Talk:Focus item

From GuildWiki
Jump to: navigation, search

I'd normally erase this list and point to Category:Focus Items but that category doesn't have most of the types of focus items listed here. --Karlos 11:46, 2 Oct 2005 (EST)

I've put all focus items originally listed here into categories. I've also made this article not a list (was going to say "more than a list" but later I deleted the list). Not sure if you still feel this should be deleted. If so, I'd suggest move certain information into the Weapon article before deletion. -PanSola 06:58, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

Purple / Gold focus items not giving more then +3[edit source]

I just tried out 2 purple focus items that I did not meet the requirements on, one had +6 energy and the other had +12. In both cases I recieved a boost of +3 energy only.

  • I dont mind that, It makes -energy sets better when its only +3 and and not +6. That way you lose 2 energy. --Murphyp 02:40, 16 July 2006 (CDT)
If you're sure about this, change it... It's worthwhile knowledge. I'd much rather make a -energy set from a gold focus, but only if it DOES only give +3 (-2 total). I suppose I'll go check, too... Tain 12:51, 29 November 2006 (CST)
Ok, I checked it out too. Even gold focus items only give +3 energy when you do not meet the required attribute. Updated the article, too. Tain 13:56, 29 November 2006 (CST)
Checked again today and a different gold focus is giving me +6... this is a complete mindf***. I'll keep testing to try and work out what's what, would appreciate any help. Tain 10:56, 30 November 2006 (CST)

I think I have a purple focus that gives me +4 when not meeting the req.

A little note, Focus Item additional energy does not stack with Rune of attunment. Eg. if your character has 1 Runes of Attunment on their armour, you get a +2 energy to your stats, and if you put a focus item of +6 energy, your character will only get additional 4 points of energy.

This is incorrect. Are you sure you're meeting the requirement of the focus? --Fyren 23:30, 19 July 2007 (CDT)

Yep - played around with the skill window, same effect. (maybe it's a bug in the nightfall game)

Well, here's what i've found out:

1. ) Greens only give +3 when not meeting the req
2. ) Collector and Weaponsmith Items give a +6 despite the fact that they are blue
3. ) Gold items now always give +6, imo this fas fixed in an update

Alternate Divine Scroll graphic[edit source]

Can someone confirm that there's an alternate graphic for divine scrolls? It's asterisked, but the Divine Scroll page only has a single graphic. -- Gordon Ecker 16:19, 14 May 2006 (CDT)

Since no one's uploaded an alternate graphic for it for two months, I de-asterisked it. -- Gordon Ecker 02:13, 16 July 2006 (CDT)

Some kind of indication on collector-only foci and attributes[edit source]

I'm in favour of putting some kind of indication like a C in brackets beside foci that are only available from collectors, and beside attributes which are only available on collector versions of foci. -- Gordon Ecker 19:15, 15 May 2006 (CDT)

I'm pretty sure some of the Prophecies foci are actually core foci[edit source]

I'll be on the lookout for them. -- Gordon Ecker 02:33, 16 July 2006 (CDT)

Yep, just cross-referenced with the collector lists. Grim Cestas and Idols might be core too. -- Gordon Ecker 02:46, 16 July 2006 (CDT)
And they are. -- Gordon Ecker 02:06, 13 August 2006 (CDT)

plagueborn signets[edit source]

Do these actually exist? -- Gordon Ecker 00:54, 30 July 2006 (CDT)

It's been over two months, and according to the deletion log Plagueborn Signet was moved to Plagueborn Focus, I removed the red link. -- Gordon Ecker 19:26, 31 August 2006 (CDT)

Move[edit source]

I also would prefer "focus" but I am not aware of if the game calls them "focuses" or "focus items." --Fyren 05:05, 27 August 2006 (CDT)

I was always under the impression they are called Fcous items, not Focii. Any screen shots/references for either side? --Karlos 05:12, 27 August 2006 (CDT)
Focus Item is the preferred term on the website, but capitolization is inconsistent ([1][2][3]). Assuming they spell-check fan-submitted material, lowercase is preferred ([4][5]) when referring to focuses in general, which is consistent with the capitolisation of other item categories. However focus item is simply shortened to focus for the names of many Ritualist foci, focus is an acceptable abbreviated form of focus item. -- Gordon Ecker 19:26, 31 August 2006 (CDT)
And, as of today's update, it's officially 'Focus item', proposal withdrawn. -- Gordon Ecker 23:59, 25 October 2006 (CDT)

Plural[edit source]

I'd prefer we realize we're speaking English and not try to be edgy by using Latin plurals. --Fyren 05:34, 31 August 2006 (CDT)

'Foci' is the plural form of the noun 'focus', 'focuses' is what my dictionary calls the 'third-person singular simple present' form of the verb 'focus'. Besides, modern English is one of the few languages that doesn't convert loanwords, we've even got words with letters like 'é' that aren't even part of our alphabet. -- Gordon Ecker 19:26, 31 August 2006 (CDT)
"Languages" don't do things. People do. Nearly every noun loanword used in English for an appreciable amount of time has taken the English plural. Focus is no different (Webster, American Heritage, Random House, and Wiktionary all list both as plurals). I'm not saying it's wrong to say foci. It's also acceptable to spell resume, cafe, or whatever with or without the accent. But I'd rather we go with a plainer form that doesn't need the editor or reader to know grammar or spelling rules from another language. --Fyren 06:17, 1 September 2006 (CDT)
My imidiate thought is that we should try to get a general view of what is most common in-game. That is, by players. Anyone got any observations? Personlly, I've never seen them be refered to as foci, however, I'm not sure I've seen them to be refered to in plural at all. We could go with the more opinion-neutral plural "focus items" as another suggestion. 193.44.6.146 16:04, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
No, regardless of what the players think the plural of focus is focii. —MaySig.pngWarw/Wick 16:10, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
Regardless of what you think, the plural of focus is both focuses and foci. 193.44.6.146 16:38, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Relationship of energy bonus and requirement[edit source]

Should maximum energy Promotional Foci, be included in the "collector, crafter, and unique" category? Frostty1 19:27, 3 October 2006 (CDT)

Tried to make negative offhand, came out giving +1e[edit source]

I was making a negative energy set for my monk when something odd happened concerning the offhand. I got my sword with its -5 energy just fine, no problems there, so then came the offhand. I'm Monk/Elementalist at the moment, and so needing a focus that I do not have the requirement for, I decided to go for a Ceremonial Cauldron. I collected 5 Jotun Pelts and went to Ivar Stewbrewer and collected my Ceremonial Cauldron. At this point I did not know that anything odd was happening, so I just proceeded to Lions Arch to purchase the -5 energy inscription for it. After about an hour of leaving my message in the party search window, I got a PM, and got my -5 inscription no problem. I made sure it was -5 energy, so no mistakes there. I attached the inscription to the offhand, then equipped it, and this is where I noticed something was out of place. At this point, where my energy should have been 28, it was actually 31. I made sure that I wasn't wielding a main weapon, and checked all my armor to make sure I hadn't absentmindedly attached an energy rune or insignia, and I hadn't. So I unequipped the offhand, and my energy went back down to 30, where it should be. Equipped it again, and it went up to 31 instead of down to 28 where it should be. This offhand is blue, of course, since it comes from a collector, but it seems it is unfortunately giving me +6 energy instead of +3 as expected. I can provide screenshots if that would help sort this out. If there is no response within a couple of days, I will just get another offhand and salvage the inscription. Bug?[edit source]

Just in case anyone hasnt noticed (this may not be a major thing, but it wasnt mentioned in the article), if you aren't holding a wand, the offhand just kinda "floats" through your hand (not as if your holding it, as if its actually going through your hand), while your palm remains flat. Maybe it should be noted in article? (Sorry if it aint a big bug/anomaly w.e) ∞ ∞IPO∞ ∞ 01:08, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Onyx Focus?[edit source]

Is there no Onyx Focus? I have just been made aware of Onyx weapons and I've been looking around to see what a focus looks like, but there doesn't seem to be one. I've seen the staff and scepter so am I missing it? Max2562 18:17, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

Never heard of it. Entropy Sig.jpg (T/C) 19:32, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
