Status report

Hey - it seems like I've not been on here in a while, I have been RC scanning constently. So I thought I'd explain why I don't have that much (Time??? Mr Freeman?).

Well that's the first reason - I'm playing HL2 a lot. Join me on Steam - too see what i've been up to.
EQ2 has given all legacy accounts 60 days free play, I once played EQ2 - so I might go back to that.
A friend of mine has a project that he'd like to see worked on, he says I can't give you more info - but http://www.halochrome.co.uk/ has some (NOTE: I don't think it will ever get off the ground - but I have been spending time learning wordpress)
I've become a sort of steam addict - with paypal plugged into my bank, it's easy to go overboard.
And i've got exams, so i've been busy.
So there RandomTime 20:40, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
Have fun with your exams, I suppose ;) And with whatever else you're doing. --- Ohaider!-- (s)talkpage 20:44, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Wake up wikia...

I started as an editor to GuildWiki - the free encyclopedia about Guild Wars, you may have heard of it, I stayed there - because it seems to be the best place in the world.

Wikia dosn't think so...

For some reason - Wikia thinks it's providing some kind of service that we can get nowhere else, nowhere else would give you Free wiki hosting (orly? yarite) - I stay here as I think that I am giving a good thing for the community - but wikia thinks that I should provide them money.
I know that wikia isn't making money on this - but it seems that they think "it's ok to put ads down the throat of our users, particularly the core userbase that visits the site daily and provides them with FREE content.
So... Wake up wikia, wake up or smell the ashes. RandomTime 20:05, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Run Escape

Whilst browsing through comments through a video sent to me by someone - this annoyed me: Allow me to take it apart. (Reason I didn't to a GW comment is I didn't see one)

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/35738.html

"runescape is a great game and people would say that WOW is better but in WOW all you really do is train combat and cant cook or anything else." Ok - you havn't played WoW noob. "But in runescape you can cook smith mining combat summoning and lot of other skills."

Needs moar commas - also, you can do most of those things in WoW. WoW also allows you to do stuff that isn't "click on this object" "also you can talk to people everywere in runescape." Guild Wars "So you guys that play WOW try runescape for free or become a member for 5 bucks a month with loads of extra benifits and runescape charges less for membership" Ok kid, don't get carried away, ask your english teacher to explain commas and full stops. "or you could play for free unlike WOW where its $15 a month." May I remind you, Guild Wars "So guys of WOW and other online games try this game runescape" If you are viewing this - you probably have. "its awesome fun" Debaitable (see below) "and you meet new friends" Look up MMO on Wikipedia "and try and get your friends to play Runescape player Hopking123 "

Ok - so with that critisism in my Gob - I decided to see if membership sucked less than the free one, so I paypalled the honery £4 to whoever and tried it out.

First off - the game looks better in full screan mode, i'll grant them that, for a Java game, it has decent graphical perfomance (the full res killed my system though). Gameplay wise, I can't find the game. Booooooring, Walk here, walk here, walk here. Want to do a quest, meh, just look up a quest guide that says "buy this this and this then go here", otherwise you end up walking all over the place. Want to level up a skill? just click on a tree for 4 hours. £4 not worth spent, save your pennies, and buy GW. 'Nuff said RandomTime 21:58, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Cousin of mine used to play RS as a member for a decently long time. He went on and on about how good it was for 2 seconds and then after a few weeks it became "Oh crap..My account got hacked 3 times this month..". Noted my cousin is a younger kid. RS SEEMS like a good game for the first few weeks of membership, then your account gets noticed. People start coveting stuff you have apparently, and since RS doesn't have the best security getting your account hacked isn't hard at all. Then you go to support, only for them to do jack shit about it. Yet, he made another account, continued to play members. It's addictive, thats what he said. Thats how..whoever owns that monstrosity makes their money. The graphics and gameplay suck quite badly, but he said "Its just addictive." I then turned him on to Guild Wars. He hasn't played RS since. He has ALOT more spending money as well. ;). Rsz PLSig 16:23, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
I hate people saying "my account got hacked" - it means "I didn't set a good password" RandomTime 17:36, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Yeah - saves money RandomTime 17:43, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
My usual saying is that mindless leveling is for players with more free time than skill. Runescape caters to that market. It's been about seven years since I played it (which was only for a few days), but it's still my standard example of the worst commercial game of the last 20 years (some of the early game designers at least had the excuse that you can't really do that much in 8 KB or so).
If you want a better password, try K3co[dJ9c/a#kO0| Hackers will never guess that one. Well, unless they read it here, that is. :D Quizzical 18:00, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Just an FYI: Millions like WoW. Approx, what, 100k people like RS? --- Ohaider!-- (s)talkpage 10:13, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
wow has 8 milion paying players runescape has 1 million paying players --Fighterbitsjsig Wammo--talkpage Fighterbitsj 12:20, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

WOW only has 8 million player because it is advertised in magizines, on TV,on the internet. but runescape isnt so that means they wouldnt have as many players. but runescape has over 13million players, 1 million paying. WoW has 8 million paying because they have too. runescape has 1 million paying because you can choose to pay but if they had to pay there would be like 10 million paying. meaning runescape is better. Also people say runescape sucks but thing is that it sucks at a low lvl im lvl 97 and its great. and the person that created runescape is one of the richest people in the world. andew gower creator of runescape.

MMORPGs tend to become less fun as you get higher level. It's not that the content gets worse; it doesn't, and indeed might get better. Rather, things that were once new and exciting become old and mundane. If you don't like a game when you're low level, then spending a year grinding to get higher level will only make you hate the game a lot more. I think the "addictiveness" part might come from, "I spent a year grinding and can't just throw that away!" But that is the sunk cost fallacy. Quizzical 16:18, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
@ unsigned: You're wrong on so many points.. No use arguing, lol. --- Ohaider!-- (s)talkpage 17:14, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply - I don't know how you found me, i'm just too popular! :P - again WoW has 8 million subscribers, runescape has 2 million. Runescape's 13 million players are people who signed up - they don't have to play or subscribe. Yes Andrew Gower and his brother are on the rich list, but IIRC the Sunday Times rich list is only for British people. And WoW sucks too - I tried the trial - it dosn't look like you have though RandomTime 07:01, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

hmm i guess your right but runescape compared to other games is better cuz in other games u cant do any thing after u reach the highest lvl theres no special reward. but in runescape after you u reach the highest lvl you dont stop you work to get all your stats 99 then trying get ranked number one and runescape is small making it easyier to get to know people better unlike in other games where you travle 15 miles to meet someone. but what ever you say. im going to keep playing runescape and so are the other 13 million that do... so suck on that...

There are currently 101824 people playing!. Lol@other 13 million players tbh. --- Ohaider!-- (s)talkpage 04:29, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
Runescape is a gateway MMO. It's a decent free/minimal cost game that introduces players to the wonderful world of xp grinding. Many, many people have played it, but it has a high rate of quitting because, let's face it, there are much better games out there. Runescape will survive, though, because of its unique status as a hugely populated free game. By the way, if you can sign your comments by typing "--~~~~" or pressing button_sig.png, it would be much appreciated.Entrea SumataeEntrea [Talk] 04:32, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
Also, lol at 130 milion accounts created. How many abandoned at level 10? 100 million? 120 million?Entrea SumataeEntrea [Talk] 04:34, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
Just to gauge the amount of grinding involved, I went to one of the powerleveling sites. Apparently to level all of the side stuff to max in Runescape, it's on the order of $15,000. (Yes, fifteen thousand, and that's not a typo.) And that doesn't even include your main combat level. For comparison, a lot of powerleveling companies won't even offer powerleveling in Guild Wars because it would be ridiculous here, but for those that do, it's on the order of $40 to go from level 1 to level 20.
Sure, there are quite a few people who play Runescape. The game does cater to a particular niche pretty well: people with more free time than skill (and hence want winning to be based on whoever has the most free time), and who don't have the means to pay for a game. As the free time versus skill bit goes, Guild Wars is at the other end of the spectrum. If you've spent 10,000 hours on your character but haven't learned how to pull, you're likely to still fail, say, Gate of Pain with just henchmen and heroes. And that's in easy mode. Quizzical 16:08, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Reply

"hmm i guess your right" so do I "but runescape compared to other games is better cuz in other games u cant do any thing after u reach the highest lvl" As a GuildWars player - where the max level is 20 I take offence to that "theres no special reward. but in runescape after you u reach the highest lvl you dont stop you work" (Grind) "to get all your stats 99 then trying get ranked number one" An impossible task unless you have an insane amount of time "and runescape is small making it easyier to get to know people better" Sharded servers - you can talk to others but can't meet them unless they are on the same server "unlike in other games where you travle 15 miles to meet someone." Dude check out Map travel "but what ever you say. im going to keep playing runescape and so are the other 13 million that do... so suck on that." K, whatever - I have no problem with you doing that RandomTime 09:49, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

well i know runescape sucks but after you play it for a day or 2 it get addicting and you cant stop. then you dont really care that the graphics suck ass.

In the schools where I grew up, playing RuneScape was the ultimate mark of failure and geekhood, and I've got the impression that that's the case in a lot of other campuses also. I am not sure where all the millions of players are, but I guess they must be closet players. In any case I am still puzzled how you can repeatedly say "RuneScape sucks, the graphics suck, etc", but still advocate playing it because it's addicting...I am not sure I would want to play a game which I knew sucked, just because I couldn't bring myself to quit. Here's a question: do you think RuneScape is fun? I think that's the most important thing for a game. Entropy Sig (T/C) 19:10, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
