Category:Collectors format standardization campaign

While doing research for my User:Dr ishmael/Collectable trading article, I noticed that a lot of the collector and collectable drops pages had inconsistencies and even errors in both their content and formatting. I corrected some of these, but only where it was obvious; I know there are still a lot of problems.

Since the collectors already have a style guide, I'm going to work on them first - I plan to find them all in-game and verify all their info, as well, since I already noticed a few that were incorrect. When that's done, I'll write a style guide for collectable drops (adding it to the Items style guide) and work them over as well. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken (talk|contribs) 12:10, 1 February 2007 (CST)

Clarifying 1RV misunderstanding

"Reverting" a page is to restore it to its previous state. Therefore, if you make a new change to a text, and this change is reverted, it does not constitute a breach of the 1RV policy. mikkel 15:04, 11 April 2007 (CDT)

Vanquisher

Hi, on the vanquisher page, stating that you are 'completing' a quest seems redundant since that tab is only for quests that affect the number of enemies... hence while the quest is active and whether or not you are completing it. It should be in a similar format as all the other quests. Rcollins779x 18:32, 24 May 2007 (CDT)

Greetings. I noticed you reverted a change someone made on the Vanquisher page regarding Bukdek Byway. Whoever changed this to one is correct. If you have both The Drunken Master and Chasing Zenmai active, all you need to do to vanquish this zone is to defeat the Drunken Master. I have verified this, as it is how I vanquisher Bukdek. --Flask Of Firewater small Ale 13:19, 30 July 2007 (CDT)

Oh, I get it now. The way they made the edit didn't make any sense because they didn't make it link correctly to the quests. I'd forgotten about the "The Drunken Master" quest, and thought they were just being funny making it say "Zenmai and Drunken Master".
Still, as that is a special case, it should be mentioned in a footnote like the one for Zen Daijun. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 17:26, 30 July 2007 (CDT)
I agree, a footnote is probably best, but your Summary note said "Huh?" so I wasn't sure if you knew about the special case. Cheers. --Flask Of Firewater small Ale 18:08, 30 July 2007 (CDT)

Sortability at Collecting for fun and profit

Please see my response at that talk page, and thank you for commenting. 15:42, 21 July 2007 (CDT)

EotN and Collectors

I was wondering if you were working on another section to the "Collecting for fun and profit", for EotN collectors. Since all of EotN is "L20 high end campaign", all the collector items are by default maxed. However, I was not sure if any/all gave profit for collecting (since I don't actually have it yet >.>)...no unique collectables other than the Armors are available, so for me the only reason I have to keep and collect EotN drops is if I can make some cash profit. Otherwise I would just trade in stuff from other campaigns, since that's easier... Entropy Sig (T/C) 00:43, 16 September 2007 (CDT)

Nope, Anet made sure there was absolutely no profit in collectibles this time. All collectibles are worth at least 20g to the merchant, all collectors want at least 5 of an item, and all collector items are only worth 100g. The best you can do is break even. Unless some odd item like Aged Dwarven Ale has a really high market value for some reason, there won't be an EotN section to that article. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 11:43, 16 September 2007 (CDT)
Aww, damn. Well thanks for checking. I can finally go sell off all those collectable drops I got in the Sneak Preview Weekend. >.> (except for Superb Charr Carving, lol) Entropy Sig (T/C) 11:45, 16 September 2007 (CDT)

Bot Mode.. Disabled (Concise descriptions)

Hehe, nice job with all of the concise descriptions. :) —MaySigWarw/Wick 12:07, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Bot mode, wha? >.> Just another case where I was momentarily bored with playing the game, browsing the wiki, noticed something missing, and decided I'd add it. And I do kinda go into a "bot mode" mentally with tasks like this, or the weapons QR project... which I need to finish up soon... right after I finish this... <.< —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 16:00, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Oh, question: I noticed that some people who'd already added concise descriptions had wikified them, while others didn't. My opinion is that everything's already wikified in the standard description, so there's no need to wikify the concise one as well. Was there a discussion on this somewhere that I should read? —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 16:15, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Drat, while you're adding the concide descriptions it's not updating the Category:Skills_missing_concise_description category correctly, 'suppose I'll be making some null edits to update the category. --OrgXSignature 18:53, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
I believe that's happening because the skill articles get that cat from the skill template, within which the cat is only specified in an parser function. I think I read somewhere that the wiki should update stuff like that once per day, but I dunno if Wikia has it set up that way or not. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 19:00, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Good work! And no, there hasn't been a discussion (that I know of), but since as far as I know the general rule is one link to a specific thing in an article, only the full description would have the links. --Shadowcrest 18:58, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Actually, it's usually 1 link per section, but both descriptions are still in the same section. That's what I'm going with then. I won't bother de-wikifying ones that already have it, though. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 19:00, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Oh crap, I really screwed up. The coding includes any page that the template is included on, including using templates that are transcluded by another template.. Dammit! —MaySigWarw/Wick 19:07, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Bah, I'm relying too much on Firefox's auto-complete to fill in the edit note. So if anyone sees weird notes (like the one on Oppressive Gaze saying the concise description is identical), just ignore them. ^^; —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 20:06, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Whew... All player-usable skills (including all PvE skills, temporary PvE skills except for Category:Allegiance Title skills and three of the Celestial Skills (monk, mesmer, assassin), and the Bonus Mission Pack skills except for Spectral Agony (hex) (I didn't feel like playing all the way through that one right now)) have a concise description. Big thanks to Jedi Rogue, Progger, Organism X, Theruon, and everyone else who had already added some - if you people hadn't started it, I never would've. I hate to do a job half-assed, even if I didn't realize it at the time. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 01:12, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
I'd finished E, W, and most of R before you posted about this, and since then I was able to go back through all of them and wikify the concise descriptions. While doing so, I also took the liberty to standardize the wikification of both forms of skill description:
 • I left out links for terms like foe, damage, attack, etc. These are really basic things that anyone playing GW should already know, and they were already un-linked most of the time anyway.
 • I enforced wikification of Energy, since it was almost always linked, and I added links for adrenaline, which wasn't usually linked, because it is also "fuel" for skills, just like Energy is.
 • I fixed the capitalization of terms in the standard description after I noticed they were screwed up. In-game, Energy, Health, and condition names are nearly always capitalized, and other terms like spirit, skill, spell are hardly ever capitalized. However, I noticed Spirit, Spell, and Skill (among others) capitalized quite often in the descriptions here. Did they used to be capitalized and Anet changed it?
 • I enforced one-link-per-section within the standard descriptions. Most Nature Rituals had Spirit linked every time it appeared for some reason, and a lot of skills with both primary and bonus damage would have damage linked twice.
I'm gonna crash now, but I'll be back on this tomorrow. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 06:04, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
Hmm, the monk skills seem to have a 50/50 split on wikifying heal. Since Heal redirects to Health, and most descriptions have both anyway, I wonder if this one really needs to be wikified. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 17:03, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Btw what's wrong with placing the concise description on the bottom of the template code? --Progr -- talkpage 16:48, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Nothing wrong with it exactly, it just makes more sense for it to directly follow the full description - especially when I'm comparing the wikification. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 16:52, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
Ah ok, I'll think of it if I add more of them in the future. Luckily I did it right with the prot skills. --Progr -- talkpage 16:54, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Make sure you're using correct capitalization, too - I notice you capitalized "Skill" in you comment there, so I thought I'd mention it. I'm seeing a lot of normal descriptions that have capitalized words that shouldn't be, as I noted in the above section. I haven't seen this in any of the concise descriptions (I haven't been looking at who added each one) yet, but just in case. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 19:53, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, I usually don't capitalize anything, but when I do, I capitalize too much... But as I am just transcribing the descriptions from my guild's Priest of Balthazar that won't be a problem. theruon 19:56, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

more consise work

monster skills won't show up in the needs concise cat because they have a nocats attribute. If you want to add concise descriptions to monster skills, that would probably be more useful than what you're currently doing. —JediRogue 22:41, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I know about those, but they'll require me actually going out and finding the monsters in order to screenshot the skills... unless this other idea works out. All in-game text is stored as Unicode text within gw.dat, so it's just a matter of finding the descriptions and then matching them up to the right skills, which shouldn't be too difficult. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 16:11, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
Whoo! I now have concise descriptions for 99.6% of everything in the game (2302 total skills/effects/etc that I found in gw.dat). I'm gonna have lunch, then start adding them to the wiki. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 18:15, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Wow, less than a week ago I hadn't really thought about becoming an admin, but then Gigathrash put up the RfA, I had an email convo with Entropy, and now here I am. It's been a crazy few days, that's for sure.
Thanks for giving me the opportunity to serve the wiki in this capacity. I'll continue making mainspace contributions, of course (the weapon QRs and CSDs for monster skills still need to be finished...), but I suppose now I'll dedicate most of my time to deleting the hordes of unused images and the other "housekeeping" that needs to be done (while I don't particularly want to be known as the GWiki Janitor, I guess that's pretty much what I volunteered for XD).
Is there any sort of "admin guide" that I should look at - something that explains the sysop tools, etc.? Also, what will be expected of me outside of the janitorial duties? I'll take care of my admin info in the morning, right now I need to crash. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 05:16, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

I got the nickname waaaay back in high school, actually. It was completely random - a friend of mine, who had just decided that he would be known for the day as "Doctor Bobo" (I think from MST3K), decided that I needed a nickname too, so he dubbed me "Ishmael" (from Moby Dick). He then granted me the title of "doctor" so that we would be equal partners in "Dr. Bobo and Dr. Ishmael's Fried Pickle Stand." Hmm... perhaps that's a good reason to stop for the night, I might be drunk enough to start putting snarky comments in the delete reasons... >.> —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 06:38, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
250 mL? That's like beaker sized. Felix Omni Signature 06:57, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
Beakers come in all sorts of sizes. I've seen them from 5 mL all the way to 5 L. But I get what you're saying. Sake is pretty strong, though - stronger than most wines, but not quite as strong as hard liquor. The one I had last night was 20% alcohol, so I think it would've been equivalent to about 4 pints of Guinness. Which, for me, is a lot. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 16:04, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

After you run your bot

Leave a messageon my talk. A lot of the links to PvX will link to build pages that have been moved/deleted, and as a PvX admin I get to see the little "View or restore xx deleted revisions?" messages, so I can find where the ones that were just moved more easily. Plus, I'm basically a bot, so it shouldn't take long to fix them :P ¬ Wizårdbõÿ777(talk) 00:03, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

That's a good idea. My bot can write a local file with the name of each article and the link within it that was modified. Then you can just give me a list of "old build name" -> "new build name", and I'll run the bot again to fix those links. Just have to wait on Kyle to flag the bot accounts... >.> —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 00:06, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

: )

To put it simply, you haven't disappointed me, and I am very pleased with how much work you have done on deletions. The lists have never looked so clean. And with a bot to fix the Builds: redlinks, it will only improve.

Keep up the good work and know I'm proud of you. Entropy Sig (T/C) 03:29, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

*bows* Thank you, very much. As I told you, all I needed was incentive... and I think the delete logs speak for themselves. XD I've made sure to keep myself involved with mainspace edits (and to keep playing GW) while doing all that, so I don't get burned out too quickly. And I've got more ideas for bots to help with non-subjective cleanup tasks, including ways to get the GW.com news articles off the dead-end and orphaned pages. If there's anything specific you'd like me to focus on besides unusedimages, just let me know. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 04:06, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Builds wanted pages

My idea is to make a bot run for each build, replacing the red link with an external link to the closest existing build in PvX. I can make the list of correspondance.Ereanorsignreanor 15:49, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

That's exactly what I'm doing - it will scan Special:Wantedpages, for each link beginning with "Team" or "*/*" (where * = prof abbr), scan What_links_here for that link, and edit every page there to replace {build name} with PvX:Build:{build name}. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 16:03, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
The problem is the names aren't the same, you need a specific run for each build.Ereanorsignreanor 16:04, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
If you want to go ahead and make that correspondence list right now, the script can simply reference it and replace the build names as it goes. Put them in a file formatted as "Old Build Name\tNew Build Name" and it can do {old build name} --> PvX:Build:{new build name} —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 16:07, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
@_@ You'll have to talk me through this. All I know is R/N Touch Ranger turns into R/N PvE Touch Ranger. Now what?Ereanorsignreanor 16:13, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
Actually, it'll turn into Touch Ranger or something similar. --- Ohaider!-- (s)talkpage 16:22, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
Just make an article here where each line consists of the old build name (from our wantedpages), a separator character ( , or ; should work fine), and the new build name (on PvX). Like this:

R/N Touch Ranger;R/N PvE Touch Ranger

User:Wizardboy777/Build name changes (if you hit edit, it's one build per line). Since there was at least one that linked to a guide, I supplied namespaces for everything. Also, there's one that was moved to userspace, and several that have been deleted (clearly marked). That's all of them in wantedpages that have 10+ links. Feel free to edit it or whatever if you need a different format for the bot or anything like that. ¬ Wizårdbõÿ777(talk) 02:33, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

Wow, that was fast! Let's see then... yeah, that'll work. The deleted ones I'll probably leave out of my local copy, and just apply PanSola's new DeletedLink to them like the ones under 10 links. The userspace one, hmm... I'll probably "delete" those links too. Much thanks for this! —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 02:47, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

a delightful rhyming description for Charr Flameshielder.

There once was a young Charr Flameshielder.
He was both a fire and Prot-wielder.
A brash Mes hero
Dared call him "E-Mo"
And so the young Flameshielder keeled 'er.

Title Skills Idea

Hi, Seen as though you are the cleaning up things, I've had an idea to tidy up the Title Skills (e.g. Eternal Aura).

Here Goes: I have created a new Template in my user space User:Himm Taeguk/MyTemplate that demonstrates the effect. There are two templates that do the work (called Temp1 and Temp2 for now). What I'm thinking is adding a new Parameter to the Skill box for Title Rank Progression. Then if this has a value use my Temp1 as the Progression and my Temp2 will be used as the Progression row.

This should make it look a little more consistant with the other Skills.

This is just an idea, you or any other admins, can change/ignore it if you like.

Let me know what you think. HimmTaeguk (T/C) 08:31, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Good idea. I'd been thinking for a while that we should do something like this, but I've been caught up in other projects. User:PanSola is updating the skillbox right now with a revised categorizing scheme - he might be able to include this in the same update. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 14:30, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
Do all skills depending on title tracks have the same max number of ranks? -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 14:35, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
Everything has 10 except for the Allegiance rank titles, they have 12. That jolly well clunkers things up a bit, donnit? XD That would require a third set of progression templates, obviously. Would it be worth it? —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 14:41, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
Do they follow a consistent linear rounded progression like normal skills? -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 15:16, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Template documentation

Heya, I'd like to advocate for putting template documentation on a sub-page transcluded, that way the main template can be protected while the documentation remain freely editable and can be improved by anyone. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 04:23, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

I noticed you'd done that for the skill box, but apparently I didn't make the connection that I should do the same for the effect box. ^^; I'll go do that right now. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 04:27, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Err... maybe I was mistaken, it's not on the skill box... >.> um... —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 04:28, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

user skill box enforcement

You should really make sure it WORKS first. You have to include the full coding for the image. You also have to specify the Profession icon at the moment, but I'm hope to change that soon.Entrea SumataeEntrea [Talk] 03:01, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Bah! I was hoping no one would really care - most of the ones I've changed so far are from users whose last contribution was over 6 months ago. A lot of them didn't have icons, anyway. But since you complained... :P I'll go fix the ones that did have icons. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 03:07, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
You templated my talk page AFTER I fixed all of them. It was amusing. Felix Omni Signature 03:08, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
XD Ah well, you can remove it then. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 03:10, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Could the bot do this? your screwing up my precious recent changes. (i would not be adverse to your using the bot for manual tasks of this nature if it has to be done manually. however should be discussed with others first)—JediRogue 15:54, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
Unfortunately, the bot wouldn't be able to tell if the template is auto-including an icon of the same name as the skill. I'm going to be in a training class all afternoon anyway, so RC will be fine for now. ;) —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 15:56, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
Oh, duh - I can just log in as Bot ishmael and edit as that account - they'll still get marked as bot edits. I'll be sure to do that tonight. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 16:06, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

There's your problem - moving arms is wasted energy when working on a computer (not to mention it makes you look silly Flailing about like that ;) And you might hurt yourself). Using keyboard shortcuts means you only have to move your fingers. Some days I have to take a break from editing simply because my left pinky gets sore from holding Ctrl so much. Well, Well Then

So I just saw that you farm Obsidian Shards. Well, I'm trying for obsidian armor, and it's going to take me forever to be able to afford it, but if you get a stack of 105 shards, I'll buy em for like 100 less than what the trader would've charged me at the time. I save cash and you make cash, win-win. lol, you game? Hell, I'll buy however many you have, up to 105. Powersurge360Violencia 06:36, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the offer, but I'm saving them up to buy my first set of Obsidian armor (dunno which char yet). Yes, I know I'm about 3 years behind the times on that. :P —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 22:01, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Somewhat funny, ya. By the way, youre name is Dr ishmael, and your sig says Ishmaerl. , so technically its brekaing gw:sign. I think.. ;P 93.96.58.79 16:21, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
I don't think so: "A substituted signature should resemble to some degree the username it represents. Signatures that obscure an account name to the casual reader may be seen as disruptive." I think a single capitalization difference would still "resemble to some degree".
In other news, the vandal is now spamming that YouTube link on all Nightfall missions. How do we deal with this? —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 16:28, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
Oh heck. We warned him to not put it up, so it could be considered vandalism. --- Ohaider!-- (s)talkpage 16:30, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
Banning is fine with me, but he's using a proxy - I've seen three IPs so far. We could keep banning his new IPs, but I didn't know if there was a better way to deal with that. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 16:32, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
If he uses a small range of IPs, a range-ban would work? No idea how it works tho >< --- Ohaider!-- (s)talkpage 16:34, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
Range-ban would be 123.45.*.* or something like that, I think - it would work against someone who simple keeps reconnecting to their ISP to change their IP. Using a proxy, you can change the entire IP, though, so range-ban wouldn't stop them. In any case, he seems to have stopped for now. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 16:38, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
