^ I initially moved (not deleted, Naz :P ) it because the sidebar was below my page, rather than next to it. I figured it was because of one of the many, many things on my userpage, so I cleaned it out. The sidebar was still broken and I resorted to allcaps, which did just as much good as creating a pretty much blank page. I felt utterly befuddled... So I pressed the Hide button, and now it works, and the Wikia shit is gone. --- VipermagiSig -- (contribs) (talk) 16:17, May 13, 2010 (UTC)

@ Ish: No you don't have to. I've never been at the shining blade camp with my Derv and she had peacekeepers. Unless it also counts whether you've been there before the camp was there, then it's possible I've been there (although I haven't got a clue where the camp is).
@Gimme and Viper: Well, I just hope Warcraft goes back to RTS... The storyline got raped by WoW. I'm not even sure how they can claim half of it is canon. --TalkpageEl_Nazgir 12:38, May 16, 2010 (UTC)
Hum, when they first added the PKers, Jink and I went looking for them, but couldn't find any until after we visited the Camp. Maybe they've changed it since then.
@Viper: That was a unspoken assumption: "That might be why..." = "I assume you haven't been there yet because you haven't been playing GW lately." —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 15:09, May 16, 2010 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure nothing in WoW is canon. MAYBE stuff like Furion getting stuck in the Emerald Dream, but that's it --Gimmethegepgun 16:04, May 16, 2010 (UTC)
@Ish: I recall I read somewhere that your character has to finish hell's before they show up.
@Gimme: Illidan surviving is one of the best examples of things that cannot be canon. He got his chest sliced open, and then an entire glacier fell down on him! Yeah, I'm sure he'll survive that! Or the worst example of them all: Blackwing. Who got killed in the Warcraft II expansion's human campaign ("ooh no, he faked his death and plummeted into the sea"), which is the canon one. In which also was mentioned that Kadghar went through another portal, which was retconned in WoW, surprise surprise... --TalkpageEl_Nazgir 15:13, May 17, 2010 (UTC)

Eyes are, to me, the most distinguishing feature of a face, and the mouth is not shown at all. Also, I never knew a Mursaat head from above looked like a space ship (excluding upper torso there). I've always learnt that the definition of a job is merely "it has a benefit to society" (hence, all edits to the mainspace and related articles. Talk pages are more recreative than a benefit to society, especially in the case of trolls and the feeding thereof). This can be for just a few hours, shorter even, or something you do a life long.

monobook borked

Same thing happened to me yesterday. Are you also running Firefox with AdBlocker Plus? Check to see if you've got a rule in there to block '##.content-ads' (depends on your list subscriptions, I had it at home but not at work (dunno why I have different subscriptions, but I do)). I'm not sure why or how, but that class got added to Monobook's main content div at some point yesterday. I disabled the rule and everything works, and I'm still not seeing any ads. (Although some might show up on other sites that use a similarly-named class, but I'll deal with them when I see them.) —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 16:25, July 23, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, that fixed it :) --Vipermagi 16:43, July 23, 2010 (UTC)
Any way we can do a .css hack to remove ##.content-ads from Monobook on GuildWiki? -- RandomTime 17:19, July 23, 2010 (UTC)
Pretty sure there's no way to remove a class from an element with CSS. We could do it with JS, though. However, what we should really do is check Wikia's CVS (SVN?) repository to see exactly where/how this got changed, then ask them to fix it. I don't know enough about their versioning system to check it myself, but mendel should. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 17:50, July 23, 2010 (UTC)
Or we could contact wikia with the change, and they can see what they've done. -- RandomTime 17:52, July 23, 2010 (UTC)
I guess I was trying to be nice, so we could say, "Hey, you screwed up right here, fix it," instead of, "Hey, you screwed up somewhere, go find it and then fix it." But you could just go ahead and do that. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 18:10, July 23, 2010 (UTC)
I'm fine with it either way. --Vipermagi 18:34, July 23, 2010 (UTC)

Locked Chests

It's not just the desert. We have a saying in our guild: "That locked chest will be the death of you." They've cost us so many Deep and Urgoz runs, in fact, that we've actually started not going for the chests right away. It was rather difficult to convince everyone of the merit of this idea, though. --Macros 17:43, July 27, 2010 (UTC)

Thoughts -> Mamnoon Lagoon

If you start from Quarrel Falls, the henchmen are L15, although it won't make much difference - you're still skale food unless you replace Alesia with a hero or two. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 14:14, July 30, 2010 (UTC)

Except to get to Quarrel Falls you either have to plow through Mamnoon, like I did, or complete two missions. Note that it wasn't really hard in the end, because Strength of Honor is overpowered (DPS +15 kthx), it was just silly to see Alesia spam healing her way through almost party wide -8 degen. But anyways, I imagine a fair number of people complete secondaries before primary quests, and Mysterious Message leads you to what is likely pretty deadly for inexperienced players. I wonder what ANet was thinking when they created an area like that.
Another fun fact of the Jungle: Mysterious Message leads you to Aurora Glade eventually (leads you to Quarrel Falls, and the primary quest there has no prereqs). What happened to Wilds and Bloodstone Fen? :P I wonder if people actually missed those two missions because of this? If I didn't know better, I would have skipped them on this playthrough until I figured I'd complete that one primary I took way back then... --Vipermagi 14:30, July 30, 2010 (UTC)
Ah, I wasn't thinking of it from a new-character perspective. I still remember the first time Jink and I got there - we saw the first giant group of Riders, thought, "That looks tough, but we can do it," then we got taken from behind by another giant group. We finally dropped off the message after wiping a few times, but we avoided that area for months afterwards (got to Alari from Quarrel), until they introduced the cartographer titles.
Another couple in our guild actually did skip those two missions (a long time back), and they were extremely confused by the switch of hostilities after Quarrel.

Shut up, whitey

"Nigger" is a word that white slave masters used to refer to people they liked to think of as less than human. If white people use the word, they put themselves into that context; by choice, since its use is rarely a necessity. There is no comparable context that works in reverse. (And I would be uncomfortable or offended if someone addressed me as "massa" or "master", for a similar reason.) --◄mendel► 18:29, August 21, 2010 (UTC)

And does anyone accusing you of racism actually know that, and does it still apply? Different example; gay. It used to be a British English word meaning "happy", or "overjoyed". Are homosexuals just a bunch of joyous fellows, then, or does 'gay' refer to homosexuality?
Also, context is, imo, defined by current circumstance, not that of dozens of years ago. Do two black people call each other 'less than human' as well, or do they mean 'brother'? --Vipermagi 18:51, August 21, 2010 (UTC)
The truth is: it's an unfair situation. The context is that, in the industrialized West (more often than not), White ppls get to be the boss and Blacks not. So, it's hardly a fair trade off: whites get the power and blacks get to reserve use of a word. There's no comparable term for whites, btw: whitey, honky, and mother-fucker just don't have the same connotative history. Ask me again when American blacks aren't making $0.60 vs $1.00 for whites, when rates of college graduation are comparable, when the country finally elects a black president, and when life expectancies are closer.
BTW: in similar situations, jews can all each other kikes, gays can self-refer to faggots, and so forth. Every group reserves the right to use negative terms for itself, but asks the rest of the world to shut the fuck up — I think it's reasonable to respect that without feeling that I'm being politically correct for its own sake. At the same time, I can understand why it bugs people to be asked to think about the terms they choose to use.  —Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 19:33, August 21, 2010 (UTC)
People are attracted to those who are "like them" by nature. This shows in businesses etc. as well, sadly. You also can't stop it, so basically, I won't ever have to ask you again. This does mean I can't forget to ask you again once those conditions are fulfilled, so there's a possitive side as well? ;)
I find it odd, almost hypocritical, that they demand to not be called "nigger" (or whichever example you take), walk around the corner, and immediately yell "nigger" themselves. To me, it's like correcting someone for confusing then/than, and yelling at the third for correcting you in a similar manner. --Vipermagi 20:09, August 21, 2010 (UTC)
The "like them" doesn't refer primarily to race, though. For example, we're all here because we happen to like Guild Wars, and don't necessarily know (or care) what race the various people are.
It's not hypocritical for one person of a given race to demand that you not use a particular word, and then for a different person of the same race to use that same word. If it's exactly the same person, then yeah, he's got no right to complain.
Still, arguing about racial slurs is progress of sorts. Two hundred years ago, a discussion of racism in the United States would have focused on people enslaved from birth until death through no fault of their own. One hundred years ago, it would have been about Jim Crow laws that legally relegated people to not having a lot of the normal rights of citizenship. Today, it's mostly about someone saying something idiotic (and often later apologizing), or else about saying something that sounds bad if taken out of context but reasonable in context, and someone taking it out of context. Not perfect, but a lot better than it used to be.
Comparing demographic information doesn't necessarily prove anything. Such data nearly always vary from one demographic to another. If Asians have higher college graduation rates than whites in the United States, does that prove that the US discriminates against whites? If women have a longer life expectancy than men, does that prove that the United States discriminates against men? If over 90% of on the job fatalities are men, does that prove discrimination by Grenth? I think it only proves that unequal outcomes aren't, in themselves, proof of systematic discrimination.
For what it's worth, the demographic things that Tennessee cites are also very much correlated with the childhood living situation with parents (e.g., live with both parents married and living together, parents living together but not married, living with one biological parent plus a step-parent, raised by a single parent, etc.). Have a regression based on that as well as race and the influence of race looks far less, and in some cases, nearly vanishes. Quizzical 20:43, August 21, 2010 (UTC)
Offensive words are really just the legacy of some of history's most successful trolls. The fact that people still get butthurt by them proves how successful they were. --Macros 20:48, August 21, 2010 (UTC)
