You do not need to read any rules before contributing to GuildWiki. If you act reasonably and logically, your actions will usually be right; if not, it takes two mouse clicks to undo them. If your edits prove contentious, they will be discussed appropriately.

Note that this policy does not subvert all other rules; it is not a "get out of jail free" card. This rule supersedes other site policies when it would be detrimental to follow static site policy. There are times when rules would be better off broken.

Here are several other things that "Use Common Sense" does and does not mean:

What "Use Common Sense" means[]

  • Don't follow written instructions to the letter.
  • Rules derive their authoritative power from being a reflection of the common beliefs and practices of the community, not from being written down on a page labeled "guideline" or "policy." Sometimes it's alright to give in to peer pressure.
  • Sometimes, site policy just cannot stay current with the practices it describes. If site policy is out-of-date, it may be better to follow the spirit, if not the letter, of the policy.
  • "The spirit of the rule trumps the letter of the rule." The common purpose of providing a quality resource for Guild Wars players trumps both.
  • Obeying the rules is less important than improving the site.

What "Use Common Sense" does not mean[]

  • A user may not use this policy as a carte blanche or a trump card. If you plan on breaking the rules, you had better have a credible explanation for it.
  • Assume good faith when someone breaks a rule, but don't feel obstructed from pointing out policy breaches when you are witness to them.
  • This policy is not an excuse for breaking the rules. Site policy exists for a reason; you had better have a good reason for violating it.
  • There is no exemption from accountability hidden in this policy. You're still responsible for reasonably foreseeable effects of your actions on the wiki and towards other users.
