Life Update

Life has been taken over by the arrival of the Babyzilla. Delivery went fine, tho' I had to unexpectedly have a c-section. Both I and the lil' 'Zilla are doing great (even if I'm rather exhausted, but that's to be expected). Jink 14:50, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

My oldest sister has 2 kids (2 year+10months and ~1 year old) running around, and they visit a lot (heck, the youngest one lived here for the first half year; their home wasn't built until then). That's how I know babies are way awesome.

With the recent attention directed at the avatar log on the admin noticeboard, I couldn't help but check out your new avatar. You've probably noticed that uploading something that's not square to begin with produces strange results; and uploading something small and dark means that people need to use a graphics program to process the image to even recognize what it is. I'm sorry, I hadn't seen RC when you hopped on irc (and in fact didn't see your first appearance until after you'd left, and your second one was rather short), or I'd have known what you were on about and talked to you. I had hoped he and I were past that sort of thing. :(

Re: your staff noticeboard post, do you really think "my try" would be better than the one your husband has thankfully undertaken for us? He's clearly a capable coder, I doubt I could solve this task any better with that tool. It's not Dr Ishmael, it's the tool that is not holding up to the criteria that I am applying, and they are probably different than those he had in mind when he selected that extension. After a while, a person gets sick of having to fight the same battle over and over and over. That's when it becomes better to just leave instead of continuing with it and continuing to get stressed out about it. Some things just aren't worth it in the end. Because you just seem to keep undermining and challenging Ish, it makes doing anything for the wiki seem like it's not worth doing, because undoubtedly you'll come up with a different idea and override Ish with it. Regarding this block the other day. Rask says it wasn't him, which is dubious, but unless I'm doing checkuser wrong (which is entirely possible) that IP doesn't seem to be associated with him in any way. It's probably a proxy, but I'm just wondering how you arrived at the conclusion that it was Rask. 07:56, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

I checked the IP and it came from the same city as Rask's previous edits. Perhaps it wasn't him, just someone who happened to be in the same city who just happened to think it was a good idea to slather "cock gobbler" over Ish's title page, but since they did that, I wager aren't losing anything by my month-long block. We got 5 slots for the beta, which seems like a logical number for them to keep for release. It's enough to have 1 character of each race, but not enough for 1 of each profession, so they can make money selling extra slots to the people that need 1 of every profession. Like me. Standard practice for MMOs - give fewer slots than possible base character builds. GW1 - 4 slots for 6 professions, +2 slots for additional campaigns that add 2 professions, so 8/10 if you buy the Trilogy. STO - 2 slots for 3 careers in 2 factions, so 2/6. GW2 - 5 slots for 8 professions in 5 races, so 5/40. ArenaNet's gonna be raking in the dough from the completionists. —Dr Ishmael 02:58, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, that's what I said? Jink was talking about GW1 having 4 slots. And if that has been confirmed, I would be fine with 5 slots. And on the engineer, that was the profession I was most skeptical about up until this beta... and ended up being the one I played for 90% of the beta. I tried a Charr elementalist, a Norn mesmer, and a human warrior, but never got any of them past level 4, while I got the engineer to level 23, on last available personal story step, and 100% exploration of all 3 starter areas. —Dr Ishmael 13:11, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

I couldn't *stand* the Thief. Initiative + clearly-best skill? Yeah, no. Body Shot all the time, everywhere. The Vulnerability-spam on that thing overshadowed everything else, mostly because Vulnerability increases damage for *everyone*. Initiative is a really really bad mechanic for my playstyle :P Ah well. To each their own.

The Guardian was surprisingly much fun. Hadn't expected that. The Sword was by far my favorite. Very solid auto-attack with good damage and cleave. A 12-recharge teleport that blinds in an AoE. Zealot's Defense that just tears a dude to pieces fast, and blocks projectiles for 3 seconds. All in all, good mobility, decent AoE, great single-target, all in one weapon. Used both the Shield and Focus in the offhand often. Shield of Judgment was a neat buff and more solid AoE damage, but Shield of Absorption was useless for melee (great on the Scepter though). Ray of Judgment pumped some buffs and some damage, while the other skill (er.. Shield of Wrath maybe?) blocked 3 attacks or exploded for a load of damage. Definitely going to roll a Guardian once I've played Ele/War/Necro to death.

Staff Mesmer with clone. And Blink. I loved blink. I loved it so much. However, the class I had the most fun with was Necromancer. I played all weekend with a brony guild I joined and we were 2 warriors, necro, mesmer, and a ranger. One problem is the ranger's pets are still a hassle to keep care of. I would often find myself trying to res someone important and end up raising that damn devourer for the fifth time today. However, I am LOVING the crafting system. Got 100+ chef and 25 jeweler. Ah sorry ish, misread there. So yeah, my favourite class was the ele. Tried out engineer to level 7 first but didn't like it, then started an ele with a friend who went guardian, and I didn't leave it except for a short pause when I made a necro to try out whom I got to lvl 10 from a single night of WvW from lvl 2, but of whom I was later locked out for a long time by the server switch because he had gone offline while in a WvW area. They did fix that in the end so in the last few hours I went and tried him out in PvE a bit when WvW had died by 5 am or so. Then switched back to my ele for the ending event at 8 am.

I played my ele to lvl 13 or so in PvE then went into WvW, came back out at lvl 18, PvE'd a bit more to 20 and went right back to WvW until I was lvl 25 at the end of the beta. I enjoyed the class' versatility with the different elements, and to my great surprise I more often than not found myself playing as support to others offensive builds, a role which I hated in GW1.

And to pick on what giga edit conflicted me with, On ele I also absolutely LOVED the lightning teleport utility skill in WvW (not as useful in PvE though due to mobility being less of an issue). I haven't actually looked into crafting yet. WvW was too busy sucking me in so I just sold all my crafting mats. I did hear from many players that some of the dropped materials seem to be a bit out of balance (for example I remember someone on the beta forums saying he got 4 times as much jute than leather)--El_Nazgir 19:23, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

@Viper - I actually found myself using the sword + dagger combo a lot and using dual pistols in certain situations (flying targets).
