how do you get to the arena in ascalon in Pre-searing. 71.166.62.112 17:38, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Not all skills available with Assassin Tome?[edit source]

I've got an assassin tome and I'd like to get "Critical Agility" but this skill doesn't show up in the list of available skills?

I thought it was just elite skills you couldn't capture? Is there a list of particular skills that aren't available with the standard skill tomes?72.81.212.62 00:28, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Critical Agility is not a skill that can be "unlocked" in the traditional sense, since it is both a PvE skill and Sunspear skill. --JonTheMon 00:32, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Critical Agility is a PvE-only skill, so it technically can't ever be unlocked. I'm pretty sure if you learn it from the Hero Skill Trainer, it won't give you any unlock message for it because of this. Same goes for Shadow Sanctuary, as well as any other PvE-only skill. --GEO-logo.png Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 00:33, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Movement Speed Increase/Decrease[edit source]

I was just wondering if movement speed increase/decrease skills were cumulative? Also, if it is, then does the second skill you cast increase/decrease your current or original speed? For example, i cast a skill that speeds my movement by 25%, then, while my first skill is still active, i cast a skill that increases my speed by 33%. What will my current speed be? Will it be 58% faster than my original(25+33=58), or 33% faster than my 25% faster speed, or will the 33% replace the 25%? (if the last one, is it only when the weaker one is cast first?). I'd appreciate some help. Thanks in advance...

Problem getting game to run since new update[edit source]

Hi Was just wondering if anyone else was having problems since the new game update yesterday. The game was working just fine then it said to log out as we needed to load a new guildwars game update. We logged out then have not been able to get back in the game since!!! Help its says Unable to write patch file. Any suggestions or anyone else having this problem

thanks a million

Try checking is GW.dat isn't Read Only for some weird reason, or if you're not running out of disc space. Also, If you're running a FAT32 file system, the maximum file size for a single file is 4 GB. You should chance the file system to NTFS if you didn't already. Other then that, I don't have any ideas. You might want to try reinstalling the game. Take out an installation DVD for GW, copy the files to your hard drive, and then replace the gw.dat file that was on the DVD with the one you have already on your disc. When you install from this, the program will repack and compress everything, also removing obsolete files with minimal download. If all else fails you might want to contact Support: http://help.plaync.com/cgi-bin/plaync.cfg/php/enduser/ask.phpPoki#3 My Talk Page :o, 06:24, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
Best install DVD to use is Eye of the North as it is most complete. If the gw.dat gets over 4 GB Anet will lose Windows 98 compatibility. I wouldn't be surprised if that was one of the reasons that there aren't going to be any further campaigns. --◄mendel► 10:22, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

You might want to image the program . Copy GW.exe icon( right click create shortcut) hit properties on the new icon use "C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" -images on the target line. This will compare and download missing files automatically. This can take a long time for the download to happen.Azwildbill 07:27, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

That's -image (without an S) but it won't help if he can't patch the game anyway. — Poki#3 My Talk Page :o, 07:53, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
A good test, before you reinstall anything, just to see if the GW.DAT file is the problem; go to the program folder (by default, C:/Program Files/Guild Wars/GW.DAT). Take the .DAT file that's there, and just move it somewhere else for a moment (move it to your desktop or something). When you start Guild Wars again, it'll see there's no .DAT file, and make a new one for itself. If it starts downloading and patching, then probably the old .DAT file was the problem. If not, you can just put the old .DAT file back just as easily. (if you reinstall the game, you actually might want to keep the .DAT file backed up somewhere just in case, because that one file holds everything you've loaded; without it, you've got to re-download everything when you go into areas for the first time.) --GEO-logo.png Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 18:57, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

Downloaded maps file?[edit source]

Hi, I've had to clear Guild Wars from my computer multiple times for various reasons, and each time, I have to redownload all the maps. I heard someone say once that they found the file/s with the maps so they saved them and didn't have to redownload them. Does anyone know anything about this? --68.18.96.157 00:03, 12 August 2008 (UTC)Morteki

I suppose you could try saving the GW.dat to an external storage device or such, and if there have been no updates since then, you should be able to run the game from that without having to do -image and download everything again. But that seems risky.
As for picking apart the .dat to find the map files only...I have no idea how you'd do that. Where did you hear this information? It's probably best to ask the question there/to that person. Entropy Sig.jpg (T/C) 01:17, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
I think the anon is referring to "map files" as in "all the files required to load an instance/map", not specifically to the textures that comprise the world maps. Your suggestion is actually very good - currently, a fully -image'd gw.dat file is around 3-3.5 GB, I think, which would fit well on a DVD-R. And since GW1 is now in maintenance mode, there shouldn't be very many large updates anymore (last week's was an exception), so that DVD could be used to restore your gw.dat for quite a while (you'd still have to re-download any updates since you burned it, of course, but compared to re-downloading EVERYTHING in gw.dat that would be tiny). You could re-burn your gw.dat file every couple months or so, if you needed to.
An easier solution, if you can manage it, is to simply move the gw.dat file somewhere else on your computer before removing the Guild Wars program folder. After reinstalling Guild Wars, just move the file back. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 01:27, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
IIRC, the gw.dat grows from special event data that are later unused. Get the gw.dat off someone with an EotN DVD and -image from that, and if you do it out of any special season, you could then burn the resulting file for keeps. --◄mendel► 06:48, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Adding a category[edit source]

For some reason I'm having trouble adding a category to a page. I feel like I'm overlooking something obvious. I edit the page, scroll down to the end, and add Category:Name surrounded by double brackets (where Name is the name of the category). When I click Show Preview, the whole section of the article where my category (or other previously existing categories) were is now blank. Am I missing a step? Shadowlance 20:58, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

I can add categories just fine. [[Category:Name]] adds a category, and you can link to the category without actually attacking the article to it by typing [[:Category:Name]]. Exactly what category are you trying to add to what article? — Poki#3 My Talk Page :o, 21:45, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
Category links do not show up in the article, you have to scroll down to the blue box at the bottom of the page. If that is empty, blame it on Wikia and Monaco and add the category anyway. Even if you made a mistake, we can then see what you're trying to do and correct it if necessary. --◄mendel► 22:20, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
Yep - it was just the Preview that was apparently incorrect. I'm faithful about using the Preview feature so that was what made it confusing. I went ahead and added the category and even though the Preview didn't show it, I saved the page and it was added correctly and appears to be as it should. In this case I was adding the multiple elite creatures category to the Stone Summit Blasphemer page. Shadowlance 01:39, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
Great! Please use "Support/Report a wiki bug" if it happens again (best to state your browser version and the wiki skin you're using, if you changed it). --◄mendel► 07:06, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
Categories should show in previews, you just have to scroll all the way down - they show up all the way at the bottom, below the edit box and the "Please note" section. ¬ Wizårdbõÿ777(talk) 15:57, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

What drops are common drops?[edit source]

New editors often add "common" drops to articles that we don't usually add. It happens often enough that I want to address this problem, either by writing a guide, or making a template that can be included in the relevant articles. My problem is that I haven't the faintest clue what exctly is considered a "common drop". common drop doesn't exist, drop isn't helpful, and loot is quite vague. --◄mendel► 10:43, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

Are H/H affected by lag?[edit source]

Are henchmen and heroes' AIs run on the client or the server? If their ability to interrupt foes does not suffer when you are lagging, they must be on the server. Has anyone observed anything in that regard? --◄mendel► 09:57, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

They should be handled server-side, otherwise users could find ways to boost their own hero's AI from their own computers. I've disconnected a few times in missions, and come back to find that my heroes finished the fight for me... the only downside is that they're programmed to follow you, and if you're missing, I can't imagine their AI still works perfectly. You can make most of the characters through specific character patterns on most keyboards. Alt+(impossible to remember number on numpad). You can usually find the characters and composition in the character map. Powersurge360 06:04, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
Like Ishmael said, I think there's a limit on what characters you can use... I'm positive Japanese/Chinese characters can't be used on a American/European account, at least for player character names. I don't have the option to test guild names and tags, seeing as I'm already in my own guild, but Character Map (generally found in Start Menu > Accessories > System Tools on Windows XP) is an option you can test (like Powersurge pointed out). My guess would be, however, that you only have access to Asian character sets on an Asian account. --GEO-logo.png Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 07:15, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
You can type whatever characters you want into the chat box, yes (I use the Microsoft Japanese IME for Office XP to type Japanese kanji/kana), but there are restrictions on character names, based on the territory you registered your account in: GWW:Guide to character creation#Decide character name (should've thought to check GWW before). —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 07:25, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
If your account is American/European you can't make a guild or character with a Japanese name. There are people with Japanese accounts that offer services and make guilds with any name you want, invite you then after you pay they hand over the guild leader position. (Don't know any unfortunetley. Ask around on International districts bigger cities) — Poki#3 My Talk Page :o, 20:33, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
Keep in mind that that option is filled with possible scams, as you've got to trust the other player to not simply take your gold and give you nothing in return. If you decide to do it that way, make sure you don't pay in advance. --GEO-logo.png Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 20:38, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
