Only needs to be one "last checked"

Thanks for going through the common misspellings! When you add your signature, please take out Merty's; we only need to know the most recent time stamp (the others are captured in the page's history).  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 01:36, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

bossing you around

"I guess you try to be boss of everything Mendel." This personal attack of yours was completely uncalled for. Please apologize. --◄mendel► 02:12, 29 May 2011 (UTC) [I don't want an apology any more. Text stricken. --◄mendel► 10:22, 29 May 2011 (UTC)]

It's not a personal attack. It's a form of expression. A metaphor. I don't need to apologize as it's not attacking you of any form or way, but I do hate it that you think that way. Ariyen 02:53, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
Since when is "boss around" NPA material? No, mendel, that's not a personal attack. And we all known how touchy and trigger-happy I am at calling things for NPA. ∵Scythe∵ 03:26, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
Bossing someone around is a pejorative phrase; it's offering a negative image of someone's personality. It does not address the validity of any point made by Mendel. It might not violate the text of any policy we have; it seems to me that it violates the spirit by suggesting that an argument is less compelling because of something about the person who made it.  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 04:06, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
Validity - it does not address? Um, when one tries to get a lot started and nothing completed and expects others to finish... is bossing others around imo. There's no need for specifics. If I must give examples, one of them is what he tried with the ip, like he expects it or me to go through all the armor pages and link them, etc. when the reality is - we all have lives. I don't much like for someone doing things like that and would rather them respect others in the fact that we all have lives and to make the writing as he had in an orderly fashion - is a big negative in the first place. I think as I have stated over there. If someone wants changes on those warrior armor pages, to make suggestions to the others to keep it consistent. Else leave it all alone, unless it all gets changed. The Warrior pages shouldn't be specially to be changed into links, when there are other pages that many users might expect to be changed as well. I'd rather see a discussion on it all, instead of do this do that, let's make this look more like a train wreck than it already does and not work at fixing it in a better way to have consistency, etc. So, attack? No, not when someone is actually showing that type attitude in their writings and need to be point blank told. Hence as man others have said, to look at how the words and the way it's worded might sound to another, before posting. Ariyen 04:30, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
TEF, I am sorry, my section header here created a wrong impression; Ariyen never said I was "bossing her around", she only said the quote that stands at the start of my first paragraph. I do agree that this is a personal comment because it is about my person, and not my subject matter (links on the wiki); it is also overly general because it refers to "everything" and not the matter at hand; and I am personally offended to be labelled as trying to be the boss in a situation where we all are equal - to me, trying to be the boss of equals without a clear community mandate is a negative character trait I do not like to be labelled with, and if others think so as well, that's an attack.
Ariyen, your quote was in reply to me writing, quoted in full: "Ariyen, if you see a word on a page that we have an article page for, you can link its first occurrence. It helps people find their way around the wiki more quickly." I do not see how that relates to "tries to get a lot started and nothing completed" or "expects it or me to go through all the armor pages". I do not see how "The Warrior pages shouldn't be specially to be changed into links" relates to the bossing.
My opinion is that wikis are by their nature incomplete. They are eternal "works in progress". People start stuff that others finish (or not). If you expect anyone who makes a change to make the same change everywhere else that it is required, all you will achieve is to deter people from making small changes. I count that as a loss to the wiki. (Yes, consistency is nice. Yes, I applaud people who set themselves tasks to make areas of the wiki more consistent - I've done it myself. But I recognize that not all contributors have to show that kind of dedication in order for me to consider them useful and welcome.) --◄mendel► 10:16, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
Oh, and I see how you meant it now. I pass on the apology. --◄mendel► 10:22, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
"I pass on the apology." It is better to let these things stay unsaid, pushing someone's attempt at forgiveness away will often infuriate them. If you're wondering why Ariyen is irritated with you, you shouldn't be. ∵Scythe∵ 14:01, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
There was no attempt at forgiveness, hence nothing to push away. I meant that would no longer insist on or ask for an apology, not that one, should it unexpectedly occur, would be unwelcome. I'm sorry I wasn't able to make that clear; it seems I expressed myself badly. --◄mendel► 15:15, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
"I expressed myself badly" You do this often, it is at the core of what I was saying.}}
I said "It is better to let these things stay unsaid" but you ignored the advise and said "not that one, should it unexpectedly occur, would be unwelcome." thanks for the slap to the face, I'll remember that one. ∵Scythe∵ 16:42, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

(Reset indent) I stand by my comment. The reason I used the phrase, "bossing someone around" is to point out how that idea is considered insulting; the quote, "I guess you try to be boss of everything Mendel," is an expression of that idea. Our own policy says that, "Comments should not be personalized and should be directed at content and actions rather than people"; this boss of everyone comment was directed at a person, not at the content of the discussion. Accordingly, I think Ariyen owes an apology.

If anyone has issues with Mendel's behavior as it relates to the wiki or the community, they can take it up with him directly; if he's unresponsive, ask the admins to intervene.

Here's why I think this is so important: Ariyen has a good point about consistency, readability, and our goal of being as helpful as possible to players. That idea is getting short shrift because of a comment directed towards one of the people involved in the discussion. The strength of any argument is severely diminished when it depends (even slightly) on characterizing the personality behind alternative views. We all do ourselves a disservice when we stray from the topic to discuss the people discussing the topic. — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 17:28, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

I'm not, because it's fact and that I felt he missed the points of how I feel in part a wiki "should" be. not by allowing one to just edit a few parts leaving the rest in a mess, where even if that user is in the right. It should be noted that the user "could" do the rest and to keep consistent either way, it should be one way or the other. I felt offended by him writing in his way, instead of making suggestions and leaving things as they are. As most have noted to me, if you want changes to some things that could cause a ripple, get consensus first. Some could give ideas like other pages to go by as to what all armor uses that type of name, etc. and all could be changed to reflect that instead of just things being bold. There are better ways to write, than some ways of which are written here lately. Hostility or offensive type writings from people can scare off others. Also, demanding or orderly writings type that want more more can scare people off. However, recommendations/ suggestions, perhaps noted even as such to be sure it gets off as that, can perhaps be a great way to encourage users to edit. Not by running them off, as I have pondered lately if it's worth editing here or not, due to such that's happened over the last few months, etc. You could say that the way of which I wrote that was taken wrongly, was not meant in a negative way at all, but as an alarm that had hoped would show the user as to how he/she is being towards other users. I'm just sadden that this user as usually took things rather too offensively from others instead of how others are trying to in a kind way show that user how he/she is being and only wishes the best. Ariyen 18:04, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
The comment on your talk shows me that one missed the points again. I see no hope, but I know if I feel of any bossing, I will seek out others. I just am tired of one whining offensively, yet doesn't consider or understand of how others feel. Either way of being direct or indirect. I still feel like the points get missed. I don't know, but I know that the bossin' that I felt wasn't needed. Also, it feels like support of inconsistency is better than anything to be consistent or fixed to help a wiki flow better. I know that having a few articles fixed may be better than not fixed, but it makes a wiki look bad when they're not "consistent" with other articles that are of the same nature so to speak. I think it's why I like projects, where more things get fixed to end up in the long run of being consistent and better. It's also why I prefer working in a sand box, getting consistency and then changing all the articles that need fixing to assure of consistency, but not before seeing what others think.
