nice work on the inventory icons. --Jamie (Talk Page) 04:35, 29 June 2006 (CDT)

Don't forget to flag the old image with {{delete|Replaced}} if you upload a new one under a different name — Skuld Monk 09:37, 30 June 2006 (CDT)

Smurf, I do like the new images, but could you square them off and make them all the same size? Otherwise if they're used in tables it makes them look bad as each line ends up being different sizes. --Rainith 01:44, 12 August 2006 (CDT)
Just the collector items or all the inventory items I've uploaded? And does 64x64 sound ok? --Smurf 01:55, 12 August 2006 (CDT)
Off the top of my head, the ones that become an issue are the ones used in the merchant tables. The keys, and the cake/booze from the last event. Check out Merchant/Shing Jea Monastery for what I'm talking about. (hmmm, looks like the older ones weren't perfectly square, but they weren't as far off from being square as yours. If you aren't going to do thinks like bags, runes of holding or salvage/identity kits let me know and I'll at least get square ones of those up.) Thanks again.  :) --Rainith 02:15, 12 August 2006 (CDT)
I see what you're talking about. I'll start making perfect squares, and I was planning on uploading the other merchant items but changing all the links from .jpg to .png has made me nervous. I'll try doing that now. --Smurf 02:38, 12 August 2006 (CDT)
Much better. Thanks.  :) --Rainith 02:53, 12 August 2006 (CDT)
Just curious if anyone knows (may pre-date Smurf's work) - was .png selected due to the image quality or the tranparent background? The reason I ask is that in the listings we're resizing the images, and resized .png images look pretty poor on the wiki, while .jpg resizes much cleaner. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 03:50, 12 August 2006 (CDT)
I unsure myself. Half the icons are png and the other half jpg with a few gif. I just want to get rid of the black/green background on these icons. I don't mind using jpg with a white background or using png. The GuildWiki:Image use policy says to use png with icons that don't scale. At the time of uploading the material icons, they were only being used on their own page unscaled. After uploading they started becoming used as scaled icons ( like here). About half the merchant icons are png already so I figured might as well change them all to png. I'm willing to go either way just dunno which way to go. :S -- A confused Smurf 04:37, 12 August 2006 (CDT)
You're not the only one confused! And I do prefer the images with the white borders. As these are icons, then GW:IMAGE does permit the use of png, as it's a better quality image (no degredation from compressing like what you get with jpg). I'm wondering if we need to take this to the talk page for the community portal. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 10:24, 12 August 2006 (CDT)
We're partially saved - or even more confused. I just located the style and formatting guides.
The style and formatting guide for crafting materials shows to use .png
The stlye and formatting guide for salvage items shows to use .jpg
But I can't find a style and formatting guide for either collectable drops or for misc merchant items. So the style guides don't appear to be complete and the ones that exist are inconsistent with each other.
I know that Rainith worked on these some - I'll post on his pages asking for his input. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 10:37, 12 August 2006 (CDT)

Ok, let's see if I can shed a little light on this. Way back in the olden days, when I first started contributing regularly to the wiki (around 11 or 12 months ago), the Special:Upload page didn't say quite the same thing that it says now. It did not mention about the scaling issue that we have with PNG files. So as most of the inventory icon images at the time were in PNG format, I continued that with all the ones I uploaded at the time (including most of the collectable drops). Some time shortly thereafter it became apparent to most of the regular users (regular meaning people who did the majority of the editing, not regular vs. admins) that there was an issue with MediaWiki and the scaling of images in PNG format, but no problem with the scaling of JPEG format files. For example:

Ethalsar.PNG Ethalsar.PNG

That is the same picture (Ethalsar.PNG), the first is at its normal resolution and the second is scaled down to 80 pixels wide. As you can see, on the scaled version the color is completely wrong.

Now there is no question that PNGs have advantages over JPEGs (better quality, transparency), but they have too many disadvantages currently to be put into widespread use on the wiki (scaling issue, transparencies don't usually work in IE). Where we use them most is with the profession icons, and LordBiro, our "in house" icon wizard, actually uploads multiple sizes of the same icon so that we don't ever have to scale them (at least for what we use them for currently). See User talk:LordBiro#Nightfall Profession Icons for a look at his work.

Wow, this has gotten way to big and I haven't even hit the main questions yet. Sorry for the rambling monologue. Ok, looking at the posts above it looks to me like you aren't using the transparency functions of PNGs and are actually using a white background, if that is the case, and if you can get the same quality pictures using the JPEG format, why not switch to that for any of the ones used in tables and whatnot where they would be scaled down to a smaller size. Also, when you do upload new images, if the image's name doesn't match the item, change the name, use Superior Salvage Kit.png instead of Gwssalkf.png (also note that there is no need for underscores between the words, MediaWiki does them automatically). As to why the Materials S&F page says use PNG and the Salvage Item one says to use JPG, I did the Salvage Item page so that is why that one says to use JPG, but I don't think I had anything to do with the Materials one, so I can't speak for it. As it doesn't look like Gravewit has been able to fix the scaling issue, I'd suggest changing the Materials one to JPG if you think it is that much of an issue.

Again, sorry I got long winded and rambling here (I'm at work, give me a break, ok?), if there is a question that I didn't answer, or didn't answer sufficiently, let me know and I'll give it my best. --Rainith 18:10, 12 August 2006 (CDT)

This is the first wiki I've ever edited so I'm new, but is there a way to update every page that links to say SalvageKit.jpg to Salvage Kit.jpg or am I going to have to update each page individually? --Smurf 18:34, 12 August 2006 (CDT)
There are less pages that use it than it looks like because of the included tables, upload the new image and I'll change the pages. Just make the change on the item's main page and I'll fix the rest. --Rainith 18:37, 12 August 2006 (CDT)
Just leave a note, either here, or on my talk page when you're done with the merchant items, and I'll hit all of them at once.  :) --Rainith 19:09, 12 August 2006 (CDT)
Ok, I think I got all the merchant items except Starter Shield because the filename Starter Shield.jpg is already taken. Should I just replace it? --Smurf 21:59, 12 August 2006 (CDT)
Go ahead and use Image:Started Shield icon.jpg, I'll start on the merchants shortly.  :) --Rainith 22:10, 12 August 2006 (CDT)
I was involved in the early decisions as to which format we should use for icons and I argued PNGs. This was before we knew there was an issue with some PNGs being resized (although recently it seems all PNGs are affected). It would be so much easier if Wikipedia:ImageMagick or something was installed on the wiki.
Anyway, good work on the icons Smurf :) <LordBiro>/<Talk> 03:27, 15 August 2006 (CDT)

Image Deletion

One small thing. When you replace images, please mark the old ones for deletion. You can do that by going to the old image, pressing 'edit' and adding {{delete|reason}}. Replace the text 'reason' with what ever the reason for deletion is, in this case 'Image hs been replaced'. --Gem-icon-sm.png (talk) 17:07, 15 August 2006 (CDT)

Don't want to speak for Smurf, but since I have deleted around 20 replaced images, I think I can say a user can make a mistake every once in a while. One out of 50 or so isn't that bad. -Gares 17:15, 15 August 2006 (CDT)
Not a problem, just wanted to point out. I went through the unused images (again) and noticed some left overs from Smurf. On a side note: This is one of the times when I would love to be an admin, because now I need to find someone else to delete the images on my FIFTH delete list. --Gem-icon-sm.png (talk) 17:32, 15 August 2006 (CDT)
Sorry about that. Rainith was helping me replace the merchant item icons and I forgot to mark the old ones for deletion after he was done. I'll go through them and make sure they all got marked for deletion or deleted. --Smurf 19:18, 15 August 2006 (CDT)
Also, should I delete old versions of images with the same name or how does that work? --Smurf 19:23, 15 August 2006 (CDT)
Only admins with the means to delete can do so. Just mark them for deletion and we will take care of the rest. A community working together....it's a good thing. ;) -Gares 19:26, 15 August 2006 (CDT)
He's right you know, we all love communism here! Just agree with me Smurf, one of the KGB is watching. :P For the greater good of the community! --Xasxas256 19:36, 15 August 2006 (CDT)

Collecting items

I noticed you are collecting some items. From your list of needed stuff I am able to sell you Firewater and Candy Cane. --Gem-icon-sm.png (talk) 00:54, 13 September 2006 (CDT)

I'll take the Firewater. I already have a Candy Cane unless you meant the Candy Cane Shard. I added you to friends list and will give you a pm if I see you on. --Smurf User Smurf.gif 19:41, 14 September 2006 (CDT)
I'll be online in the evening. :) --Gem-icon-sm.png (talk) 23:17, 15 September 2006 (CDT)

UW map.

Did you just mapped This between the update and now? Foo 01:17, 15 September 2006 (CDT)

I got it after the update because of the new U-map. --Smurf User Smurf.gif 17:46, 15 September 2006 (CDT)
I haven't had the time to go there. are you saying that characters were already 'mapping' the area, and it's just now shown? (ie, my ranger will have the whole area maped once I'll get down there, considering I've already cleared it all with her?) Foo 13:30, 16 September 2006 (CDT)
No, you have to clear it all over again. --Smurf User Smurf.gif 14:34, 16 September 2006 (CDT)
I'd like to talk to you in-game. Miss Foo 03:01, 18 September 2006 (CDT)

New icons

Wanted to let you know that I uploaded a few new Nightfall Salvage item icons that will have to be place holders until you work your magic on them: Image:Salvage Plant.jpg and Image:Salvage Fin.jpg. Also I copied and re-uploaded one of your images as Image:Salvage Goods.jpg mostly 'cause I'd like to keep the salvage items' images seperate from other items (easier to keep track of stuff that way, plus the files are small). I gave you credit as the original poster of the image, hope that was cool with you, if not let me know and I'll nuke the image. Also if you need to get these items in-game to take you own images of them and don't want to try to find them let me know, I still have them sitting in my inventory. --Rainith 04:57, 23 September 2006 (CDT)

Thanks for the list of images. If you ever need to reupload/move an image don't worry about crediting me. --Smurf User Smurf.gif 09:59, 23 September 2006 (CDT)

Nightfall Skill Icons

Where did you get the new Nightfall Skill Icons from? --Warrior's Endurance.jpg numma_cway 12:05, 24 September 2006 (CDT)

From in game at the Priest of Balthazar --Smurf User Smurf.gif 16:43, 24 September 2006 (CDT)
How did you remove the border? --Warrior's Endurance.jpg numma_cway 14:34, 25 September 2006 (CDT)
My own special technique ;) --Smurf User Smurf.gif 16:23, 25 September 2006 (CDT)
All "old" professions have neither a border nor these arrows for Hex or Enchantments. The "new" ones have both. But why? ;) --Warrior's Endurance.jpg numma_cway 16:32, 2 October 2006 (CDT)

new icon images

Hey, I've got a couple items in game that I can let you borrow to make images of if you would:

Let me know if you want these to make images.  :) --Rainith 00:46, 18 November 2006 (CST)

Collecting thingies

I probably have some of those, PM me in game (General Rufus Dida) and let me know which ones you still need, I'll take a look. BTW your user page kicks butt. - BeXoR Bexor.png 07:22, 21 November 2006 (CST)

Character images

How did you get those character images? Did you cut them manually? or did you used some program? If you used a program could you please tell me what that program was? Thank you!--Phoenix Phoenix Benu.png 05:55, 27 November 2006 (CST)

Advanced image editors such as Photoshop have a simple tool, the "magic wand", which can be easily used to cut the background from a pic of your character even with no image editing experience. --Gem-icon-sm.png (talk) 10:28, 27 November 2006 (CST)
Yup, I just manually cut them. I took the screen shots at 1600x1200 without anti-aliasing or post-process effects. Then I erased the background and scaled the images down. Luckily my warrior doesn't have hair :). Which reminds me, I need to get my other character pics up. -Smurf User Smurf.gif 19:09, 27 November 2006 (CST)

Runes

Hi Smurf, any chance of you making some rune icons for the paragon and dervish, the one's up at the moment are not of the same quality as all the rest you made. :) Thanks! --Lemming64 02:28, 1 December 2006 (CST)

Travel

Hi, I hear you're good with images and stuff, so I came to ask a favour. :)

I made this: Image:Travel.png really quickly one day after some discussion at Talk:Travel to Tyria. I use Photoshop and I used colour select to get rid of the blue around it. It turned out alright I suppose, but it could be better. I am not that great with that aspect of image editing.

If you look here: Quests (Prophecies) you can see what the icon is for (scroll down to the Lion's Arch quests). You can see it doesn't look so pretty. I messed around with the sizes here if you want to see more examples.

Anyway, I'm not very happy with the result, so if you think you could achieve something better that would be great. We thought about using the little gold man with the walking stick but I couldn't figure out how to caputre it without hacking the .dat for the pointer. - BeXoR Bexor.png 03:44, 2 December 2006 (CST)

Instead of ripping something from the game, would it not make sense to create an icon like the profession and quest icons? I've always thought it looks pretty inconsistent to have icons like Monk Elementalist Ranger next to Signet of Capture.png and Travel.png. <LordBiro>/<Talk> 05:38, 2 December 2006 (CST)
Is that a volunteer I see? :P - BeXoR Bexor.png 08:05, 2 December 2006 (CST)
Probably :) <LordBiro>/<Talk> 11:15, 2 December 2006 (CST)
Well I went ahead and replaced it. If you guys go a different route then go ahead and replace it. -Smurf User Smurf.gif 11:24, 2 December 2006 (CST)
The full size version does look a lot better, but the smaller version doesn't look very different. <LordBiro>/<Talk> 11:40, 2 December 2006 (CST)
I can see improvement in the small one. It's less sharp! Thanks Smurf, I don't know how you do it. :) - BeXoR Bexor.png 20:59, 2 December 2006 (CST)
Any image that is going to be scaled by the wiki should probably be in jpeg format (see conversation at the top of this page). If the png scaling issue is ever resolved on the wiki, I'd be more than happy to change my opinion, but until then the scaled pngs never look as good as a scaled jpeg of the same image (IMO). --Rainith 00:21, 3 December 2006 (CST)

Your main page, can I 'copy' it?

Hi there!

This little word to ask you if I can simply copy/paste your character "template" on my personal page? (with a link to you for credits, of course) The preceding unsigned comment was added by Corsaire (contribs) .

If anyone wants to use it, go ahead. Also if anyone figures out how to get little [edit] links for each character, please let me know. -Smurf User Smurf.gif 18:13, 4 December 2006 (CST)
Thanks (and sorry for unsigned comment, I don't know why I forgot it).. anyways.. thanx.. (you'll be credited, of course.. ;) ). And for the little edit, I'll search.. ;) Corsaire 02:58, 5 December 2006 (CST)
There was some way to make custome edit buttons, but I'm not sure if you can make your characters into sections without headings. PanSola is the one you should probably ask. --Gem-icon-sm.png (talk) 03:00, 5 December 2006 (CST)
Can't you "just" make a table, and in each box, link to a page (like {{character_1}})? You would have the [edit] link, no? Corsaire 08:21, 5 December 2006 (CST)
Woops, forgot to press 'save page' earlier. It wont work as you might have noticed. The only way to get a edit link for a section is to have a heading. But: Now that you have the stuff on different pages, you can manually make an edit link which sends you to edit the page in question. See the skill pages for an example. --Gem-icon-sm.png (talk) 18:31, 5 December 2006 (CST)
It works! Thank you! :D -Smurf User Smurf.gif 19:17, 5 December 2006 (CST)
Gem, Yes, this is what I meant, but seems that I didn't find words to express it.. ;) but happy to see tht it works.. :D
PS: Smurf, "Les Schtroumpfs".. they come from my country.. :D Corsaire 03:18, 6 December 2006 (CST)
No problem Smurf. Feel free to ask me if you have problems with anything similiar later. --Gem-icon-sm.png (talk) 04:39, 6 December 2006 (CST)
Done.. you can see it in my user's page.. ;) thanx again.. Corsaire 09:33, 11 December 2006 (CST)

Family Sigil

Fairly certain Family Crest is the renamed version of this, it is the same quest anyway, I am guessing it is the same graphic too? I am unsure as to which update changed this though. --Lemming64 19:28, 10 December 2006 (CST)

I'm just curious how you cut your character images so percisely :s. It makes the page look so much more professional. -jonny5vAssassin's Promise.jpg 10:00, 13 December 2006 (CST)

You can do it in photoshop using the background eraser tool, I asume he stands somewhere in the shiverpeaks and uses a similar program and tool — Skuld 10:02, 13 December 2006 (CST)
