first non-spam

Ever found a way to make the "RSS" and "Atom" feed options useful? I haven't. I also ask you since frankly I don't understand what they do. :p Entropy Sig.jpg (T/C) 22:22, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

Honestly, I've never seen the point of RSS. Maybe I just don't comprehend it completely, but receiving alerts whenever something changes on a website just seems kinda pointless. Maybe the concept has matured since I last paid much attention to it (which was when it was brand-new). Anyway, to answer your question, no, I don't know if/how the RSS/Atom feeds can be made useful. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 01:28, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
Oh, so it's basically a redundant recent changes. -_- I suppose if we ever implementent any real-time-based things (auction, contest, etc.) it could be useful. It's strange since it has been there since this wiki began (almost) yet no one I know uses it for anything. So I wonder why it was implemented. Maybe it's just part of MediaWiki. Entropy Sig.jpg (T/C) 03:37, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
I believe you're correct, I found a short explanation here. I suppose it could be useful to a person who isn't that much of an RC-vulture, but still wants to know what's going on; or for someone who wants to keep tabs on new pages only - letting the RSS reader sound alerts when new pages are created would be more convenient for them than constantly refreshing Special:NewPages. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 04:39, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
It's nice for pages like Xkcd, which update irregularly (sp?). --- Ohaider!-- (s)talkpage 09:34, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
xkcd is regular, Monday-Wednesday-Friday - it says so on the page, and I haven't noticed him to miss in the month or so since I've been reading. For webcomics in general, I keep all the ones I follow in a bookmarks folder, and I use Firefox's "Open all in tabs" function to check them every day since many of them keep a news blog that sometimes updates on non-comic days. If I felt like bothering with it, RSS might make that easier (for the ones that offer RSS feeds, anyway), but meh. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 13:31, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
xkcd is regular. The order of the stick, however, is not, so RSS is great for that. ¬ Wizårdbõÿ777(talk) 14:06, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
Ugh, I fail :P --- Ohaider!-- (s)talkpage 14:45, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
Some wikis (like update quite sporadically, so if you want to keep an eye on those, a RSS feed would be handy. --◄mendel► 09:22, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

JavaScript suggestion

If you see any merit in GuildWiki:Suggestions/Skin JavaScript, could you take care of that one, please? --◄mendel► 09:22, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, I don't see any merit in it - or at least, not enough merit for me to work on it. Anons who want to use another skin need to register an account, that's the entire point. And editors debugging skin issues can just set it in their preferences. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 14:33, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

new parser changeover

I would like to upgrade GuildWiki to use the new parser soonish (see the bottom of this suggestion for my reason). Here's the page with possible problems. All we have to do is basically to request it of Wikia, and then fix any templates that may be broken — I don't expect anything serious, though. However, it would be useful if we both were available to do any fixing that may be needed. When would be a good time for the changeover? --◄mendel► 09:22, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Meh, anytime. I'll be here. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 16:00, 18 October 2008 (UTC)
I set up Forum:New parser for bug reports etc. and included a suggested site notice to advertise the change. Now I'm going to ask Kirkburn to actually do it. --◄mendel► 23:18, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
It's live - see User:Warwick/Archive size. :-) --◄mendel► 23:40, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Unsigned template

Umm.... I don't get the difference between what I did and what you did? --JonTheMon 14:19, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Using subst: on a template, as in {{subst:unsigned|...}}, replaces or substitutes the template with the actual wiki-code that it generates. If you edit the page, you'll see the difference. Unsigned is meant to be used in this way, since all it does is insert the username/ip into a pre-defined text string - there's no reason to leave it as a template call. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 14:28, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Aaaaaaah. I have been enlightened. --JonTheMon 14:34, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Don't you have a custom edit-button which substs in the Unsigned template? That would be nice addition to common edit buttons. Entropy Sig.jpg (T/C) 15:05, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
No, but I can make one quick. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 15:49, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
   mwCustomEditButtons[mwCustomEditButtons.length] = {
     "imageFile": "",
     "speedTip": "Unsigned",
     "tagOpen": "{{subst:unsigned|",
     "tagClose": "}}",
     "sampleText": "username"}
Voilá. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 16:04, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
So you gonna add it or not? --Gimmethegepgun 23:35, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
DIY (To your personal css.js I guess). --- Ohaider!-- (s)talkpage 12:12, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, there's no reason to add this to common.js, it would just confuse people. Add it to your own Special:Mypage/monobook.js/Special:Mypage/monaco.js. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 14:47, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Hey, when I log into wiki, the top and side bars don't load (the search panel, my user options, edit, talk page, ect.). It took me about 10 minutes to find a way to get to a talk page to ask for help and I thank you so much for putting a link in one of your userboxes. I am adding this page to my favorites so I can get back to it later... but I could really use either yours or someone elses help Shogankillername.jpg 00:34, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

We've got wikia working on the problem; you can read the notice here. --Shadowcrest 01:01, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Half Borrowed, Half Stolen

Hello, I'm a fairly new member (at least when it comes to contributing), but I'm building up a userpage at the moment. I really like a lot of your layout and such, and wonder if it's ok if I might steal a couple of tricks off your character pages? (such as the Vanquisher templates and things like that)? With credit of course! Mr J 15:34, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Of course you can use stuff from my pages. If you have any trouble making it work for you, let me know and I'll try to help. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 20:18, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks a lot for letting me borrow freely ;) Most things are either obvious, or easy enough to figure out, I've found, but there's one thing that's bugging me: How do I get those neat little edit-links (those next to each section header)? I'm transcluding (I hope that's the right term) several smaller pages onto each character page, to keep it easier to update each bit at a time, but I'd really like a link to edit that "subpage" from the "main" character page. [edit] Mr J 03:42, 2 November 2008 (UTC) doh, I hear signing is good >.<
The edit links appear on the headings, so the solution is to move your headings from the character page to the subpage (and use === to mark them, if you use 4 or 5 =, there is no underline, so you can use them instead of bold text:

==== header with 4 = signs ==== ===== header with 5 = signs =====

If you want to explore templates further, Forum:Coding is a good place to start. --◄mendel► 08:14, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
Thank you very much, Mendel! That does clear up some thing, but I still can't get it to work within my character pages... I'm guessing there's something about it being inside the template (Dr Ishmael's character template) that stops it from showing up, because it shows up just fine at my still-basic-text main userpage... Mr J 22:13, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
You were exactly right, the m:magic word __NOEDITSECTION__ was on that page, and it disabled these links; the reason was that the using these links for the template-generated headers would have led people to edit the CharacterTemplate itself. I've copied the template and disabled the edit links for these headers by using <h3> tags; since the parser update, these don't generate the links. Dr Ishmael, you may want to apply these changes to your template and (re)move my copy at User:Mr J/CharacterTemplate. User:Mr_J/Mariano_Pomposo now has edit links where you need them. --◄mendel► 23:51, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
I've made the changes. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 00:26, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
And I've deleted the now superfluous copy. No more delete tag for me! :) --◄mendel► 00:51, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
Thank you both incredibly much for this help, even such lengths as creating a template and all (even if it was mostly duplicating), it's really a lot more than I expected! Now the page is working just like I want it :D I should try to read through (and maybe understand) that Coding-forum... Mr J 02:54, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
Nah, you shouldn't, only the stuff that speaks to you. But look up some of the useful links, and tell us how Help:Contents works for you. :-) --◄mendel► 02:58, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
If you don't mind, Ishmael, I've nicked a couple title-boxes you have on Takashi (and others), along with the Vanquisher progress boxes (love that one!). Should you have any objections, let me know! Mr J 08:22, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
No problem! I'm glad other people are finding my stuff useful. :D —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 15:12, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

making a searchbox

On GWW, the following code works to create a searchbox within a page (stoleb from Shadowphoenix):

buttonlabel=Find A Secret

Know anything which is equivalent for GuildWiki? I'm trying to salvage all the useful sidebar functons and put them on an "alternate main page" so I can try to still edit effectively while problems are ongoing. Entropy Sig.jpg (T/C) 16:02, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Also see the community portal for a way to add GuildWiki search to your browser toolbar. --◄mendel► 21:33, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Oh cool, thanks. I would add the GWiki search, but I don't like having extra stuff up there. Entropy Sig.jpg (T/C) 21:35, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Unless you have turned the browser search box off, it's not anything extra: just another search engine you can choose via the drop-down. I need to switch that back to google when I want to use that, so it's not completely without drawbacks, however. My favorite way to open the Wiki is to type a random word into that search box and see what that gets me. --◄mendel► 22:06, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Well see, I don't have any searchbar enabled, because it's an eyesore. :] Entropy Sig.jpg (T/C) 22:09, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
On my IE7, the search box is on the address bar (with the back and forward buttons) and I've no idea how to turn that off (whole, or just the search box), although I've just looked (and I think this is the second time I've tried). It's experiences like these that originally turned me off Microsoft products. --◄mendel► 23:21, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
FF2 and 3 both have Forward-Back-Refresh-Cancel-Home-Adress bar-Search bar, as the adress bar. It doesn't look bad, imo, because it doesn't stand out more than the adress bar (and it's small). --- Ohaider!-- (s)talkpage 12:36, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
Yes, my IE7 adress bar looks similar. The difference is, I can easily figure out how to turn it off or adapt it in FireFox. :-P --◄mendel► 23:17, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Category Contains rare crafting material

I see you and JonTheMon have undone the pages from the "Contains Amber" and "Contains Charcoal" categories that I had added to the "Contains rare crafting material" category. I had planned to add all the pages from the "Contains rare crafting material" category, "Contains..." subcategories to the "Contains rare crafting material" category. What I was trying to do was to provide a single page that lists all the drops that contain rare crafting material. Thus in the situation where you have an inventory full of drops and you are trying to decide whether to use an expert/superior salvage kit or a normal salvage kit on them you can see at a glance which items might contain rare crafting materials. As far as I am aware there is currently no page on GuildWiki that allows you to do this. If you do know of such a page please let me know. Alternatively if you can suggest a name for a new category to cover this please let me know. DemoniaFatalis 12:26, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

As far as categorization goes, it's not standard practice to put an article in both a category and a subcategory of that category, so I'm still going to oppose that idea. However, you can create a DPL page in your userspace for this. Just copy the following code:
  category=*Contains rare crafting material
Modify the columns value to fit your screen, and voila! You've got a list of all articles that are in the subcategories of Category:Contains rare crafting material. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 14:50, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, that does the job :) DemoniaFatalis 19:49, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Being created exactly once hardly makes something a spam target, and if that's a "vulgar word" I guess you've got much higher standards than I do. o_O Entropy Sig.jpg (T/C) 15:22, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Eh. It's not like we'll ever need that title for a legitimate article anyway. And we have evidence that this 18px vandal has recreated the same pages in the past, so I figured we could circumvent that. We have Template:Updates archive protected "to prevent mass vandalism" even though I can't find any evidence of vandalism to that archive box, even before it was templated, so I see nothing wrong with protecting this one even though it's only been created once.
And what else was I gonna say? "spam article; someone said a worty dird!" >.>? —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 15:35, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
Haha. Okay. Should we protect the full list, you think? All the ones they have created before? Entropy Sig.jpg (T/C) 15:40, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Ranger Krytan Armour Male ...

Hi there

Sorry to be noob ;) i'm new to adding to wiki's and i've just finished updating all the Ranger Krytan Armour/Male images ... I have added images that now use the default "gray" dye.

There is still however a warning image on the page indicating that we need actual gray images. - i just cant seems to figure out how to remove this message. do you know ?

thanks - Primetheus

The message was caused by the template's parameter "undyed." Setting it to "no" removed the message. I r smarts @ templatz :D Felix Omni Signature.png 08:57, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Vanquishing Title Boxes

I might be annoying you by now, but I edited my Vanquishing title boxes at User:Shogankiller/Carrier Of Darkness/titles and I left them open when I switched back to my main page, and now they are stuck open, and does not give me the option to close them (hide/show) again. Perhaps we should modify the image upload text (somewhere in the MediaWiki:Allmessages) to say something like "if you are going to upload an image for an armor gallery, please consult the Armor Gallery Image Guidelines" (or whatever the exact page is called). integer.px -> integerpx

Possible bot task? Entropy Sig.jpg (T/C) 20:41, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Not easily - you'd need a list of pages that use that syntax, and ".px" is too short of a search term for the wiki's search engine. It might be possible to get the list by parsing the dbdump, but I'll leave that to mendel. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 21:05, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Explain please? —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 23:37, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
Lets see... I searched for Image .px set count to 500 per page, and just keep scrolling through, using the page search feature on firefox to look for .px in the search results. Then the rest is click click boom. Question, 95% of these I'm fixing are Thoughtful's sig image. Did .px used to work or something? -- Isk8.png Isk8 (T/C) 23:44, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
Used to work but then they changed the parser and things went boom. Also, Isk8 stumped the Doctor. This day will live forever. :) Entropy Sig.jpg (T/C) 23:45, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
Lol... I guess that's a compliment. I am used to doing things manually. When it comes to using a bot, I'm sure he will have me beat forever. I figured that since they said .px was too short of a search field to search for, add into the field something else that would always be in that parameter hench image. -- Isk8.png Isk8 (T/C) 23:47, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, the part where you have to manually search through the search results is a "too much work" part. :P I was trying to formulate a solution that would return the exact list needed in a single step. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 23:56, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Wouldn't you like to do screenshots for the hair and face gallery that is in GuildWiki:Suggestions? 'cause that's kinda hard to bot (although I've thought about AutoIt). Or GuildWiki:Projects. That said, if you like menial tasks, you're welcome to it. --◄mendel► 00:29, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

And I just realized I never reported the issue on our wiki, but only here. Sigh. --◄mendel► 07:28, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
That's strange, I remember seeing it crop up in a number of places and somehow I knew it was a bug with the new parser, so I figured I must have read a post by you that it was broken. Or else I just got lucky to guess what the problem was. o_O In any case, I think the lesson here is that sometimes a human bot is better than a bot bot. Which I guess is the Doctor's best defense against the Rise of the Machines. ;) Entropy Sig.jpg (T/C) 12:19, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
I wrote about it on User talk:Thoughtful#New parser update broke your sig image, the gurus over at say it wasn't the parser update what did it (what else could it have been?),and human bots aren't better than bot bots. I am sure it has been studied and done before, but I am SO going to use that for a project/term paper/something someday. Entropy Sig.jpg (T/C) 16:19, 21 November 2008 (UTC)
I read a book a while back called Japanese Jazz, I think, about how the Japanese have a history of swinging back and forth from being either isolationists or cultural purists to being voracious consumers of Western culture. WWII was the culmination of one of those purist periods, and Japan's defeat triggered an extreme period of Westernism that is still ongoing. If Japan had won the war, the purist ideals would have been strengthened instead, and if they had never joined the war, they probably would've swung back to Westernism more slowly.
Motsu spent his 20's living in California, all three of them list many American and British artists as inspiration, and m.o.v.e. got their big break by doing theme songs for Initial D, an anime about street racing. Without the devastating losses at the end of WWII, Japan's automotive and entertainment industries would have developed differently, so Initial D probably would never have existed, and assuming the purist period had continued, m.o.v.e.'s musical inspiration would have been very different, so even if they did exist, they wouldn't be anything like what they are now.
And no, I didn't have any of that prepared ahead of time, it just flowed out as I was typing it. XD —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 17:03, 21 November 2008 (UTC)
Haha...I'd expect no less from you, Doc. :)
We (US and Japan) have had such a strange relationship in regards to cultural exchange. Cause it's worked both ways. As the Japanese are voracious consumers of the Western culture, Japanese stuff is also very popular here. It's easy to see this from anime, video games, Bawls, and other such stuff. "Japanese" is an "in" thing, though I'd hesitate to say it's exactly mainstream/totally common. US also has had times of intense isolationism (20s if I remember my history right at all)... Did I mention sushi? Or JROCK (Japanese Restaurant Owned or operated by Chinese or Koreans)? Ohh, rich topic is rich. I wonder why I didn't go for some sort of anthropology/sociology major... anyway I've been browsing YouTube and found a bunch of stuff from m.o.v.e. , but I think mostly the two you've got up are what I like best. The connection to the Internet through the NIC is wasting people's lives away, just like cyanide will kick their asses! And then we get to nearly 3 weeks ago, when all the asses (both Jack and Elephant) got duly scammed into positions of leadership where they can drag our country down just like cyanide will kill a person. Build namespace revisited

Special:WantedPages consists of primarily Build: and Build Talk: articles. Is it possible to create a bot to simply find those links and remove the link brackets around them? Mover-Shaker Bot

If you check the move log (or perhaps RC, depending when you read this), you'll see that Balistic Pve is moving user's pages to their new names with the GW- prefix. I know that you could get a list of all these by looking at the contribs of the Move page script, not sure about other pages in their userspace though. Anyway, I think it'd be a lot faster to make it a bot task. One reason is the "move throttle" - the bot avoids that because it has sysop status. :p Also, it could clean up after itself by them deleting the redirects, again because it has sysop status. Lastly for bonus points, maybe it could fix all the links to those pages so that we don't add to the wanted pages unnecessarily.

I have this strange feeling that normally I should use the GW:BOT page, but oh well, I don't want to have to repeat myself in two places. Entropy Sig.jpg (T/C) 22:42, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

Well anyways, until that happens I'll keep moving them. I've tagged most of them with delete, so hop on to it. --Balistic Pve (T/C/E) 22:53, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm just a bit busy, and I'd have to check what links here and fix the links, etc. Entropy Sig.jpg (T/C) 22:57, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
o i c , nvm --Balistic Pve (T/C/E) 23:01, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
That would be fairly difficult to set up, compared to the other bots I've done. It would have to first get the list of users that were renamed (where is that list, anyway?), then check Special:Prefixindex to get the list of all pages in their userspace, then for each page move it, update links to it, and delete the redirect. I could do it, I'm just not sure if I'd have the time or the inclination right now. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 02:00, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

To the best of my programming ability, the pages that should be bot-moved are listed on User:Dr ishmael/GW-pages-tobemoved.txt.
