theres a new one i found, i took a picture but the name of it didnt show, its called something like "Dusty Urn" all it said when i oppened it was i got a stain on my sleeve. forget that, this is for a quest.

So far I've opened three of these. One had ~1.1k and a gold wooden boar scepter, one had ~2k and a gold dragon hornbow, and the third had ~2.1k and a gold aureate lamp. The golds were all crap, but it looks like all chests DO drop a gold item... DKS01 05:24, 21 December 2006 (CST)

I wonder if the quality / quantity of items / gold is favour related like other drops. DOn't really want to test it out of favour but if anyone has tried and can remeber maybe note it here? Raxous 08:26, 21 December 2006 (CST)

The quality seems to be related to the difficulty of the area. --Theeth Assassin (talk) 13:52, 21 December 2006 (CST)

a) A map of treasure would be really nifty

b) This gold, is that dropped on the ground and shared amongst all party members? So it would be best to go alone or to go with party of people who can each still open the treasure? --Bob III 11:52, 21 December 2006 (CST)

Most of these places have maps because they are near bosses Xeon 11:56, 21 December 2006 (CST)
The amount of gold goes directly in your bag, it is not shared. --Theeth Assassin (talk) 13:52, 21 December 2006 (CST)

Farming these with two guildmembers they both got the same item from a treasure chest in realm of torment, different stats tho, and the base merchant value was 660 gold - pretty high lvl drops. 84.49.225.3 18:02, 21 December 2006 (CST)

They don't only drop gold items in one of the "Do Not Touch" I got a ruby instead of a gold item.Dark Kal 11:39, 23 December 2006 (CST)

its either a ruby, diamond, sapphire or a gold item from what i have seen Xeon 11:55, 23 December 2006 (CST)

Is there any source or quote telling us these are not permanent? The update log doesn't read like it actually... Jinnai 21:54, 23 December 2006 (CST)

I see no source what so ever to the not permanent. Why would they not be permannet the are mentioned in uder the sub heading OTHER UPDATES. Some one is trying to justifed wasteing there wintersday time framing chest.

"No, the chests are for the holidays. They are not permanent." from [1], which was posted in the Treasure Chest article's discussion page, as Xeon tried to tell people. Capcom 21:13, 24 December 2006 (CST)
There is a thread at gwonline.net forums in which Gaile says that the chests are probably permament, but she can't get an official confirmation at this time.here
Confirmed - the treasure chests are PERMAMENT. Link.. Someone should edit all the articles about them (I don't have the expertise or the time).

Treasure "counters" have been reset (As of 12:00am GMT January 20th) Characters can now RE-OPEN ANY previously opened treasure ONCE more (Chests, DNT & Buried). I will check if unopened treasure can now be opened twice by characters who had not opened it before the treasure coun ter reset. I have opened at least one chest in all the areas...NEVER got even a purple item, much less a gold. Seldom got more than a few gold out of the chests. ALSO, neither DNT dropped anything. So ... unless the last few chests are REALLY awesome, seems very doubtful will get even close to 20k out of the remaining few chests.71.211.17.237 23:58, 17 February 2007 (CST)

The chat log doesn't report the rare (or gem) dropping, but it will always fall out and land on the ground like from a chest (ie. the same spinning animation). Therefore it sounds to me like they did drop, but you didn't notice them and so failed to pick them up (I did this once early on as well). RossMM 20:10, 18 February 2007 (CST)

Made an edit of the elite skills map by Elminster (because it included Nightfallen Areas) and turned it into a Treasure map. This one is for downloading and editing so people can check with it on their own pcs, I've included the way I personally use the map so... enjoy. Norrie 21:03, 27 March 2007 (GMT+1)

Merging the three lists into one[edit source]

Is it just me or would it be much better to have one list of all treasures in the game instead of three separate lists for the three types. The different types are merely visual, the function is exactly the same. Unless anybody objects, I'll merge tomorrow. --Tetris L 08:20, 22 January 2007 (CST)

I agree. the specific names should contain a redirection to this page. Foo 08:27, 22 January 2007 (CST)
Don't get me wrong, I don't want to merge the articles. Only the lists. The result would look something like this:
Region Buried Treasure Treasure Chest Do Not Touch
Istan Issnur Isles, southeast from Beknur Harbor, near the troublesome flamingos. (Map) Mehtani Keys, southeast from Kodlonu Hamlet, in a shipwreck. (Map) -
Kourna Arkjok Ward, on the small island in the northeast, right next to Jurani the Merchant. (Map) Jahai Bluffs, near Acolyte of Balthazar. (Map) Bahdok Caverns, at the treasure trove near the southeastern corner. (Map)
Vabbi The Mirror of Lyss, small island to the south, near Shezel Slowreaper. (Map) The Hidden City of Ahdashim, near the southeastern platform. (Map) Forum Highlands, near Commander Sadi-Belai. (Map)
The Desolation The Ruptured Heart, near Shahin. (Map) The Sulfurous Wastes, near Alem the Unclean, inside Temple of the Monoliths. (Map) (Not during Gate of Desolation (mission)) -
Realm of Torment - -
Design details of the table (like column width) are subject to discussion. I think we can shorten the text desciption, or get rid of it completely. The maps say more than a 1000 words. --Tetris L 08:34, 22 January 2007 (CST)

"A magical force prevents you from touching the treasure."[edit source]

The DNT outside of Tihark Orchard (when it spawns 4 ruby dijins) says (as above)
"A magical force prevents you from touching the treasure.".

Yes their drops, apart from that no, you have already used that DNT before and you are only allowed to open it once per char (not including the reset that happened recently) -- Xeon 01:29, 3 February 2007 (CST)
It says so for me to, and nothing happens?? wtf is up with that Falafel 14:40, 9 May 2007 (CDT)
It's a simple rewording that the treasure hasn't reset for your character yet, while keeping in with the roleplaying. ex: "You dig and dig, but find nothing", when attempting to access Buried Treasure that hasn't reset.
I had never used that "Do not touch" before with that char. but 1 of my other chars had. Falafel 04:07, 26 June 2007 (CDT)

same thing happened to me, but it was the first time i had opened a do not touch, EVER! i still got a gold item, but id like to know what would have happened if i had "reached the treasure"

I can account for this as well. I opened/touched this on one of my characters when I first saw it. I believe a different character. But that was within the first three months of Nightfall being out, and this is well well well past the reset date. The character who just touched it has beaten the game, and is my first character to run through and open all treasures (I think I opened two prior to this, before I partially realized what they were). --Mooseyfate 05:15, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

listing drops on weaponry articles?[edit source]

I have seen a number of edits on weaponry articles where it says it can be dropped from the chest. Should we be listing these are drops? Does everything in Kourna drop from a chest located in Kourna? -- Xeon 04:16, 3 February 2007 (CST)

I managed to get a superior vigor =D

Yet another reset.[edit source]

It seems that for some people the treasures are available a third time starting today. that probably means that every chest resets 1 month after the last time a character opened it. i opened them all with my warrior a third time today, my ranger cant as he opened 2 weeks ago. -- Menzies

Hmmm, they were rolled out around December 20th, were "reset" on January 19th, and reports coming in they available a potential "third" time just after February 20th, am getting the impression these treasure chests are available on a monthly basis (ie, you can milk em one a month), be interesting to see if this trend continues around March 19-20th. --Wolfie 03:57, 21 February 2007 (CST)

Yep, just went and tried and was able to open for a third time with my monk. Gandorf 04:53, 21 February 2007 (CST)
I'm unable to get anything from the Jahai chest, so it seems that it must be either a time-delayed thing (I'll check again in a couple of days), or for some reason they're only reset for a few people. RossMM 08:21, 21 February 2007 (CST)
I just checked the Chests in Jahai Bluff and in Arkjok Ward and both were empty for me. Alesain 10:02, 21 February 2007 (CST)
Empty in Jahai Bluff and Isnurr Isles.. I'll check in a few days to know if it's reseted on regular date or if there is a timer for each character.. — Corsaire Corsaire Signature.gif 11:24, 21 February 2007 (CST)
Could be they are reset one month after you open them? I dunno, I'll have to start noting when exactly I open them I guess. --Rainith 12:03, 21 February 2007 (CST)
Yea, that's what Menzies said in the topic header. ^^ I'd like to know for certain though. Alesain 12:34, 21 February 2007 (CST)
No luck for me either, checked two treasure chests with a charcter that had opened twice already (ie, once before and after the Jan 19th reset), but this time, got the "already opened" messages, so the one month or (x) days after you open idea is looking the more likely. Same as Rainith, will start noting date / time when successful able to open one, if others do the same, we might hopefully over time be able to start to see a pattern (if there is one :D) --Wolfie Wolfie sig.jpg (talk|contribs) 18:23, 21 February 2007 (CST)
Opened all chests, nothing in them. Also, I heard they reset monthly. Mrguildboi 19:11, 21 February 2007 (CST)

reseting indet I just checked the one in Nightfallen Jahai, it had reset for that char and I specifically remember opening it as soon as it was available the first time and as soon as it was reset the second time, so it might very well be a one month timer per chest per character. --Theeth Assassin (talk) 20:18, 21 February 2007 (CST)

I've opened them all over again for the 3rd time, although I did notice this time around than purples are dropping. On none of my previous runs to open the chests, all were golds.--— xis10al Xis10al sig icon.jpg 21:53, 21 February 2007 (CST)
Yeah, I had some pretty crap drops too (clean req 11 Steel Daggers with higher salvage inscription, wow!). Gold amount seems to be the same though. --Theeth Assassin (talk) 22:32, 21 February 2007 (CST)

Another reset? I know what ill do the whole next night... ^^

Purples??? WTF? I thought it was either golds or a gem. Hmmm. 132.203.83.38 22:41, 21 February 2007 (CST)

Alright now i can open them with another character of mine. i clearly remember back in january that when i found out they were available to be opened again i loaded a running build and rushed them all with my warrior, then waited a couple of days to open with ritualist and mesmer. Now chests are available a third time for my mesmer aswell. the monthly theory gains consistency Menzies 02:38, 22 February 2007 (CST)

A treasure that I had opened the week before Canthan New Year is still marked 'used' now, so it must have been reset before then. — User:Kyrasantae kyrasantae 05:39, 22 February 2007 (CST)

XD Foo 10:08, 22 February 2007 (CST)

Theory gets hit - i was able to open with my mesmer (last to open 2nd round), but not with warrior abd ranger who i remeber being 1st ones to open chests after reset (cahracter with running builds got to be 1st to open in case reset was "fixed" and they were able to get to chests fastest :) ), dont think that there is really per char or per chest timer ... Theorycould be that once all character opened everything, one random of them gets reset, after it is done opening them all, another random character on account gets reset (but delayed by few days). That would make sense - same incone no matter how many characters you have, "ballanced" Grima.worm@seznam.cz 08:55, 23 February 2007 (CST)

3rd reset - purples[edit source]

It seems that chance of purple from chest after 3rd reset is proportional to amout of chests opened:

my data (character after 3rd reset, opened all chests two times already):

g - gold p -purple

1-g, 2-g, 3-g, 4-p, 5-g, 6-g, 7-p, 8-g, 9-p, 10-p, 11-p, 12-p

similary, gold amout also seems to be proportional to amount of chests opened, Domain of Pain chest opened last netted 1,739 gold, Nightfallen Jahai opened before last netted 1,878 gold, instead of their previous.

anyone else care to add their purple/gold ratio? Grima.worm@seznam.cz 10:31, 23 February 2007 (CST)

Another character: 1-g, 2-g, 3-p, 4-g, 5-g, 6-p, 7-g, 8-p, 9-g, 10-p, 11-p, 12-g this set looks less convincing, but there are more purples in later part Grima.worm@seznam.cz 12:26, 23 February 2007 (CST)
My ranger, who opened all the chests twice before definitely got less gold upon the 3rd run. This time I did them all together with a guildie who had not opened any of the chests before and at every chest he got at least 10% more gold than me. Also I got noticeably more purple items this time (1-p, 2-p, 3-p, 4-p, 5-g, 6-p, 7-g, 8-g, 9-p, 10-g, 11-g, 12-g), whereas he got only gold ones. So yes I'd say there is definitely a decrease in the amount of money and golds over time. Will have to wait another month to see exactly how much though. Liselle Morrow 07:49, 4 April 2007 (CDT)

First, I've opened all chests with my monk for 3rd time for him - 3 purples/less gold (so far in last two times I was getting golds only and "normal" amount of gold - normal = over 3k in torment). Then I switched to my warrior (never opened any treasure chest with him) - all golds and "normal" amount of gold. Next was necro (his 3rd time to be) - no drops from chest. Next was mesmer (again 3rd time) - 4 purples and again less gold. I think that my example shows that game records how many times specific character opened treasure chests... Rafal 12:56, 23 February 2007 (CST)

Seems like this is true, but would love this tested with character that only opened chests only once or even never before. Another character was avaiable (as with others, opened chests two times already) and this time started with torment chests and worked backwards towards newbie chests, torment chests gave normal amout of gold (3k+), but newbie ones that i opened last gave only ~1/2 of what they usually give (~300 gold each), here is sequence: g, g, g, p, g, p, g, g, p, p, p, p - sems like definitive shift towards purples for last ones Grima.worm@seznam.cz 02:55, 24 February 2007 (CST)
1st and 2nd time through were all gold items, but 3rd time through had more purples the more treasures I opened. Added a not recommend opening high-end treasures first, can't hurt to warn people until the dust settles down on that one :) 83.159.9.78 12:12, 25 February 2007 (CST)

I have not opened any on any character, at any time. So how would you like me to gater them?Cyrogenic 12:52, 24 February 2007 (CST)

I've deleted the note about later chests giving purples, because there doesn't seem to be any evidence to support it. A couple of reports that seemd to be slightly biased toward purples (out of who knows how many that weren't) mean nothing; the sample size is far too small for anything statistically meaningful. For the record, I just ran through them with my main character for the 3rd time, and got g,g,p,g,g,g,j,j,g,g,j,p (j=jewel), so if I was inclined to draw any conclusions from very insufficient data, I'd say later chests were clearly biased toward jewels. More realistically, I see no reason to think it's anything other than completely random. Copperthorn 02:47, 26 February 2007 (CST)

Tested with 2 characters (opening for second time, completely missed their first appearance), full runs both times. 1st run yielded 7g, 3p, 2j. 2nd run yielded 5g, 6p, 1j. Was unable to go on with other chars due to repetitious err40s.fR0z3n.S0u1 20:26, 26 February 2007 (CST)

i just went through with a couple of my chars. the first, all golds. the next got golds until vabbi or so, then purples from then on. Mr Dan 23:14, 16 May 2007 (CDT)

4th time opening them on my ranger (2nd main character/not the character that has been used to test whether chests had reset in the past), all purples, half the amount of gold, did them in Torment -> Istan order. Definite decrease in gold #. -76.166.23.65 21:58, 22 May 2007 (CDT)

im not sure what it means but my characters seem to take for ever to reset like 2-3 months. the reason i mention this is becuse i jest got a reset and now all most all my chests are droping purple after opening 6 chests ive stoped in the hopes that more time will yeild better drops but i jest got a purple from the cest in the domain of pain.

Top Secret Formula?[edit source]

It now appears that chests reset per-character on a cycle Anet does not care to divulge. From my own experience I suspect that it's as simple as 30 days (or thereabouts) from the last time that particular character opened a treasure -- whether of that type (treasure chest, dig here, or do not touch) or not matters, I've no clue. I base this on the fact that my Tyrian characters, all of whom opened the chest and dig here in Istani the last time they reset and have done nothing since, were able to once again open those on 2/21, whereas my Elonian characters, who have opened numerous treasures since the last reset can not. Granted, that's hardly definitive, but it's the best I've got.

Anyone have confirming or contradicting theories or experiences? -- 127.0.0.0

I think it resets monthly. The first reset was at January 19th. And people starting to find out they were reset on February 19th.
It is not strictly a month for resets, as my very active main character has been unable to open any treasures for a while now. (more than a month, closer to two)

All my chars with access only to Istan chests have had theirs reset but my character who opened them all in Elona (She opened them first too) hasnt reset. It may have a formula that considers how many chests they have access to (unlocked before) to determine how long it is til reset. --Atroso 20:45, 24 February 2007 (CST)

In the Gaile chat for the 23rd, she mentioned the fact that the chests do reset. They reset at different rates per character, and it is a secret formula that only the devs know. She said that it would be wise for the players try the high-end chests first, if it appears that they have been opened. Perhaps the values dimminish per chest? Moiax 23:52, 24 February 2007 (CST)

Yes, I think it is that because after opening a chest, your chances of getting quality drops from the rest drastically decline. Atma 00:32, 26 February 2007 (CST)

Dont think its montly, from couple of my characters some got acces month after reset, some didnt. Other theory was that chests reset eveytime month displayed by /age command changes ... but its not that case either. 147.228.209.168 08:01, 25 February 2007 (CST)

From my experience, the "Top Secret Formula" takes into account how many chests the character opened last time/has access too in determining the respawn on them. I had 3 Characters that can only access the 2 on Istani and the first 2 on the Mainland and all 3 of them have had their chests respawned a 3rd time (and on the first day it happened), while my 1 character that has access to all the chests has not had them respawned a 3rd time yet, last reset I opened on all characters the same day. - Former Ruling 14:55, 26 February 2007 (CST)

Well, for my personal experience, the day of the last reset, I ran my War, Paragon and Ranger through about 5-6 of the chests. Now, even more than a month since the last reset, I still can't open the two chests I've tried with my warrior. Craw 15:07, 26 February 2007 (CST)
Not really working: my necro and rager had opened same amount of chets (all) as other characters (P, E ...), but 1/2 of them didnt get reset. Similary, my assassin could not open chests (opened 4 before) yet dervish and Rt who opened 4 before could reopen them. Grima.worm@seznam.cz 08:41, 27 February 2007 (CST)

My Charakter which opened Chests 8 at first, 12 at second time could not open chests 'til now. Another Person in Guild told me that he could open all Chests 3 times 12/12/12. It does not seem to depent on online time, both me and that other person use their main charakter for opening (almost full time playing this charakter). Only difference is that my character opened more "normal" chests than other (114 vs. 40). Could be one parameter in formula how many high-level chests are opened. 212.80.224.243 14:07, 1 March 2007 (CST)

Just to add what little I know about the resets. I opened them all on my warrior the day the chests were implemented. 30 Days later, January 19th, I was able to open them all again. Just today I read that chests were "reset" once again, so I got on to check and sure enough, they were re-openable. I think the 30-days from last opening them makes sense, but I was not around GW that much in february. If I remember, I will check on april 7th to see if I can open them once again.(which is 30 days after today) --Mwpeck 14:56, 8 March 2007 (CST)

I think it has absolutely nothing to do with 30 days, that was just the time that the first reset happened, I suspect the changed it from a one-off, to a formula on that day. Since the first reset, nearly 2 months ago, all chests still remain empty for my main (Prophesies) character. 62.190.230.92 14:23, 15 March 2007 (CDT)

Just before the first reset my Paragon got the chest in Jahai Bluffs, and then after it he got it again. However even after all this time he is still unable to open that chest for a third time, so I'm inclined to believe that each chest does not reset after 30days. It may be that he opened other chests a week or two later and so the timer has not yet reset, but I'd be surprised if this was the case. RossMM 21:05, 16 March 2007 (CDT)

Ok, here I am, 30 days after me last post, 30 days ago, I opened 30 chests on my warrior, today, I tried again, and the chests I opened before, could NOT be opened agian. So either 30 days is wrong, or you must open all of the chests before any of them reset. --Mwpeck 15:46, 7 April 2007 (CDT)

I think it's been since March since I've been able to open any chests. 12.215.214.71 16:02, 13 June 2007 (CDT)

All my chars can open them in close to 30 day intervals except for my necro who hasnt been able to open one for at least 3 months.....the only possible explanation that i came up with is this...my necro gets used just about everyday for a few hours where as all my other chars barely see action for over 3hours a week....im guessing because my necro is used so much he is ineligible for a treasure reset....makes me sad but thats all i can think of....dunno how to sign...21 June 2007

I've been wondering about main chars reset on these chests, as some peoples main characters still get a 30 day turn around while others like myself, the reset is rare. I've taken to added 5 days to timer each time I've tried, and I've still only opened all the chests once.. that was 5 months ago, yet only used main char to do this and play that char nearly every day that i'm on...13 July 2007

I believe the following from considerable experience opening these chests as a variety of characters: Chests refill on a cycle that is individual character based, and this seems to be unaffected by which continent your character comes from. The loop is about 30-32 days long. Patches and events may or may not refill chests, however I beleive from experience that OPENING CHESTS BEFORE THEY REFILL WILL NOT ONLY YIELD NO LOOT BUT RESET THE TIMER ALSO. Hence, we have a lot of confusion on this page. less intelligent players assume a varied amount of refill theories then check the chests repeatedly and keep them from ever refilling, then whien on the discussion page about how its totally random. If you want your chests to refill and be usable on a normal basis, wait one month from exactly the time you last CHECKED a chest, + about 2 days to eb safe, then open every chest as every character you have and wait exactly one month + 32 days again before attemptign any more chests. This shoudl yield treasure every time, as it does for me. Pay no attention to peopel whining about how its different for everyone. its not. People who do not open their chests then reset the timer over and over get frustrated and post stuff that will confuse you. The method is concrete and simple.

Now some other notes fo interest from someoen whos been doing thsi alot. If you are openign a lot of chests as multiple characters, your loot rate will drop SIGNIFICANTLY. if youve already opened the majority of chests as multiple characters, after about three characters, your loot rate will drop. You will begin to get less gold and more purple salvage items. The more you do this the worse it gets. For instance, after four characters had opened their treasures, I was gettign about 1k from realm of torment chests, and purple armor salvages. If you want to avoid thsi, you must space out the tiems in which your characters open the chests. I do nto claim to knwo the exact tiem at which the code lets up on you, btu i suspect its a lot like the anti farm code in that if you go back to playing normally for a whiel the drop rate goes back up and the loot is good again. Id suggest about no more than two characters open chests aweek, spaced otu as much as possible. the average player has abotu 4 pve characters, so if you open one set of chests each week as a different character, you shoudl rake in the full amount over the coruse of a month as opposed to roughly 75% of the normal amount from doing all chars at once. Thanks for yur time. (68.63.233.200 15:06, 4 August 2007 (CDT))

I really don't think this is the case. In order to raise money quick I started running a few easy to reach chests on all my characters in NF (about 10, yes I have a lot) and all received equal amounts of money and gold items of equal value. This also counts for realm of torment chests doing approx. 3k.

Ok, I'm seconding the comments 2 paragraphs up. ANY VISIT OF A TREASURE WILL RESET THE CLOCK (character specific). If you visit a treasure and are unsuccessfull it starts the clock all over. So if you're constantly checking for a reset, then your constantly resetting the clock and will never get a reset. So next time you lute all the chests make a note of the date of the last chest visit. Then wait just over a month (to be safe as stated by the last user also) before visiting ANY of these treasures.71.37.24.94 10:51, 10 August 2007 (CDT)

Refills Restricted to Elonian Chars?[edit source]

I saw this in the main article, but is this really true? I coudn't tell from the discussion here. Swordfish56 10:45, 4 March 2007 (CST)

In my experience, resets are definitely not limted to Elonian characters. — HarshLanguage HarshLanguage 22:17, 4 March 2007 (CST)

Got each chest 3 times on a Prophecies character(warrior) a Canthan character(assassin) and an Elonian character(ranger). Lots of free st00f!

Another opening theory[edit source]

It's based on amount of gameplay - the less you play character the earlier you get refill - character that got all three refills were rarely played in moth that followed 2nd opening (mesmer, paragon, elementalist) while chars that didnt get refill had quite amount of gameplay (necro, warrior, assassin...), in fact my main didnt get third refill yet.

It woudl actually make sense - hardcores with tons of gameplay time dont really need those freebies, but casuals with little gameplay time greatly benefit from them (assuming they learn about em) Grima.worm@seznam.cz 14:06, 12 March 2007 (CDT)

I'd disagree with this theory, I've opened them 3 times now with my primary play character.--— xis10al Xis10al sig icon.jpg 18:49, 12 March 2007 (CDT)

Same, if anything I would say its the opposite, my most used char (my monk) has been able to open them 3 times, all other chars are still at 2 except my Elementalist and Warrior. Those 2 chars are the 2nd and 3rd most used chars of mine. --Saranis User-Saranis Green Dot.jpg (talk | contribs) 16:15, 14 March 2007 (CDT)

I dont think in-game time has much, if anything to do with it. Unless its based off the total time you have been on that character. After the 2nd opening(first reset) on my warrior, I barely played GW at all, at most I would do some UW runs on my ele. I was able to open them yet again on my warrior, though he wasnt played for more then an hour in an entire month. --Mwpeck 20:58, 16 March 2007 (CDT)

I still can't open the chests a third time and it's been a month with all my characters.....but I have only finished Nightfall's story with 1 character. Is it possible that the number of times you finish the storyline with different characters has some impact? Someday I will finish the storyline with a second character and see if the chests magically open then because it's been more than 30 days already. --RedFeather 10:21, 18 March 2007 (CDT)

I dont think that the amount of times you have finished NF has anything to do with it. When my Elementalist finished it the chests remained locked for all chars and are still locked to this day. My elementalist has been able to open the chests a third time but she was able to do so before completing the campaign. --Saranis User-Saranis Green Dot.jpg (talk | contribs) 23:32, 18 March 2007 (CDT)
I first opened all Treasures with my Tyrian Warrior, then systematically opened them all with my other nine chars (mixed continents) as and when I got to the appropriate stage of the game. After the first Reset I opened all Treasure again with all 10 chars within the space of 1 full weekend (Not sure of timing, wasn't logging open dates). Since the 2nd reset I've been using my Warrior to check the Treasure sporadically during the last month - they've all appeared empty each time. I then heard they maybe set to reset every month, so I tried again with my Warrior to no avail. After continuing to hear that others had opened a 3rd time, I took another of my chracaters to test, and it had been reset for that character (Canthan Assassin), it had also been reset for the other 8 remaining characters (Canthan, Tyrian, Elonian mix). My Warrior, who opened the chests the first two times first still hasn't had a 3rd reset. I'm therefor putting it forward that the treasures will reset every XX amount of days if you "Do Not Touch" them... I've logged the opens on my chars after the 2nd reset and will test my theory when I come to open them the 4th time. Genesis 13:33, 20 March 2007 (CDT)
Backing this one up. I had the exact same phenomenon: I used my warrior to test at least once a day to see if the chests were unlocked, and for a week, had no success. Tried with ranger, it worked. Tried with paragon, it worked. Craw 08:26, 27 March 2007 (CDT)
'Do Not Touch' them thingie makes sense (for me, at least). I've been checking with two characters periodically and neither one got a chest reset in far more than a month. A character who opened chests AFTER these two got his reset in like 40 days (did not manage to check sooner). 89.20.107.202 06:53, 27 March 2007 (CDT) Forgot to sign fR0z3n.S0u1 06:54, 27 March 2007 (CDT)
Ok, it's been a Calendar Month, I last opened/attempted to open all chests across 10 characters. My Warrior has checked the chests, periodically, usually once a week, he still hasn't had a reset. SO that's 2 months without a rest, and he's been checking constantly. Next is my Ranger, exactly a month later April 15 (last opened March 15), they are reset, he hasn't checked them periodically. I'm in the middle of the opening and logging process right now, so I'll have more data soon. I'm also going to test another theory, but this is about the quality of the loot, My Ranger's drops were all Purple, and the Gold quantity has been quite low... I think I'll leave 3 of my chars off the checklist for +1 week each (wait 1 week on 1, 2 weeks on the 2nd, 3 weeks on the third). I'm thinking maybe the longer you "Do Not Touch" the Treasure the higher the quality of drop and loot. The name of the "Do Not Touch", may well be a hint at the formula from ANet. More soon. Genesis 08:38, 15 April 2007 (CDT)

Well, this all looks nice...but can anyone explain to me why my ele can't open ANY of the treasures since november (meaning that's 4 months now) and they DO refill for all my other chars, from whom some haven't even completed NF... that sucks you know

My Treasure Chests Were Not Reset on 3/16/07[edit source]

I did not have my chest reset on March 16th! Did anyone else have theirs reset? My experiences still agree with Genesis! Jack Bourbon Scotch 18:06, 24 March 2007 (CDT)

Agreed, there seems to be no 'server' wide reset on chests from march 16th, i am still encountering some empty chests - please remove note from article that suggests this MissyP 20:10, 24 March 2007 (CDT)

I think the confusion is that after the treasure was introduced, a patch roughly a month later was assumed to have reset them the first time folks noticed they were reset. Now we know know that there's a secret per-character reset formula with a cycle around 30 days (varies a bit according to unknown variables). If you check the patch dates, the pattern is pretty clear - patches on the 20th, 16th, and 19th were thought to have reset the treasures, which were introduced in the Dec. 20th patch. The patch timing is probably mere coincidence, and the resets have all been according to the formula. — HarshLanguage HarshLanguage 03:54, 25 March 2007 (CDT)
Ah, I forgot to mention that I have no proof that the patches didn't reset the chests, so I'm not 100% comfortable simply removing the patch list from the Notes. — HarshLanguage HarshLanguage 03:56, 25 March 2007 (CDT)

But we DO have proof, because we have two players (myself included) who did NOT get the reset, meaning that either we both are experiencing a bug or there simply is no patch-reset, the latter which seems highly likely to me.

I edited the note with a reference back to the appropriate section of the Talk page explaining that the Treasures do reset, but that the exact interval or conditions at this time are unknown. Glamtre 01:39, 28 March 2007 (CDT)

I think the resets only occur after a MAJOR update. Like that last skills balance. The chests were reset then. --BeeD 22:26, 28 March 2007 (CDT)

I did neither get chest reset, whenever i try to open a treasure it says its empty. in this case its my main char (ranger) which have opened all the chests once, it was in late january i think. I have not opened any chest with any other character. Astroxslurg 20:27, 30 March 2007 (CDT)

Not 30 day resets[edit source]

My necro, Elonian born, who has beat NF has opened all the chests except for the last in the RoT, opened all the chests when they were reset in the patch, and has not been able to open them since. My Ranger, Tyrian born, who is only to the rescue koss quest opened the 2 kourna quests long after my necro and just reopened them today. It does go along with the "time charcter has been played" theory because i've been playing my ranger a lot more. Eric368 18:26, 1 April 2007 (CDT)

I believe it involves a random generator[edit source]

I believe the formula looks something like this: N(Number of drop) x C(number of Characters) x (Random number) = reset time Just a theory however. Readem (talk*contribs) 00:16, 8 April 2007 (CDT)

More Data[edit source]

I keep a log of my treasure chests, so I know when to go back on my account and my husband's account. Perhaps these data will prove useful to others.

  • Account#1-Tyrian-Monk (Playtime: Medium) - Opened 2 chests March 7 and 2 different chests on March 16; none of the 4 had reset by April 8
  • Account#1-Elonian-Mesmer (Playtime: Zero) - Opened 4 chests March 7 but no others; was able to open the same 4 chests April 8
  • Account#1-Factions-Ritualist (Playtime: Medium) - Opened ALL chests March 7; was able to open all chests again April 8; 4 in round 2 were purple
  • Account#2-Elonian-Monk (Playtime: Zero) - Opened 4 chests March 7 but no others; was able to open the same 4 chests April 8
  • Account#2-Tyrian-Elem (Playtime: Medium) - Opened 2 chests March 7 and 2 different chests on March 16; none of the 4 had reset by April 8

I have other characters in various stages of reset - since my data, at least, seem to indicate the chests reset based on the last time that specific character opened ANY chest (not just that specific chest), I think I will wait on the others before testing again. Nynn 17:41, 8 April 2007 (CDT)

I can definitely confirm this. I've been keeping records on which treasures I opened at what time on which characters since the start of April. And when I did another treasure run today to open those treasures that were 'supposedly' reset, I found that I could indeed open them on all of my characters except for my monk and my ele. The only difference between these 2 and the rest of my characters was that they opened 1 or 2 additional treasures (which they couldn't previously get to) during the month of the reset. Liselle Morrow 09:38, 9 May 2007 (CDT)
Between this and other comments on the page, I'd say 30 days from the last attempt to open a treasure on that character sounds most likely. Nynn, for the two characters that none of them worked on April 8, could you try the chests again on one of them on April 17, and, assuming that doesn't work, on the other on May 9? Until then, I would recommend everyone make sure to get the chests all on the same day and not try them again until at least 30 days have passed. Even if there are other variables at play, we at least know they won't reset any faster than 30 days, so it's not losing anything. 68.44.134.157 17:06, 11 April 2007 (CDT)
I will do just that, that sounds like exactly the way to test it - that will answer Ieldra's question below, as well. :) Nynn 21:03, 12 April 2007 (CDT)
Sorry for the delay, the Wiki was having editing problems the night of the 17th, and I quite forgot to try again! I tested Account#1-Tyrian-Monk again on the 17th, and she is still not able to open any chests. I'll try Account#2-Tyrian-Elem on May 9th, but for now, it does look very much as if, on a per-character basis, clicking on any chest, even empty ones, resets the timer, at least after the first set. Nynn 22:50, 21 April 2007 (CDT)

I wanted to come back and add even more info to my original set. At this point I'm tracking a total of nine characters' treasures, and so far every single one has supported this working theory. I did want to note one anomaly regarding treasure type, however. My ritualist received all golds the first time through, mostly golds and a few purples in round two, and all purples in round three. I assumed this would hold true for all of my characters. However, my dervish - who has done only the first four treasures, ever - has received all golds, each time, including this third and last round which I thought ought to be purple. I am now curious whether the system is tracking total number of chests opened before it downgrades drops to purples, meaning that, since said dervish has only opened 12 total (4 chests three times each) that'd be like my ritualist opening 12 chests once each. Next month when it's my dervish's time again, I'll note whether she gets any purples. -Nynn 21:48, 3 June 2007 (CDT)

Just adding still more data - my rit (who had been receiving all purples) waited more than 2 months before trying them again this round, and still all purples (well: 10 purples and 2 diamonds, hehe). That sorta debunked the theory that waiting double-time would bring back the golds. I suspect nothing will. I also suspect that it might be better to get 12 purps monthly (and a chance at jewels) than keep waiting longer and longer periods before trying again. -Nynn 14:37, 16 July 2007 (CDT)

2 Months[edit source]

Working theory so far[edit source]

I've attempted to validate some of the theories presented above. Here are the results: In order to claim all of my treasure with each character, I have waited the entire month (32 days just to be sure) before attempting to open any chests. Previously, I was using my primary character to check for resets, but I have concluded that if you attempt to open any chest within the month following the last open without waiting the full month, the timer resets for an additional month (30 or 31 days not sure exactly) for that character only. Therefore, write down the exact dates you last attempted or opened a chest and wait the full month before trying again. I do not know if the time is the same for EACH chest or ALL chests meaning if you open 2 on one day and 10 on the next if you have to wait the month after the 10 or if you can open the first 2 after a month passed on those.

NOTE: The openings of chests were not all done on the same day, so the theory is character specific.

I'd bet my Iceberaker that this is the case. It matches the pattern I've seen where I attempted to use my war to open chests, once a week, and couldn't for almost two months. Then I waited a month without making any attempts, and was able to open all chests, zero problem. 67.70.29.26 10:34, 24 April 2007 (CDT)
I was suspecting this was true too, because a friend of mine randomly checks chests if we are in the area and they are always empty for him. - BeXor Bexor.png 01:27, 25 April 2007 (CDT)
Intuitively, this seems to fit my experience of opening open chests. Foo 04:46, 25 April 2007 (CDT)
Yep, I think this is the most likely theory. And as for the example above, if you opened 2 chests on day 1 and 10 chests on day 2, then you would need to wait until day 32 before you could open any of the 12 chests again, even the first 2 you opened on day 1. Liselle Morrow 09:43, 9 May 2007 (CDT)
No, I did a (third or fourth) round with my paragon. Ones I specifically remember touching when I was helping people weren't reset. The rest were (but I got all purples - so lame). I touched them all on that same day so they ought to reset together again after 30-31 days. If I could find where I wrote down the date. - BeXor Bexor.png 10:11, 9 May 2007 (CDT)

Hard mode[edit source]

Does anyone have check if you can open the treasure in hard mode and in normal mode in the same month? --Crigore 09:34, 20 April 2007 (CDT)

I have the same question!--Agracul 07:49, 21 April 2007 (CDT)

I just tested it on the Jahai Bluffs chest. I went in on normal mode, and still couldnt open it (no surprise there). Then I went to the chest in hard mode, and was not able to open it. So it looks like if you open the chest on normal mode, it counts as opening it on both. --Archmage 11:05, 21 April 2007 (CDT)

On a related note, I opened the treasure chest in the Sulfurous Wastes in hard mode last night, and it dropped the normal amount - about 2 platinum, plus a gold axe (max stats, req 9, fiery, perfect defense mod, +15% damage/-10 armor while attacking inscription). I don't think hard mode gives better treasure. --KaliMagdalene 17:54, 22 April 2007 (CDT)

Purples in hard mode. - BeXor Bexor.png 03:46, 29 April 2007 (CDT)
Yeah, I've gotten a few purples as well. And while the treasure chest drops from the Istani regions are better than in normal mode, they're sometimes just under maximum base stats.AOTT 11:55, 29 April 2007 (CDT)
I opened the buried treasure in Mirror of Lyss (hard mode) and was dropped a diamond.--RNFR 13:21, 27 May 2007 (CDT)

I opened several treasures in normal mode and the same day I was able to open the same ones in hard mode. So I think they work as independent treasures in normal and hard mode.

A Theory I have[edit source]

Could the reset time be related to how old your account is? I mean, the older accounts wouldnt have as much need for this money as new accounts would. Anyone have any thoughts or varrifications on this? --Archmage 11:08, 21 April 2007 (CDT)

My account is almost two years old, and I have never been disappointed with the amount of gold I've received. It's always been within range when comparing to the drop rate tables. -- Dashface Dashface.png 03:12, 24 April 2007 (CDT)
I don't think anet would reduce the amount of gold given to its longest playing members imo... --Spider osiris 13:43, 25 April 2007 (CDT)
I agree. Who says older accounts don't need more money? Not all long-time players have been farming all this while and maxed out their storage capacity you know. --Ab.Er.Rant Necromancer (msg Aberrant80) 04:06, 26 April 2007 (CDT)
Older accounts = more characters at max level. :P - BeXor Bexor.png 07:59, 26 April 2007 (CDT)
I doubt that. I have an older account and only 3 of my characters is level 20. I just don't play the other characters as much. I know newer account owners that have more level 20's than this by far. --VallenIconwhitesmall.JPG Vallen Frostweaver 13:22, 26 April 2007 (CDT)
I mean that an account that is a month old is likely to have fewer higher level characters than one that is 2 years old. - BeXor Bexor.png 01:14, 27 April 2007 (CDT)

Clean up?[edit source]

Could someone clean up and summarize the findings into an easy to read format instead of the haphazard forum like clutter the discussion is in now. We need to know what is fact and what is speculation on how they refill etc.

I can confirm that the chests DO, in fact, refill. I can also confirm that it's about a month between refills (give or take a week.) In Hard Mode, the gold dropped is the same as Normal Mode. The item quality is a subjective matter. There's the gist of the entire discussion.AOTT 15:22, 8 May 2007 (CDT)

I've been playing on one character exclusively since HM came out. Tried opening the Mirror of Lyss chest an hour ago on a different character and still got nothing. --24.179.151.252 00:46, 23 May 2007 (CDT)

Checklist[edit source]

I'm not seeing the purpose of the checklist, especially since it has a column for each profession. --Fyren 18:22, 10 May 2007 (CDT)

The person who made that probably assumed that you won't have more then one RPG char per profession... which is correct imho. Still, a small remake to support character names would be nicer, if the table is needed for anyone at all. A place to write the date of the last opening is also something essential. — Poki#3 My Talk Page :o, 19:03, 10 May 2007 (CDT)
I think I would rather have it as a "See also" link. Personally I have at least three of each profession, apart from assassin and ritualist, so your humble opinion can be wrong. ;) I think a space for character names or initials would be handier. - BeXor Bexor.png 03:42, 11 May 2007 (CDT)
I don't see the logic of having more than one of each primary character profession; we can change the secondary at will and it's so easy to get skills that there's no reason to make duplicates. But I suppose initials would work as well...AOTT 14:46, 11 May 2007 (CDT)
I like buying armor sets to look at, and picking the nicest faces and hair for each gender/campaign. :) - BeXor Bexor.png 22:44, 11 May 2007 (CDT)

Can we get rid of this tacky checklist already? The consensus seems to be that it could be made better, and I don't really think it's necessary at all. If players want to make a checklist, then they can do it on their own with the criteria they deem most notable- we don't need to post one, especially for something trivial like this. Keep the link to it, but let's get rid of this eyesore.Ninjatek 11:31, 1 June 2007 (CDT)

I just saw it for the first time now. I like it. Please dont remove it for the next 4 hours, so I can get home and print it out lol. After that go ahead lol.

If anyone's interested in an example, I've just made a very simple 'checklist': User:IAmAI/TreasureLog --IAmAI 14:04, 17 July 2007 (CDT)

The entire checklist had been created on its own page by the same user who added it here. I removed it from here, just follow the link to find the checklist. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 10:24, 22 August 2007 (CDT)

Bug?[edit source]

Today I opened the "Do not touch" treasure in Bahdok Caverns in NM, but no djinn spawned. I think the bug effects not only HM, but NM as well.

I had that happen to me a couple of weeks ago as well, and it was in normal mode. RossMM 19:07, 14 May 2007 (CDT)

Anet controls[edit source]

I am under the impression now, that Anet just randomly resets the chests for events ect. There is no formula, and it doesn't appear that it has to do with the age of the character. Just and observation however. Readem (talk*contribs) 19:13, 13 May 2007 (CDT)

--That doesn't seem to be the case as the resets seem to be character specific rather than effecting every player/account at the same time. For example, I opened all chests on characters X and Y in a single day. One month+ a few days later character X was able to open them again but character Y was unable to. Still waiting for character Y to reset. --annon.

-- I think it's random, I just tried to open the two istani ones with a character who has waited almost 2 months since he last opened them and found nothing -- N.

Might be a limit..[edit source]

I keep a check list for all 9 of my characters, and today was time to get the treasures for the 3rd time. This time it was exactly 1 month from opening, and I did not receive anything on the treasures. I think there might be a limit of 3 times per character, however I still need more testing, I will wait a few more days and test then. --Kendo Bo Master 13:30, 16 May 2007 (CDT)

I've opened them 4+ times on several characters now, so I don't think there's a limit, just a limit to your patience in terms of the diminishing rewards. :D -Nynn 13:59, 13 August 2007 (CDT)
I have opened the Jahai Bluffs chest three times with my necromancer; I'll have to wait until June 3rd or so to see if I can do it again.AOTT 13:26, 20 May 2007 (CDT)

maybe you should have waited an extra day... 1 month could be 31 days for them, rather then just the X day of the month that you opened it to the X day of the next month--Archmage 16:47, 22 May 2007 (CDT)

I waited more than 31 days from the last time I touched treasure on any character, and I am able to open treasures again. However, characters that have already opened treasures 3-4 times are getting 50-60% as much gold, and almost exclusively purple drops.--Carmine 13:42, 29 May 2007 (CDT)
Opening them for the 3rd time, getting about 80% purple drops, and 50% of gold. --Rollerzerris.jpg <!--Zerris--> 18:11, 29 May 2007 (CDT)
Still better then me. I usually get 100% items, not 130% xD — Poki#3 My Talk Page :o, 18:21, 29 May 2007 (CDT)
50% of gold, meaning I used to get 3 plat in Torment but now I only get 1.5 plat, silly. :p --Rollerzerris.jpg <!--Zerris--> 18:33, 29 May 2007 (CDT)

I dont think theres a limit to how many times you can open the chests, but I honestly believe theres a scaling of loot. I think the more times you open a chest, the worse the loot becomes. After opening all these thigns month after month as differetn characters, ive noticed the amount of gold go from 2K+ and usual golds to like, 500 gold or less, and all purples, making the chests no longer worth my time. Drops[edit source]

Could just be dumb luck, but I'd say drops are not a standered randomization. From what I've seen Shield of the Lion and Portal Staff both seem unusually common, and swords/axes are comparitively rare. --Rollerzerris.jpg <!--Zerris--> 14:37, 28 May 2007 (CDT)

I think I figured out the caster stuff... it drops almost all primary attribute things. Very strange. --Rollerzerris.jpg <!--Zerris--> 16:34, 28 May 2007 (CDT)
Isn't it obvious that staves and shields will drop more than swords and axes? -Buzzer 07:22, 29 May 2007 (CDT)
Swords and axes drop more from foes, suggesting that the randomization is indeed not standard.--Carmine 13:36, 29 May 2007 (CDT)
That's because all foes can drop warrior gear but some are restricted from dropping things of another profession--Buzzer 01:32, 4 June 2007 (CDT)
Actually, my more important note was that Treasures seem to be severely biased towards primary attributes where possible, as well as certain weapon skins. --Rollerzerris.jpg <!--Zerris--> 01:42, 4 June 2007 (CDT)

Low End Treasures[edit source]

I only had 500g-1K and only 2 golds , no gems i think that being rich affects the treasure's contents to go down and if not minimum game-play time.

The amount of money you have has nothing to do with drops. Two of my guildies and myself all have extreme variations of "wealth" and we all get the same valued drops. - BeXor Bexor.png 04:32, 3 June 2007 (CDT)
I got a purple drop on the first time I opened the buried treasure in the Ruptured Heart with my Ranger! Not cool!-AOTT 13:49, 6 June 2007 (CDT)
I just went back to all the treasure areas, this would be my4th time through them, and i didn't get a single gold. I did them with my other charas, who havent done them b4, and got all golds. Also, i got less money with the guy who'd done it b4. Do you think you get less the more you do it? -Kumdori 15:44, 17 July 2007 (CDT)
I too just did a run and through all 12 i got 8410 gold and all purple drops this too would be my 4th time through it. im going to do a run with other chars and see how it goes. -Neozero Kastan

My monk got a little more money than my paragon (native and started the day of launch paragon) and 3 golds of 12, the rest was purple. My paragon got all purple and about 8.4k agains my monk who got about 9k. Not nice, other char who didn't did it before got all gold and normal amounts of money.

Just finished a run, after waiting 35 days: Jahal Bluffs: 252gp Arkjok Ward: 248gp Mehtani Keys: 128gp Issnur Isles: 122gp. This was this characters 4th run; I have 2 accounts with 10 characters on each that do runs, and I'm seeing a steady decline.. I suspect it is total treasures per account related, but I'll have to run a brand new guy to verify. I'll post when I do. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Blackdog (contribs) .

It had been 9 days since any character on that account had touched anything, and even my first drop in Domain of Pain was only about 1800.. that was also my only gold drop.--Blackdog 11:47, 7 June 2007 (CDT)
I just opened all the chests again. Lots of junk....many purples, and Torment chests were only dropping about 1.5k gold. In the end, I got about 12k from the gold rather than the usual 20k+ =/ P A R A S I T I C 16:54, 9 June 2007 (CDT)
I ran another char. 6 days since last chest touched, 41 days since that char had touched anything, character's 4th pull- all items were purple, and total sum from all chests was only 8,401gp- the last 5 were under 300gp each. Then I ran a brand new char to the first chest - gold drop and 528gp. So I believe characters just have a limit.--Blackdog 11:26, 14 June 2007 (CDT)
I too ran a character for the 4th time and got almost the exact same results as blackdog, all purps and 8410 gold. it obviously decreases item rarity and gold amount with each run. Neozero Kastan

I also wait a few days after the month is up. If you click on it before the full month is up the timer on all of them go to zero. Even though it was a month later, you still might have been off an actually month by a couple of hours. --91.105.24.72 04:17, 23 June 2007 (CDT)

Possible Addition: A Way to Check the Time[edit source]

I recently opened the Istani, Kournan, and Vabbian chests and, to my dismay, received only about 1/2 the gold and purple items every time. Perhaps this 1/2 the amount of gold is a marker for someone opening the chests too early? If so, I believe it bears mentioning. I do have screenshots, and if you'd like them I'd be happy to post them, though I'm new to the Wiki boards so you'll have to be patient with my figuring out how.

I am having the same experience. It has been three months since the last time I touched any of the chests, with any of my characters, but then again this is the third time for most of them. I suspect that there is a degree of diminishing returns for all characters, no matter how long you wait. Or perhaps it just takes progressively longer each time. Auntmousie 15:37, 5 September 2007 (CDT)
Update: I know anecdotal evidence doesn't constitute proof, but my Legendary Defender, after the same interval as the other characters, is getting gold drops and full value on the first few chests. This would seem consistent with the idea that you get progressively worse returns from the chests after multiple uses. Auntmousie 19:31, 5 September 2007 (CDT)

Change to text when empty?[edit source]

I was farming skree wings in the Forum Highlands and ventured near the Do Not Touch there....I checked it and got the message "A magical force prevents you from touching the treasure." instead of getting the loot or getting "The chest is empty."...I believe they changed the empty message and just wanted to confirm it with someone who had checked a treasure recently.--Thor79User-thor79.pngTalk 01:14, 1 September 2007 (CDT)

no treasure[edit source]

I tried to access the Kournan Chests today, for the first time (AFAIK) with my prophecies monk and the chests were empty. I have a friend with a similar problem. Maybe ANET is discontinuing them? Vidnuev 12:35, 14 September 2007 (CDT)

It's clearly been more than a month since the last time that I opened the chest in Sulfurous Wastes, which happens to be on my farming route. Still nothing, getting the "the chest is empty" message. However, I have gotten items from that chest at least twice in the past, so at one point or another the chests did reset. Blazeroth

I can get to all the chests in Istan, Korna and Vabbi. The last time I got treasure was the first week of April, just over 5 months ago. I check them all every 2 weeks or so, and as of today - still empty. -Lefick 09/17/07
Please read the discussion above. Your findings only serve to yet further support the theory that has strong evidence and as of yet has very little counter-evidence: treasures are reset 31 days after ANY character on your account touches ANY treasure. Touch them every two weeks, empty or not, and they'll never reset. --Carmine 02:00, 18 September 2007 (CDT)
Shortly after I made my previous post, I gained access to the buried treasure in the Sulferous Wastes within the Desolation. It might be worth noting that while I did get a treasure from that location, a quick check of several other locations showed that gaining access to a new location will not reset old locations. I will set a calandar reminder to check again in 5 weeks to see if they do reset after being left alone for over a month. -Lefick Sept 19, 2007

Definate Relationship between Time and Value of Items[edit source]

3 of us went on a treasure chest run. 2 of us had done it 1.5 or so months previously, the other hadn't done it for 3 months.

Me and 2. received only purples even at the Do No Touch chests with maybe 500 gold pieces. Mr. 3 received recieved gold items and platinums in EVERY chest.

One example was the Ruptured Heart Chest. I recieved 500 gold, a purple. Mr 2 recieved 900g and a purple. Mr. 3 received 2000 and a gold. This patten didn't change the entire run. Either pure luck or coding... you choose.

Soraya 12:51, 25 September 2007

I'm inclined to say it does have some sort of relationship, though it will obviously take a long time to determine exactly what it is. Would need some larger test samples than just 3 chars... Entropy Sig.jpg (T/C) 21:57, 24 September 2007 (CDT)

Although I think his does have some relationship, I also have the feeling that doing a run with another character just after the other will result in more purples...something like an anti farm code or something82.169.126.187 15:12, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

This article is still wrong[edit source]

The article as it stands is wrong. I have used 4 characters within the last month to open chests. My ele went through with mostly gold, 3-4 purples for results. My monk went through with same results. I tried my necro, and got the whole all purple, crap gold--despite it being 4 months since doing a run with her. Then I tried my paragon that has never beaten the game, she gets gold items, and tons of gold--totally disproving the whole "same account/half drops" idea. Now the fascinating thing with my paragon is that it has been LESS than 3 weeks since i did some of the latter chests, ie forum highlands, yet they reset within 3 weeks, and I even got a diamond and lots of gold. I do seem to be getting purples on the early chest though, like Issnur, Mehtani, and Arkjok. There is a bigger formula at work somehow, especially since my warrior has not reset in over 6 months, yet I can run my para through twice within 3 weeks. 12:47, 3 November 2007 Update: I just tried my mesmer in mirror of Lyss, and she popped a Gold req 9 Ruby Maul on the same chest that my para popped a gold item. 13:00, 3 November 2007

It depends on how many times you opened the chests. The first time always yields golds, and the 2nd has a chance for purples, 3rd has a few purples, 4th probably has lots of purples. Same with gold, dimnishing --VipermagiSig.JPG -- (s)talkpage 18:01, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
I support this idea. I have been keeping records for all of my characters. It does seem that the game tracks how many times you've gotten loot and reduces the reward and (possibly) increases the reset interval depending on how many pulls you've done. 75.128.39.35 00:59, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
I do too, but I think it tracks per character, not over the whole account. My necro (who's my only char beaten NF) gets purple every time, but my other chars I'm starting to take through (who haven't accessed the chests as much) get golds still, especially newer ones like my ranger. Mesodreth Blackwing 06:47, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

My monk just finished the game last week, so I went to check some chests that she had NEVER gone to before: 1 Dasha---she didnt have magrid so never went there, no only did she only get a purple but also less than 1 plat. 2 Today she was capping her last skill in the domain of pain---again she had NEVER opened that chest---she got a purple rune and 1plat 323 gold....before these the last time she had visited ANY treasures was back in AUGUST --more than a 30 day wait. Just to try something out, I went with my paragon into lyss (she had not been there before either having just arrived in kodash) and she got a gold and 2plat +. What does this game have against my poor (really poor now) monk? I have also taken my ranger to new treasures this week (she was still in kourma and just finished mordak) and she also got a gold and decent plat. Cosyfiep 06:21, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

What works for me...[edit source]

This is way to confusing, I never had problems opening treasures. This is what I do: I open ALL of them, wait one month, and start over. Never a problem, and is character independent. What is very important is that ALL were open or it doesnt reset (Am Bups)

I believe much of the confusion comes from a "reliable source" saying that the treasure chests were just for the holidays last year (12/2006) when they were added. This proved to not be the case. I have run half the treasures (all torment, desolation, and vabbi), waited a month, and had them reset (the idea being that those are worth more, and the belief being that you get X number of treasures before the quality degrades). I think there is something else at play (it has been suggested that beating NF resets the 1 month timer), or people are tagging treasures too early on accident. It could be anything, but not everyone is getting the same "typical" results you are seeing. I agree with you on this- it is definitely character based (as opposed to account). --Blackdog 02:05, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

Less gold and no rare items[edit source]

Hmz, i just went with a guildy running by all chests. I only got purple items, and the max of gold i got was 764g from the last chest in nightfallen jahai or something. My guildy got all rare items and normal gold values up to 3,6k at the nightfallen jahai chest. I think this is about my 3rd of 4th run since i found them out. Is this normal ? I now go on my monk who done it about 2 runs less.

Bad luck? -- only purples[edit source]

Having not made it through NF much before I took a 6 month break, I recently finished NF and decided to run for all the remaining chests. I'd gone to the Istan and Kournan ones previously a few times. So earlier this month (4/2~4/7) I started with the ones I'd done before. Purples, which was expecting. I then hit up Hidden City of Ahdashim, Bahdok Caverns for the FIRST time on this char (and on this account). I think I got one gold item. In the past 3 days, I hit up Sulfurous Wastes, Ruptured Heart, Nightfallen Jahai and Domain of Pain for the FIRST times as well. I got 4 purples and 780-1083g from each. I assume nobody else around here has never done them, but maybe the drops have just gotten crappier in general? I'm disappointed. 71.146.82.68 20:34, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Same for me.. really disappointed.. :( — Corsaire Corsaire Signature.gif 19:51, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
I have been keeping track of the chests for some time now. Over the course of using 20 different characters across two accounts, here are my observations:
  • It appears the 30 day timer is fairly accurate. It also appears that attempting to open a treasure prior to the 30 time extends the time - i.e. I had to wait more than 30 days for one character after getting empty chests. Therefore, checking an empty chest seems to add 30 additional days to the time - i.e. if you have 5 days before reset but check anyway, the treasure will not reset for 35 days hence. And having a character complete a campaign may or may not also affect the timer/reset time - I haven't seen enough evidence yet either way to prove or disprove this fact. However, with my runs, all characters are done within 2-3 days of each other, with a campaign completion within another day of that, and have seem to have gotten more resets than runs attempted prior to finishing campaigns.
  • I have also noticed these diminishing returns as well, and it appears that the more runs a character does, even when following the timer rule, the less return for the investment so to speak. The six characters who have done the most runs have had the least amount of value, while characters doing the runs for the second time still had high value drops. This appears to begin with the third chest run. For my characters on their third, they still get gold drops, but beginning with the Mehtani Keys treasure (when runs start with Issnur and end in Bahdok) the amount of gold receive lessens - i.e. Issnur provides 500 gp or more, Mehtani provides @490 gp, and the Kourna treasures average around 980-990 gp. This is regardless of time between resets - my current runs are 90+ days after the last runs. Starting around the fourth or fifth runs the purple drops begin to show up and increase in frequency with each additional run thereafter.
  • Even when getting purple drops, they seem to be high value - all that I recall have been worth over 100 gp at the merchant, and when getting a purple item, the amount of gold dropped with it appears to be greater than a character in the same party who gets a gold item.
  • The order in which the treasures are run now does appear to matter. Starting at Bahdok and working backwards, or starting on Istan seems to generally yield the same amount of total gold received, but I have noticed that the yield from each treasure decreases relatively speaking with its location. For example, with my Istan-Bahdok run, the Issnur had the best return while Bahdok had the worst (a gold drop, but only 880 gp). My next run with two different characters going in the opposite direction yielded gold drops and just over a plat at Bahdok, but two purps for one and 445 gp on Istan, while the other got less gold but received gold drops.
  • In line with the above obsvation, treasures that have not been open yet also appear to be affected. My characters opening the MoL treasure for the first time have gotten less than ideal drops - even getting a purple on occassion, and doing the backwards run causes each subsequent chest to yield worse gp drops, but the item drops seem less affected - one or two gold items still pop up.

Therefore, I put forth the theory that the total number of chests opened has an effect upon the type of drops you will receive, and the number of times each individual chest is opened dramatically decreases the value of the drops of that particular chest. The base conclusion I have drawn from this is: Opening the chests on Istan WILL drop the value of all the other chests from that point on, and additionally decrease the value of the Istan chests even further. As an example, opening any one chest, regardless of location will decrease the value of all the other chests, whether previously opened or not (just for example, let's say 1%). So for each chest you open, the overall value of all chests drop by 1%; opening only the MoL treasure 5 times, decreases the value of all the other treasures by 5%. On top of that, it appears that each treasure is also affected by the number of times it is opened - let's say another 1%. Therefore, by opening the MoL treasure 5 times you have degraded all others by 5%, but have degraded the MoL treasure of 10%. This leads me to believe that to get the best returns possible, characters should not open any treasures until they can access all of them, and should run them in reverse order, thereby getting the best returns from the high end at a better ratio to the low end ones.HanokOdbrook 14:43, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

The more you open a chest, the worse the drops is a well known fact about the chests. And I agree on that. However, I strongly disagree with that it reduces other chests too. I barely ever open the chest in Bahdok Caverns. On my Ranger, I opened every chest, except those in the RoT and Bahdok Caverns, thrice. Then when I opened the Bahdok Caverns treasure, the loot was, actually, pretty good. Nothing less than regular/ --- Ohaider!-- (s)talkpage 14:50, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
My results support the findings of the earlier posters in this topic... I've done exactly the same thing. My first NF character did the Istani and Kournan chests regularly, until I started to see the diminishing returns. I left all the chests alone until after she cleared the whole game, and went back to check the chests in Vabbi, the Desolation and RoT that I'd never done -- still got purples and lower than average gold from them.  :\ I actually came over here hoping to find something like "Treasure values reset after a year!" but it seems like no one's said that... XD;;
I keep a spreadsheet so I can post data if need be, but yeah... sad. I used to take two of my other characters for treasure runs, but as soon as I saw what was happening to my Ranger's drops, I quit with them until they finish NF and I can sweep all the chests at once. Perhaps I'll do them in backwards order as suggested by HanokOdbrook. Esadha Kephal 14:48, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
Adding a bit more data. Did treasure runs regular since they were added on all my characters. 7/10 characters did do all chests from Issnur Isles to the last one. Run 1 and 2 on each character yielded about 20k and only gold drops. After that the drops decreased.
Character Class AND time since the last run seem to matter in any case:
Monk (Proph) got only purple drops and 4993g on 3rd run after a waiting time over 11 months with a very low ingame activeness.
Warrior (Proph) got only purple drops (+1 saphire) and 8631g after waiting time of 12 months +1 week with a high ingame activeness.
The run of the Warrior was done in reverse order, the Monk started at Issnur Isles. I collected the exact amount of gold dropped from each treasure should anyone be interested in more detailed data. AmokWammi 21:16, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
Professions and time doesn't matter. Later chests give better items / more gold. Rewards diminish the more you open them. Combine these two, and you'll see that you get more money by doing things in reverse order, and even more by opening only the chests in the Real of Torment (and possibly Do Not Touch's). And there's also the luck factor. — Poki#3 My Talk Page :o, 02:08, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Agreed. I just had a character who'd never opened any of the treasures get gold items and >2k gold from every one. But on a character that's opened them all at least twice each, some more, it's been a year since any of the treasures were touched and I'm getting purples and <300 gold. Waiting longer between opening the treasures doesn't make a difference to treasure value. Waiting only ensures they reset. Heh these treasures aren't a sustainable resource, we've already hit Peak Gold :P GW-Infinity 05:59, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

4month break on chests[edit source]

Have 9 toons and only open 10 of the 12 chests. waited 4 months between chest runs. Even on toons that i play often, chests yield min cash and purples drops. diminishing returns in the formula appears to last after each chest run, not going away as the chests sit unopened in their monthly cycles.

if you want to farm the chests once you start getting purples, wait long enough for the chests to reset and collect the min cash + purples. 4-6 weeks depending on amount of chests you opened last time vs amount of toons you have vs amount of experience you have gained over that time.

if you are are bored with chest runs, do them whenever you need cash. my next chest run window will be 6 months to see if i can get gold drops again. after that i'll let them sit for 12 months. however i expect purples and min cash to continue. it appears after you open the chests 4-5x, purple is all you will be getting.Palewook 13:21, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

-- I quit playing GW 6 months ago. But recently a friend asked me to start a new char with him, so today I logged on and ran the chests. After 6 months if inactivity on the account I still got purples and min cash. I'd say Palewook is right and no amount of time brings back the gold goodness. -- Myth 18 Dec 2008

(moved from main article)

[EDIT: I've waited over 6 months between opening treasures, and they were still purple. It looks like once they go purple, they never go back to being gold. Others in the guild report the same results.]. -User:71.231.123.120

gold item[edit source]

Forgive the noobiness of this question but... can it be any gold item, or are only certain common skins dropped? e.g. is it remotely possible to whip out a Voltaic Spear etc.? -->Suicidal Tendencie Suicidal Tendencie Sig.jpg 17:50, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

I believe it can drop any nightfall item, seeing as the spear is EotN only sadly i think it wont drop, but i will leave it for someone else to confirm it for you. Durga Dido 17:54, 17 January 2009 (UTC)
The skins I've always seen drop, all seem to correspond to the types of Mobs that spawn closest the treasures. For example, Istan Treasures are all Corsair items, and Vabbi's always drop Djinn class items. --ilrIlr d-small.png
Ah good, I feel better now that nobody showed up a second later explaining it with the air of someone telling me 1 + 1 = 2, although I do wonder if anybody knows for sure. The Spear was just an example. The Magmas Shield is in Nightfall, so according to your theory Durga, someone could get a bit (too) lucky. -->Suicidal Tendencie Suicidal Tendencie Sig.jpg 19:00, 19 January 2009 (UTC)
