Wikia is what destroyed it in the first place. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 16:06, May 13, 2010 (UTC)
^ I initially moved (not deleted, Naz :P ) it because the sidebar was below my page, rather than next to it. I figured it was because of one of the many, many things on my userpage, so I cleaned it out. The sidebar was still broken and I resorted to allcaps, which did just as much good as creating a pretty much blank page. I felt utterly befuddled... So I pressed the Hide button, and now it works, and the Wikia shit is gone. --- VipermagiSig.JPG -- (contribs) (talk) 16:17, May 13, 2010 (UTC)

D5's going to be an RTS. I'm positive. That, or an aerial combat sim. --- VipermagiSig.JPG -- (contribs) (talk) 08:41, May 16, 2010 (UTC)
@ Ish: No you don't have to. I've never been at the shining blade camp with my Derv and she had peacekeepers. Unless it also counts whether you've been there before the camp was there, then it's possible I've been there (although I haven't got a clue where the camp is).
@Gimme and Viper: Well, I just hope Warcraft goes back to RTS... The storyline got raped by WoW. I'm not even sure how they can claim half of it is canon. --TalkpageEl_Nazgir 12:38, May 16, 2010 (UTC)
Hum, when they first added the PKers, Jink and I went looking for them, but couldn't find any until after we visited the Camp. Maybe they've changed it since then.
@Viper: That was a unspoken assumption: "That might be why..." = "I assume you haven't been there yet because you haven't been playing GW lately." —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 15:09, May 16, 2010 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure nothing in WoW is canon. MAYBE stuff like Furion getting stuck in the Emerald Dream, but that's it --Gimmethegepgun 16:04, May 16, 2010 (UTC)
@Ish: I recall I read somewhere that your character has to finish hell's before they show up.
@Gimme: Illidan surviving is one of the best examples of things that cannot be canon. He got his chest sliced open, and then an entire glacier fell down on him! Yeah, I'm sure he'll survive that! Or the worst example of them all: Blackwing. Who got killed in the Warcraft II expansion's human campaign ("ooh no, he faked his death and plummeted into the sea"), which is the canon one. In which also was mentioned that Kadghar went through another portal, which was retconned in WoW, surprise surprise... --TalkpageEl_Nazgir 15:13, May 17, 2010 (UTC)

It is tiny, and the 'focus' (center) is on his bald head, between his... ears, horns, whatever (WINGS!). His eyes are thusly barely recognisable as actual eyes unless you know it's a Mursaat. Eyes are, to me, the most distinguishing feature of a face, and the mouth is not shown at all. Also, I never knew a Mursaat head from above looked like a space ship (excluding upper torso there). I've always learnt that the definition of a job is merely "it has a benefit to society" (hence, all edits to the mainspace and related articles. Talk pages are more recreative than a benefit to society, especially in the case of trolls and the feeding thereof). This can be for just a few hours, shorter even, or something you do a life long.

monobook borked[edit source]

Same thing happened to me yesterday. Are you also running Firefox with AdBlocker Plus? Check to see if you've got a rule in there to block '##.content-ads' (depends on your list subscriptions, I had it at home but not at work (dunno why I have different subscriptions, but I do)). I'm not sure why or how, but that class got added to Monobook's main content div at some point yesterday. I disabled the rule and everything works, and I'm still not seeing any ads. (Although some might show up on other sites that use a similarly-named class, but I'll deal with them when I see them.) —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 16:25, July 23, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, that fixed it :) --Vipermagi 16:43, July 23, 2010 (UTC)
Any way we can do a .css hack to remove ##.content-ads from Monobook on GuildWiki? -- RandomTime 17:19, July 23, 2010 (UTC)
Pretty sure there's no way to remove a class from an element with CSS. We could do it with JS, though. However, what we should really do is check Wikia's CVS (SVN?) repository to see exactly where/how this got changed, then ask them to fix it. I don't know enough about their versioning system to check it myself, but mendel should. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 17:50, July 23, 2010 (UTC)
Or we could contact wikia with the change, and they can see what they've done. -- RandomTime 17:52, July 23, 2010 (UTC)
I guess I was trying to be nice, so we could say, "Hey, you screwed up right here, fix it," instead of, "Hey, you screwed up somewhere, go find it and then fix it." But you could just go ahead and do that. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 18:10, July 23, 2010 (UTC)
I'm fine with it either way. --Vipermagi 18:34, July 23, 2010 (UTC)

Locked Chests[edit source]

It's not just the desert. We have a saying in our guild: "That locked chest will be the death of you." They've cost us so many Deep and Urgoz runs, in fact, that we've actually started not going for the chests right away. It was rather difficult to convince everyone of the merit of this idea, though. --Macros 17:43, July 27, 2010 (UTC)

Thoughts -> Mamnoon Lagoon[edit source]

If you start from Quarrel Falls, the henchmen are L15, although it won't make much difference - you're still skale food unless you replace Alesia with a hero or two. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 14:14, July 30, 2010 (UTC)

Except to get to Quarrel Falls you either have to plow through Mamnoon, like I did, or complete two missions. Note that it wasn't really hard in the end, because Strength of Honor is overpowered (DPS +15 kthx), it was just silly to see Alesia spam healing her way through almost party wide -8 degen. But anyways, I imagine a fair number of people complete secondaries before primary quests, and Mysterious Message leads you to what is likely pretty deadly for inexperienced players. I wonder what ANet was thinking when they created an area like that.
Another fun fact of the Jungle: Mysterious Message leads you to Aurora Glade eventually (leads you to Quarrel Falls, and the primary quest there has no prereqs). What happened to Wilds and Bloodstone Fen? :P I wonder if people actually missed those two missions because of this? If I didn't know better, I would have skipped them on this playthrough until I figured I'd complete that one primary I took way back then... --Vipermagi 14:30, July 30, 2010 (UTC)
Ah, I wasn't thinking of it from a new-character perspective. I still remember the first time Jink and I got there - we saw the first giant group of Riders, thought, "That looks tough, but we can do it," then we got taken from behind by another giant group. We finally dropped off the message after wiping a few times, but we avoided that area for months afterwards (got to Alari from Quarrel), until they introduced the cartographer titles.
Another couple in our guild actually did skip those two missions (a long time back), and they were extremely confused by the switch of hostilities after Quarrel.

Mysterious Message was always a messed up quest in my opinion. Shut up, whitey[edit source]

"Nigger" is a word that white slave masters used to refer to people they liked to think of as less than human. If white people use the word, they put themselves into that context; by choice, since its use is rarely a necessity. There is no comparable context that works in reverse. (And I would be uncomfortable or offended if someone addressed me as "massa" or "master", for a similar reason.) --◄mendel► 18:29, August 21, 2010 (UTC)

And does anyone accusing you of racism actually know that, and does it still apply? Different example; gay. It used to be a British English word meaning "happy", or "overjoyed". Are homosexuals just a bunch of joyous fellows, then, or does 'gay' refer to homosexuality?
Also, context is, imo, defined by current circumstance, not that of dozens of years ago. Do two black people call each other 'less than human' as well, or do they mean 'brother'? --Vipermagi 18:51, August 21, 2010 (UTC)
The truth is: it's an unfair situation. The context is that, in the industrialized West (more often than not), White ppls get to be the boss and Blacks not. So, it's hardly a fair trade off: whites get the power and blacks get to reserve use of a word. There's no comparable term for whites, btw: whitey, honky, and mother-fucker just don't have the same connotative history. Ask me again when American blacks aren't making $0.60 vs $1.00 for whites, when rates of college graduation are comparable, when the country finally elects a black president, and when life expectancies are closer.
BTW: in similar situations, jews can all each other kikes, gays can self-refer to faggots, and so forth. Every group reserves the right to use negative terms for itself, but asks the rest of the world to shut the fuck up — I think it's reasonable to respect that without feeling that I'm being politically correct for its own sake. At the same time, I can understand why it bugs people to be asked to think about the terms they choose to use.  —Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 19:33, August 21, 2010 (UTC)
People are attracted to those who are "like them" by nature. This shows in businesses etc. as well, sadly. You also can't stop it, so basically, I won't ever have to ask you again. This does mean I can't forget to ask you again once those conditions are fulfilled, so there's a possitive side as well? ;)
I find it odd, almost hypocritical, that they demand to not be called "nigger" (or whichever example you take), walk around the corner, and immediately yell "nigger" themselves. To me, it's like correcting someone for confusing then/than, and yelling at the third for correcting you in a similar manner. --Vipermagi 20:09, August 21, 2010 (UTC)
The "like them" doesn't refer primarily to race, though. For example, we're all here because we happen to like Guild Wars, and don't necessarily know (or care) what race the various people are.
It's not hypocritical for one person of a given race to demand that you not use a particular word, and then for a different person of the same race to use that same word. If it's exactly the same person, then yeah, he's got no right to complain.
Still, arguing about racial slurs is progress of sorts. Two hundred years ago, a discussion of racism in the United States would have focused on people enslaved from birth until death through no fault of their own. One hundred years ago, it would have been about Jim Crow laws that legally relegated people to not having a lot of the normal rights of citizenship. Today, it's mostly about someone saying something idiotic (and often later apologizing), or else about saying something that sounds bad if taken out of context but reasonable in context, and someone taking it out of context. Not perfect, but a lot better than it used to be.
Comparing demographic information doesn't necessarily prove anything. Such data nearly always vary from one demographic to another. If Asians have higher college graduation rates than whites in the United States, does that prove that the US discriminates against whites? If women have a longer life expectancy than men, does that prove that the United States discriminates against men? If over 90% of on the job fatalities are men, does that prove discrimination by Grenth? I think it only proves that unequal outcomes aren't, in themselves, proof of systematic discrimination.
For what it's worth, the demographic things that Tennessee cites are also very much correlated with the childhood living situation with parents (e.g., live with both parents married and living together, parents living together but not married, living with one biological parent plus a step-parent, raised by a single parent, etc.). Have a regression based on that as well as race and the influence of race looks far less, and in some cases, nearly vanishes. Quizzical 20:43, August 21, 2010 (UTC)
Offensive words are really just the legacy of some of history's most successful trolls. The fact that people still get butthurt by them proves how successful they were. --Macros 20:48, August 21, 2010 (UTC)
This conversation reminded me of an interesting article on Bulbapedia. This one. Generally speaking, people outside the United States just don't give a shit about blacks. Felix Omni Signature.png 21:12, August 21, 2010 (UTC)
You support my point that it's the context that makes this offensive. --◄mendel► 22:15, August 21, 2010 (UTC)
Yes. I'd like to point out, however, that I only don't use the n-word for two reasons. One, it's the way I was brought up. Two, I'm afraid of getting beaten up. Felix Omni Signature.png 23:26, August 21, 2010 (UTC)

The sad thing in this entire situation is that "Nigger" actually just comes from the Latin "Niger", meaning black, so it's actually just the same as saying "black guy". The white people just don't have a Latin (or other) name based their skin colour. Based on this, I don't entirely understand what anyone finds offensive about the term nigger. It has been used negatively a lot, so I suppose it's just a pejorative evolution (for the dutch speaking people: just like "wijf" just used to mean wife).--TalkpageEl_Nazgir 15:11, August 27, 2010 (UTC)

Oh, it's even weirder than that! In the US, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People used the term embraced by the Black community of its time, when Black was a pejorative. In 2010 casual conversation, referring to e.g. Barack Obama as a colored person would be somewhat offensive (at least, in most Black communities), person of color would refer to nearly any non-European group, African-American is preferred by some, African American by others, and Negro (a term acceptable not too long ago) is also out.
Among others, Dick Gregory attempted to change the perception of the term by titling his autobiography, nigger [sic] and, on the cover, telling his mom, "Whenever you hear the word nigger, you’ll know they're advertising my book." Obviously, as the book was published in 1964, his efforts were spectacularly unsuccessful.
The point isn't, should a term be offensive? The point is, do we have reason to believe that the term is held to be extraordinarily offensive by a significant body of people. Even Obama, who is mocked in the US for his seeming inability to get publicly angry and remain the voice of reason even when his critics are being complete moronic assholes... even he would be shocked and angered to hear this particular term be directed at him.
(Incidentally, the studies that I have read, e.g. by The Public Policy Institute of California, clearly show that it's not just demographics. Studies like theirs control for education, history, single/married status of parents & current family, and so forth. Yes, those are all correlated. However, taking all things into account, Blacks still fare worse. Occam's razor suggests that the effects of 200 years of legalized discrimination is only part of the picture; current and systematic discrimination still takes place. [There's even a reasonable argument to suggest that the homeowner's tax exemption legally helps whites more than blacks, although I personally doubt that was an intended effect.])
tl;dr — It might be unfair, but then so is the fact that I have to use Windows to play Guild Wars. I can live with financially supporting the the Evil Empire in that circumstance. I can also avoid using the relatively few words that large swaths of folks find super-offensive. It's not a matter of political correctness for me; it's about being polite and gracious. Assholes are not reasonableness-challenged. Short people aren't vertically-challenged; we're just short.  —Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 16:49, August 27, 2010 (UTC)

I thought only I wrote long edit summaries[edit source]

This almost made it clear why remove the reference, but I'm not 100% sure (I don't really have to understand, so no worries if you don't feel like explaining).

Here's where my confusion comes from: It is my impression that there are lots of harpies/hekets w/o the quests. With the quests, there are even more. Either way, they fight each other. With the extra density of both, it's more likely that they will thin each other out before you reach them (and also easier to pull them into each other and stand back). I'm guessing that one of my assumptions above is incorrect (or I have the specific quest names wrong).

Anyhow, regardless, the edit summary made my day :-)  —Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 21:46, September 12, 2010 (UTC)

Without the quest, there are very few heket (only 3-4 groups of ~6, IIRC, spread out between Tihark and Jennur's). With the quest, there are a LOT more heket. Even with the quest active, I didn't really see them fighting the skree all that much other than the 2-3 groups that spawned really close to the center - even after those groups get finished, there's still more heket than normal.
Even so, I don't think the note is all that important. She Hungers already lists a number of areas where dense spawns of heket can always be found, regardless of other quests. (On the eastern side of Forum Highlands, especially the southeast corner, the heket are about as dense as they are during Desperate Measures.) —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 02:57, September 13, 2010 (UTC)
My reasoning was most based on the following: SH has absolutely nothing to do with DM.
Sure, both involve Heket, but why not also put a note on Frogstomp then. There are absolutely TONS of Heket everywhere, and you only need to dismember 10 Heket. Complete one random medium-length quest in Vabbi and you're likely to have murdered half a population of Heket anyways. If you needed a hundred, sure, list quests that involve tons of Heket in close proximity (or list Brokk Ripsnort). --Vipermagi 13:08, September 13, 2010 (UTC)

And again, I don't get it.[edit source]

Care to explain? Arnout aka The Emperors Angel 17:19, October 1, 2010 (UTC)

I ripped that line out of context, which is also why I linked the article.
Basically, you can transmute two armors together, retaining the looks of one armor, and the modifiers of the other armor. This is done with Transmute stones bought in the in-game store. This costs real money; the in-game store eats (digitised) dollars, not pixels. It's likely there's some statistical progression, so you'd either have to buy in bulk, or wait until you get the end-game gear and then transmute.
It's a feature millions of players have begged for, to almost every developer of RPGs. And they implement it and ask money for it.
Yes, it makes sense from a business standpoint (lots of people want it, so you can ask money for it), but it's still a dick move imo.
Note that this all relies heavily on the cost vs returns ratio. If you can buy a hundred transmutations account-wide for a single dollar, it's not that big an issue. However, they also ask, what, ten dollars for a small number of haircuts. --Vipermagi 17:29, October 1, 2010 (UTC)
FUCK!!!11!!one I totally missed the part wich says "from our ingame store." I was like: "Sounds good, I like it." But now, I'm like [peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep]! Arnout aka The Emperors Angel 17:34, October 1, 2010 (UTC)
Erm, I'm good with anything that costs real money but has only cosmetic impact. I already don't buy costumes, makeovers, and name changes. In GW2, I will also not buy Transmutation. At the same time, I am very happy for everyone else who wants the feature to help subsidize my playing time. :-)  —Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 18:03, October 1, 2010 (UTC)
It's entirely different from costumes, though. Armor stats are connected to a skin when you don't apply Transmutation. This means it's likely you will have a horrid mismatch, or a horrid statting. Transmutation allows you to keep the skin, but update the stats, similar to how armor upgrades went in GW1 really. Oh, yes, there's matching armors in a skin=stat system. Sets. I.e. you have the exact same stats and looks as the other person with that set, except for maybe dye. With transmutation, you could get any armor look, and still get 'the best' stats on your gear.
Live example. Diablo II. If you see a sorc in a purple armor, he/she/it has Tal Rasha's set. No doubt about it. This also means every sorc wearing that set looks exactly the same. --Vipermagi 18:30, October 1, 2010 (UTC)
I'm willing to bet that appearance alterations in GW1 only cost as much as they do because they were introduced so late in the game's life that they didn't expect the demand to be very high due to the greatly diminished playerbase. This would be introduced at the very beginning of GW2, however, so they could afford a much lower price point since the potential demand will be extremely high. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 18:36, October 1, 2010 (UTC)
