Spam accounts

I don't think it would be better per se, just a lateral change. The idea is that we don't want those spam accounts to be reused, but they rarely are anyway. It would make those account names available for legitimate users, but the likelihood of someone wanting "Wonlas" is pretty low. 21:28, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

I never used the wiki while it was on wikia (and can't log in there). What is the appropriate method for creating/migrating my old account "crasher"? Thanks! ~crasher

Special:UserMigration will serve you. It's simple enough, but can get weird.

1. Enter the username "Crasher" and whatever password you want
2. When it splits out a code go over to wiki, and make an edit to your userpage, using the code as the edit summary. Make sure to change at least 1byte/character/thing on the page, othewise the wiki will consider it a null-edit and ignore it.
3. ???
4. Profit.

Thanks mendel, I didn't know that. I have however given up, since I can't seem to log in to Wikia with what I know for sure is the password and they don't have my email address to send me a reset. I set up a new account "Crasher1". If someone who can would merge Crasher, GW-Crasher, and Crasher1 and then rename my account to just crasher, that would be awesome. A few months after Wikia acquired GuildWiki, they merged our user database into theirs. Any conflicts where the GuildWiki username already existed on Wikia with a different email address were solved by prefixing 'GW-' to the GuildWiki user. —Dr Ishmael 19:40, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

Something I noticed... When doing preferences, you have that gww. So technically, we link to gww in that respect. We have links to the dutchGerman wiki and they do to us, but gww doesn't have links to either (they don't link us or the dutchGerman wiki). It's rather low, I think. Just wanted to say along these lines - is that I am PROUD of guildwiki, giving links, but also giving better details, etc. in most everything. I have found things here to be easier to navigate, etc. and I am wishing I had come here, instead of gww. Thank you. I'd add this to other pages, but I know people will see. Help Request: WIKISWTOR Account Ban

Thanks for your time. I accidently got myself banned while trying to teach myself how to edit wiki's. I don't know the exact reason, however I suspect it was due to my adding an external link to my SWTOR guild page and the DarthHaterDB page on my WIKISWTOR "User:Orthallon" page. I'd like to assure you (and everyone) that my sole intention is to contribute to the wiki, not use for personal/guild fame and I was unaware that external links were prohibited (if that was the cause), and in fact had planned on changing the guild link to a wiki-internal link once I made that page - but didn't get that far. If you are willing/able, please un-ban me, and if you know of a better list of things to not do/edit, I would greatly appreciate it. Here are the details of the ban notice:

I've unblocked your account on WikiSWTOR, sorry for the inconvenience. Currently the abuse filter there is set to a very low threshold for auto-blocking; as you guessed, it does not like external links. The strict measures are in place because of the sheer number of spam bots that the wiki drew before it was renovated; it's my hope that we can relax somewhat once we have a sizable editing population. Acutally, no, that's not sad, that is exactly what they should be doing - targeting sites that actively encourage piracy and prosecute the owners of the site. Not the lack of due process encoded in SOPA/PIPA where a site (and any site that linked to it) could be removed from DNS by anyone making an alleged accusation of copyright infringement.

There are plenty of other file-storage sites out there (my current go-to is Mediafire) that don't actively encourage priacy. —Dr Ishmael 23:01, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

As Gabe Newell said, piracy is a service problem. Provide better service than the pirates, and you won't have much trouble. The best examples are iTunes, spotify and steam. The ratio of illegal games to legal games played has been completely tipped over since I started actually going to the steam store. CNN's article has another, more specific quote from prosecutors: "The conspirators allegedly paid users whom they specifically knew uploaded infringing content and publicized their links to users throughout the world." Whether these allegations are true or not is something that will have to be proven in court. They had also obtained "20 search warrants in eight countries," and this is a key part of due process - SOPA/PIPA would have made such warrants unnecessary. It is unfortunate that this affects many people who used Megaupload legitimately without any intent to commit piracy, but there's not much anyone can do about that. —Dr Ishmael 19:14, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

It was kind of a surprise, to be honest- I just happened to be on IRC at the right time. I've been informed that there may be some compatibility issues with SMW (among other extensions) but the Curse team has done what they consider to be an extensive amount of testing and hopefully nothing will break too badly. This will be fixed very shortly, it appears that in your config you had writeapi permissions set to false for every historic usergroup and have had that setting forever.... With the upgrade to 1.18.1 this permission setting is what caused the problem.
