Russian interlanguage link

User:Foundreason sent a request to me through email to add an interlanguage link to the Russian GuildWikia, http://ru.guildwars.wikia.com. I have submitted a request here for Wikia to setup a database link between the wikis. When that is done we can add the actual link to the main page here. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 14:25, July 5, 2010 (UTC)

Completed. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 12:31, July 6, 2010 (UTC)
Welcome comrades. --Wolfie Wolfie sig (talk|contribs) 13:06, July 6, 2010 (UTC)
So after a few months, that Russian wiki is still a complete vandal fest with goatse plastered in half the comments and not a single worthy article to stand up for it. If you argue that providing a link to it would invite contributors, I disagree, and I don't see this wiki having even a remote chance at this point. If you want me to elaborate why, I can try. But as of now, I simply don't want to see a link to that disgusting parody of a site from this wiki, and I hope you agree. Rose Of Kali Rose Of Kali SIG 16:11, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, mendel already killed all the links to inactive wikis. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 16:21, 17 December 2010 (UTC)

Write me a line (edit the editcopy) and I'll copy it to the real page. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 16:24, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
Dec 13. :P Oh, and if you think there's a better spot, by all means put it there, like maybe as a sub-bullet to Armor, alongside Runes and Insignia. Rose Of Kali Rose Of Kali SIG 16:47, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
Costumes are a completely different type of item from armor, so no sub-bullet, but I moved it up to just below armor, since they are similar (affect character's appearance). —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 17:34, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
Perfect. That was the reason I wasn't sure where to put them. Exactly what I wanted on the Costumes navbox, too. Thanks. :) Rose Of Kali Rose Of Kali SIG 21:03, 17 December 2010 (UTC)

Idea...

I know this may not be a good idea, but with the recent vandalisms of the actual page... What about just allowing registered editors to edit the page? If ips have anything, they could either suggest or register? I know it may not be the best idea nor fair to users, but I feel this could help with vandalisms... thoughts? Ariyen 18:03, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

It's being taken care of. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 18:11, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

Ty

This has absolutely no relevance to anything really but whoever put the time and effort to get this site up instead of the wikia one, thank you very much :)

Community news

I think we should find a spot for community news (starting with the Curse GvG tournament) on the main page. Felix Omni Signature 01:51, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

News section

Is the HoM calculator still "new"? Isn't that from October-ish? Viruzzz 07:03, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

I'd rather it be left there for a way for people to access it. (Ariyen) 72.148.31.114 07:08, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
It can still be on the main page, but I think it's a bit old to be calling it news. Viruzzz 07:17, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
Where would you put it? To me, the news is it as it still is news. Ariyen 08:40, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
After er-reading all the MainPage sections I don't think it should be there at all. It's too old to be news in my opinion, and in essence it doesn't really affect anything in Guild Wars 1 Viruzzz 09:17, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
It's readily available from the Guild Wars 2 website. We focus on GW1 here. Felix Omni Signature 12:12, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
It lists GW1 achievements in a compact overview. Can't we integrate it better with the wiki? --◄mendel► 17:22, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
I agree and that's partly why I think it should stay. I would like someone to integrate it better as well. Ariyen 23:04, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

"an unofficial wiki"

I noticed today that GuildWiki is billed as "an unofficial wiki" rather than "the unofficial wiki" on the main page and in the page title. I could have sworn that we used to be THE unofficial wiki; am I imagining it? And more importantly, why shouldn't we change it now? The is much more credible than an. Felix Omni Signature 16:12, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Well, if you want to be technical, we aren't the unofficial wiki. All the non-English wikis are also unofficial.
Spot-checking the page history, we were simply "a wiki guide" prior to June 2009, and since then we have been "an unofficial wiki." Doesn't look we've ever been "the unofficial wiki."
However, technicalities and page history aside, I think it would be fine to change it to "the" at this time. I doubt anyone would get on our case for seemingly excluding the foreign-language wikis. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 16:23, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
It's not excluding per se, most of those are part of the GuildWiki project. Felix Omni Signature 17:36, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
I think the real reason why we aren't "the" unofficial wiki is PvXwiki (now gwpvx.com). --◄mendel► 18:15, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
Other possibilities: "The original Guild Wars wiki" or "The independent Guild Wars wiki." Felix Omni Signature 18:20, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
I like The Original Guild Wars Wiki (or variations thereof), but I've gotten flak (without explanation) for using that term on GWW. Independent is also good.
Some ideas we should not use: 'The Guild Wars Wiki that doesn't ban people we don't like; The friendly Guild Wars wiki; The useful Guild Wars wiki; and the The innovative Guild Wars wiki. Also not very PC: the Guild Wars wiki without a good tagline; and this space for rent.
Ideas that I don't love, but might spark someone else's creativity:
  • Before there was ANet's Wiki, there was Guild Wiki;
  • The other Guild Wars wiki; and
  • the Mother of all Guild Wars wikis.
 — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 19:46, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
I like "the original" cause it's true. — Viruzzz 21:15, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
I don't agree with the The Original Guild Wars Wiki, because of the flank from people. So many would still consider the wikia one to be the original, despite that it got moved to here and that one is supposedly being fan wiki (Which so many *cough*for some reason*cough* don't seem to understand or know.) I prefer the latter, which is the Independent Wiki. After all, this wiki is on it's own and hosted by Curse. It doesn't have to use a lot of "specialty" as it just has the logo at the bottom with links to other wikis, guru, and more sites. It doesn't have to use a special wiki software like "Oasis". Ariyen 23:11, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
Oasis is not a piece of software, it is merely just a bunch of formatting & style code. ∵Scythe∵ 23:37, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
I don't think we're really independent if we're hosted by Curse. Just a thought. — ızǝℲ 23:48, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
Fezi, look up "editorial independence". We're independent of the people we report on.
Also, kudos to TEF: his suggestions may not be useful, but they're funny. We should strive to be the wiki with the funniest tagline, at least in April. It doesn't require 4 weeks of voting for us to do it, so I don't see why we shouldn't. --◄mendel► 01:13, 13 March 2011 (UTC)
Ok, Mendel, you're on:
  • The funny Guild Wars wiki
  • The not-really-independent-because-we're-hosted-by-Curse independent wiki
  • The anti-Oasis Guild Wars wiki
  • The Guild Wars wiki that strives to have the funniest tagline in April
That should get us through to May.  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 04:40, 13 March 2011 (UTC)
Pfft!
  • What's GWW? Oh, you mean that wiki that was here after us? Gwiki, was there ever any better?
  • The Guild Wars Wiki with less drama
  • GWW might have Poke, but we have mendel & ish who we value equally and would be extremely sadface if either left.
what are names? I have sentences! ∵Scythe∵ 04:45, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

Should the Flux effect of the week be added?

Should the Flux effect be added in the area with Zaishen quests, Nicholas collectables, and such? GW-Susan 16:06, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Absolutely.  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 16:13, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
Is it weekly? I thought it was monthly. And we have no clue if it's going to be on a "cycle" or if the order will be random. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 16:20, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
So call it a monthly effect. And, although we might not be able to predict it, we should still post it on the main page (no reason to make people go looking elsewhere for it).  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 17:30, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
It is monthly, and I personally hope they'll come up with a new effect every month until GW2 comes out, but we could certainly find a place on the main page. Felix Omni Signature 21:21, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
I just started working out the Flux thing to work like the forecasts. ({{Flux}}->unknown) If it's okay you may add this to the main page - or give other suggestions or whatsoever ;) Kaede 18:55, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
I say we don't bother with the complicated templates until we know for sure that it will be cyclical. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 19:17, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
Okay, that also sounds reasonable. Kaede 19:26, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

How about adding a direct link to each of War in Kryta and Winds of Change?

Instead of having to scrounge around for each of War in Kryta or Winds of Change and (presumably whatever links into Nightfall), why not have direct links to these on the main page, say under missions or quests? In fact, why not a link to each campaign (so, Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall, Eye of the North, and then WiK and WoC which then leads to sub-links? This could be very helpful to newer players, especially. GW-Susan 16:12, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

We don't have everything on WiK, I think... Ariyen 17:53, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
Now would be a good time to start then :P Aloha, Mauirixxx 18:33, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
Just need to find out what we have and try to add what we miss. Also, figure out what character I'd want to use for WiK... Also, ya know it's harder to vq with wik stuff active (even if you finish) than it was without. :-( Also, apparently it stays active once you start or finish it on a character - account wise... hmm, shall finish my current sandbox project first. Then WiK. Anyone wanna help? Ariyen 21:28, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
WiK will continue to be "active" after completing the story if you have any Shining Blade Bounties in your quest log. Otherwise, all explorables should revert to the non-WiK version. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 21:32, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
Don't have any bounties active. Ariyen 22:19, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Current events cleanup

I cleaned up the "Current events" box by removing all of the "Tomorrow:" listings. That was a fine idea when we only had the 3 original Zaishen quests and Nick to deal with, but now we have 4 Zaishen, Nick, Langmar's bounties, and Shining Blade bounties, and it just looked too cluttered. Anyone who wants to "plan ahead" can use the Daily forecast page.

I await the inevitable backlash. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 21:38, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

No backlash, but I don't really mind the tommorrow things on the main page. Arnout aka The Emperors Angel 21:57, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
I prefer current over what's going to happen tomorrow. As Ish said, they can find the tomorrow pages on the daily forecast, etc. 72.148.31.114 21:59, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
We should probably have some sort of link to the forecast page from the main then.--Łô√ë Gigathrash sig Gîğá†ħŕášħ 07:37, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
It's there, I just merged it with the "Daily" header. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 15:23, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
I actually find the tomorrows very helpful and would hate to see them go, but I have to agree it was getting too big. So I have tried to place them next to the currents and shorter them a bit to save space. How about that? EM Signature ***EAGLEMUT*** TALK 21:05, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
That still looks too cluttered to me. Simply having the 2 differing font sizes mixed together makes it feel yucky, for some reason. (I tried to come up with a way to get rid of the "(Farming guide)" link for the traveler, but couldn't think of anything practical, which is why that's still there.)
Frankly, the whole bloody thing could use a redesign, but I don't have the time or imagination to do that. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 21:12, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

Current events "Last update"

Just looking at the page I wouldn't actually be able to tell if it's a week (or a year, for that matter) out of date ~_~""" -PanSola 23:51, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

Technically, that should never be possible, because the default page cache expiration is 24 hours, i.e. it will never be more than a day out of date. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 15:25, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
I've learned not to trust cache expiration time in real life. It was a slightly painful lesson. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 21:36, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
