Yeah, you should really templatize your archive box like we tried to tell the Naz to do. Just take the whole {archives} template and stick in its own subpage (mine is at User:Dr ishmael/ArchiveBox), then transclude that onto each talk archive. Lots more convenient. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 22:00, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
eh, I just haven't come around to it yet. --TalkpageEl_Nazgir 22:24, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

A thank you from the Committee to Reduce Unnecessary Drama[edit source]

re: this post on Scythe's page

Thank you for taking the time to let Scythe know the reputation he was steadily and (one suspects) unintentionally building. I have had similar thoughts on the topic before, but was unable to put them into words (or, at least, graciously present them). Well done.  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 16:28, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

I thought I was the sole member of that committee. Thanks, AFK, for this nice, and distanced vieuw. Seems like I'm thanking ppl a lot these days for things that, really, should be normal. Arnout aka The Emperors Angel 16:40, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
Thank you both; I hope to be more active on GuildWiki in the future. One thing which gets in the way of this aim is the concern what kind of reputation my past actions — which for once were at least helpful, giving me experience to use when forming my message — have resulted in me having today. First impressions 'n' all. The positive response to an edit I greatly considered not submitting has been appreciated more than you know.

As far as I understand his point of view (I've had quite a lot of discussion with him about it), he doesn't mind the mesmer, but in GW1, he believes it does not fit his play style, and for GW2, he does not believe they would be an interesting choice for the 8th profession. Please correct me if I'm wrong on anything AFK. --TalkpageEl_Nazgir 19:44, 13 November 2011 (UTC)
Oh. I see.--Necro Shea Mo 20:48, 13 November 2011 (UTC)
The Mesmer is a class the concept of which I am greatly interested in. Concept of. Implementation is another matter.
I have enjoyed playing Mesmers in Guild Wars, just not often. I'd say that when I play any profession, I enjoy playing Mesmers less frequently than any of them, with the exception of this one. Oops. I meant this.
The idea of a profession that exists primarily as a counter to others, is the idea of a profession where your effectiveness depends entirely on your skill and knowledge of the game. As someone who gets addicted to one game, aims to master it, and will play it for months if not years, this appeals to me greatly. Elementalists will have big numbers. Dervish will have lots of numbers. The Mesmer, in theory? Either you're worst nightmare... or a free kill. Depends 100% on the player. The Mesmer, in practise? Well, he has a bunch of irrelevant health degeneration skills for no obvious reason, and this far into power creep, is an armor ignoring Elementalist. Making the true Elementalist invalid. Nice one, guys.
See, I'm loving a lot of stuff in Guild Wars 2. An Elite Skill that turns you into a plague of undeath to roam around infecting the enemy while feeling distinctly badass? Sign me up. The Necromancer Scythe animations? Yes please. The Doom animation? I came.
...and that's just one profession. There's also the new combat system, a boatload of interesting and diverse mechanics, the "stick something on the ground and your allies can use it to make their skills more powerful" shiz and... yeah. Colour me impressed. Oh, and the graphics, etc. Christ, this game looks nice.
The two games at this stage I've played more than any other are Guild Wars and World of Warcraft. Now, so far, Blizzard Entertainment have been roundly more cool than ArenaNet in just about every way. GMs that are the nicest I have ever encountered (dealt with 3 thus far, personally). A CS team that's legendary among the MMORPG community for being incredibly cool to deal with. General style and badassery. Which I don't believe is a word. But maybe it is.
ArenaNet once banned me for 72 hours for a name. A name I had used for over a year. A name I had been logged into for thousands of hours. They came along after one person had a problem with it and said "that'll be a 3 day ban". A name change I have no problem with. But one person out of how many I've encountered having a problem with it? It cannot be that bad to deserve a ban. Can't be. [Sorry, this was my main experience with ArenaNet. Biased though I obviously am - nobody likes getting banned - it left a bad taste in my mouth.]
Blizzard don't ban over names. At least not unless it's something extreme that saying IRL would get you shot. Blizzard have GMs to help you out when shit happens. Blizzard take on a stance of "what can we do to help you?". ArenaNet... don't. Seriously. If you havn't dealt with Blizzard, you just don't know what you're missing. Let's say you delete a Voltaic Spear by accident. Contact ArenaNet. Good luck. Let's say you delete a WoW equivalent. File a ticket. A GM will come along (more likely than not, within 2 hours). He'll restore it and leave it in your mailbox. If he catches you online (if he doesn't, he'll wait for you) he'll let you know, just so you're aware it's been done. Then he'll chat to you for 10 minutes about your favourite class, what you're excited about in the next patch, stuff that's happened recently, etc.
Hold the phone, let's recap that. One company will shrug and do nothing. The other - for no discernible reason other than being cool and that they can - will bend over backwards to help you, make sure you enjoy the game, and clean up your mess for you? One says "you're a valued customer". It's not the approach of ArenaNet that says this, sadly.
I don't mean to suggest that deleting the best item ever is something I do every two weeks. (If I did, not even Bliz would help.) But let's be honest, if you play a game for years, then you'll fuck up at least once. The fact that a company cares enough about you (or your money, with service like that, I don't care which) to come along and save the day means a lot. Contrast that to ArenaNet's... no GMs. Sorry, they just don't compete. At all. Currently.
As I've said, Guild Wars 2 is looking nice. Incredibly nice. It would seem ArenaNet have come a long way. I'll be the first to say credit where credit's due, fair fucks to them. I honestly didn't think they had a single learning experience in any part of the power creep filled Guild Wars lifespan, but they proved me wrong. I'm big enough to say it; I was wrong.
As a company, they were a joke. They have come a long way. They proved me wrong. But let us, at long last, get back to the matter at hand. Can they implement the Mesmer profession well? Can they have a reasonably large assortment of ~balanced skills that all say "Mesmer"?
I don't mean zero. But I mean not many skills that say "costs 5 energy, enemy takes 50 damage". We're talking interrupts (they must exist in some fashion in GW2... right?). Empathy. Backfire. A less ridiculous version of Panic. Mesmer skills.
I love the concept of Mesmers. ArenaNet have grown tremendously over the last few years, and I'm proud of them for that.
Do I have much more faith in them now than I did before? Absolutely.
Do I believe that, at long last, they can nail the Mesmer? Skills balanced against themselves, and those of other professions? Skills that are relevant if you're fighting Jormag, That Guy in PvP, or 20 Krait?
Do I believe that they're up to the task?
...no. I wish I could say I do. I hope they prove me wrong. They've done it already. So maybe. But personally... I'm not sure I believe it's possible to really balance the Mesmer. It goes back to my favourite MMORPG expression; "good players are over-powered". In no instance would that shine through more than Mesmers. Which is a good thing and a bad thing, all at once.
My personal preferences are, from best case scenario to worst, this; Mesmer implemented well and relatively balanced > no Mesmers > the game never comes out > Mesmers implemented badly.
Mesmers will always be the one who never loved you back. You'll look at them... and you'll see the waste of a profession that spoilt the game. But it'll be worse than that.
You'll be thinking about what they could have been.
A masterpiece. User A F K When Needed Signature Icon.png A F K When Needed 05:28, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

Blizz is a significantly more rich company. They have the money to have a dozen GMs per server. ANet is a small company; one released game, and one under development taking up almost their entire staff. They don't have the staff nor the money for top-grade CS. Comparing it to the best customer service in my experience (Blizz might do stupid shit to Diablo III, but they know how to keep current customers happy) is hardly fair :/ Heck, you yourself say it's legendary. I won't deny ANet's customer service is well below Blizz's, but I think they have a pretty good reason for that too.
How it relates to mesmers is also beyond me :P --Vipermagi 17:32, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
Okay. But my main point is their "pretty good reason" is a result of a decision of theirs. One that I once agreed with, appreciated, constantly reminded my WoW-playing friends of... and which I now find myself questioning. Why? I'm not sure. I'd guess because I'm excited about GW2, and I see this as being one of the things that'll ruin it for me.
But the Scythe animations are still badass. <3 User A F K When Needed Signature Icon.png A F K When Needed 17:06, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

Name change[edit source]

I hear you about having a name over a year and then changing it, because some selfish/childish person didn't like it. There was a guy that came on the forums, just to basically and obviously "troll" about names and had a big fuss over it, including mine. I'm like this guy on drugs or what? Recent Wikia spam[edit source]

Thanks for attempting to get people's attention about this. I couldn't figure out why I was getting any email from Wikia at all (I thought I had opted out of it all); without your note, I would have had zero clue about what had happened.

<rant> I'm horrified by Sanse's response to "just use mail filter" or "blank your raw watch list." I'm guessing she had no idea how many people got email, how many of them haven't contributed to Wikia in over a year, and how few people want to manually setup a filter / blank the watchlist and then wait to undo that work later when Wikia claims they have fixed the issue. </rant>

As it turns out, with the new year, I was reconsidering my personal boycott of Wikia. In theory, a good reason for forcing sites to follow Wikia standards was being able to provide better support. In practice, that appears to have been a bad tradeoff (I think something like what happened today should have been easily caught by a half-way robust regression test).

Anyhow, thanks again for trying to get Wikia paid staff to realize how bad this was.  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 04:26, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

Links? I would like to be able to boycot wikia, but I can't. The Mass Effect wiki, and the Fallout series wiki, are in wikia hands. And both are really the only good online resources on either series. Arnout aka The Emperors Angel 11:00, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
@Arnout: I apologize that I somehow left the impression that I don't read Wikia sites anymore. My boycott is strictly about contributing my time: Wikia has failed repeatedly to make good on the implicit agreement between service provider (paid staff) and content provider (volunteer staff). In effect, I left due to poor working conditions. (In contrast, Curse mostly leaves the sites alone and (usually) when they need to impose something upon us, they take time to let us know — or at least, let the admins know.)
@Ariyen: that's an idea. IIRC, at the time, I was unable to remove an email address from preferences. But even if I could now, I'm loathe to recover my password strictly for the sake of dealing with their mistake. For the moment, my mail account is blocking anything from Wikia. (Not ideal, but ... I'm also loathe to spend more than a few minutes on this.)  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 03:11, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
You'd have been better off emailing me old friend, I oft go weeks without visiting this wiki now.
Also, it'd be more appropriate to thank RT (who posted the actual fix), but if you wish to thank me for criticizing and ranting at Wikia Staff, that's no problem.
I'll e-mail you when you can safely unblock Wikia. (See below) User A F K When Needed Signature Icon.png A F K When Needed 07:18, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
I think both of those suggestions (filter, black out raw watchlist) were mine, initially but anyway - Wikia messed up on this one and if you're not using it activly I'd block it for a week or so until they fix it. I didn't get this bug, so I'm all happy, but I have to deal with this stupid "message wall" freakture, so I'm less happy -- RandomTime 07:21, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
Also, Arnout - Fallout moved to Curse (in a drama-fuelled deal) -- RandomTime 07:23, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, RT. I was wondering why they weren't maintaining it. Both wiki's seem active, far more so than ours... (even slightly in favour of the wikia one). But I'll move to curse. Arnout aka The Emperors Angel 10:13, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
(EC'd by RT. Twice. On my talk page.)
The Nocturnal Ninja... you should be Batman's arch-enemy.
Anyhoo, on Wikia; it's claimed that the fix has been pushed live, but you'll need to manually unfollow (whoops, English) any walls you've edited since the bug was created.
So basically, they half-fixed it and called it a day. At half past eleven in the morning. Thanks for the fix..? User A F K When Needed Signature Icon.png A F K When Needed 07:26, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
TBH, there's not much they could've done, apart from go back through their logs and find out what everyone had been following and unfollowing and undoing that. Oh, and the unfollow button's broken on monobook - QQ -- RandomTime 07:28, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
There is much that they could have done to prevent this type of situation from occurring (and for not having made it so hard for people to control their preferences, e.g. editing what they watch reduced to editing the raw watchlist, which no longer has an obvious link). While I don't think it's acceptable that this specific bug got past their regression testing... once it did, I agree w/RT that there isn't much they could have done technically.
What I fault them for is their public response, which was, "oh, yah, my bad." Even Tiger Woods did a better job of apologizing. (Even Community Central still doesn't have a note from them, let alone an apology.)
I didn't realize RT was responsible for the specific workarounds. That means extra Kudos to Randomtime, but more demerits to Wikia — unless RT is getting paid (last I heard: not), RT's contributions count as volunteer work, which means the best that the staff offered its unpaid employees was to pass around someone else's suggestion.
I posted here (rather than emailing) because I wanted to publicly acknowledge AFK's contribution to the fight for Goodness and Truth. (Also, I'm not sure I would have quickly figured out that this was a bug without AFK admonishing Sanse for failure to communicate; AFK's posts on her wall were the first clue I had that this wasn't something I could easily have prevented.)  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 17:26, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
While it is always pleasant to be praised, I've never before felt so unworthy of praise. All I did was notice a problem and ask a member of staff what was up. Admittedly I deliberately did so in a public setting, but my "contribution" pales in comparison to that of RT. In my own modest little opinion, he's the only one who actually did something worth thanking, and sadly, as per usual his role is being understated (this is at Wikia and not TEF).
I realize that Wikia would look foolish broadcasting "our mess cleaned up by teenager, wooo" every five minutes [both are a likely scenario], however when a member of volunteer staff does clean up their mess, they deserve more than being totally and absolutely plagiarized. Even "a work around suggested by User:Randomtime, is..." at least acknowledges they're not responsible for it. The very worst possible consequence is them actually waking up and doing their job.
The best way to avoid looking foolish is to do your job properly. Not steal ideas from other people on the internet. Volunteer or otherwise. User A F K When Needed Signature Icon.png A F K When Needed 10:16, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

Meh, I use it quite frequently elsewhere. ^ ^ User A F K When Needed Signature Icon.png A F K When Needed 16:35, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

beta scam[edit source]

The difference is that this one is openly endorsed and linked from the official GW2 website, Twitter, and Facebook. As I remember, most of the warnings about "don't give out personal info to" / "don't run programs downloaded from" also have the caveat "unless it is official" (obviously paraphrased). —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 22:04, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

I kept telling him the same thing but he wouldn't believe me until he saw twitter also said to go there. --TalkpageEl_Nazgir 22:26, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
As someone who's only 20 (easily excited) and into computing (if probably bad regardless), I'm well aware of the possibility of someone else hosting content on the official domain, even if that is singularly unlikely. It's not that I thought about it and decided it was definitely a scam, I just went there and was told "k, download and run this .exe to get into the beta", and that's something I have - for a period of years - associated with immediately closing the tab and going about my business.
