This spell will only trigger when the damage is being dealt by a foe that can be targeted.
It will trigger before other protective enchantments. So if Protective Spirit is active this spell will still deal the full amount.
If the damage is dealt in separate packets simultaneously, such as from skills like Deathly Chill, this spell will only negate damage from a single packet. Which packet is negated depends on the skill.
